The gut microbiome influences host's immunity, development, and metabolism and participates in the gut-brain axis, thus impacting the health of the host. It is a dynamic community varying between individuals and within individuals at different time points. Hence, determining the factors causing this variability may elucidate their impact on host's health. However, understanding the drivers of variation has proven difficult particularly as multiple interactions occur simultaneously in the gut microbiome. We investigated the factors shaping the gut microbiome by applying the metacommunity concep

BACKGROUND: Family and society, as key sources of support in the patient adaptation process, can play a substantial role. However, the contribution of family and society to patients' coping methods, encompassing both positive and negative effects, has not been sufficiently studied. This qualitative study explores the challenges of living with scleroderma, the related strategies, and the dual impact of family and society on patients' coping strategies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted using a qualitative approach with conventional content analysis in 2023-2024. Data were collect

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and restricted, repetitive behaviors (RRBs). These symptoms may stem from cognitive flexibility deficits, with dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and related neural circuits proposed as underlying mechanisms.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could enhance PFC activity and functional connectivity, thereby improving cognitive flexibility in a valproic acid (VPA)-induced ASD rat model.
METHODS: Pregnant Sprague-Daw

The aim of the article is to describe variables associated with use of home help. A random sample of 1,261 non-institutionalised elderly persons aged 70-95 years in four communes answered a questionnaire on their health and social situation during the winter 1986/87. Twenty-five percent receive home help: 13%, 26% and 49% in the age groups 70-74, 75-79, and 80-95, respectively. Among those living alone more males than females receive home help (41% vs. 35%), as compared with those not living alone (M: 12%, F: 22%). Individuals receiving home help are characterised by reduced functional capacit

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority women (SMW) experience higher rates of substance use relative to heterosexual women in the U.S. but remain an under-studied population. SMW who inject drugs (SMWWID) navigate an unpredictable drug market and may experience complex relationships within their social spheres. We explore cisgender SMWWID's strategies to maintain safety while injecting drugs, and the influence of their social support systems on those strategies.
METHODS: We conducted N = 16 phone-based, semi-structured, in-depth interviews with SMWWID in Baltimore, Maryland between June-October 2021. Th

INTRODUCTION: This study examines how imposed religious identities operate as an ideological instrument in Kazakhstan's post-Soviet transformation, with particular attention to the social production of stigma and the ways in which boundaries of the national community are articulated in public discourse.
METHODS: Building on Erving Goffman's concept of stigma and critical approaches to ideology and governance (Althusser, Gramsci, and Foucault), the article adopts an interdisciplinary case-study design combining descriptive analysis of secondary quantitative data with qualitative analysis of ke

BACKGROUND: The United States has seen a remarkable increase in the use of both methamphetamine and opioids, used concurrently or simultaneously. This trend has been particularly marked in urban centers on the West Coast. The motivation for co-use among people who use drugs in this important region is not yet clear.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with people who regularly used both methamphetamine and opioids recruited from a syringe services program in downtown Seattle. In addition, SSP staff participated in a focus group discussion (FGD) to share experiences and p

PURPOSE: This study aimed to (1) examine the association between comorbid anxiety and depressive symptoms and quality of life (QoL) among adolescents and young adults and assess whether perceived social support modifies this relationship; and (2) explore the association between comorbid symptoms and use of mental health (MH) services, considering QoL as a potential effect modifier.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1816 adolescents and young adults aged 15-24 years from socioeconomically disadvantaged urban areas of Bogotá, Buenos Aires, and Lima. The analysis included descr

BACKGROUND: As Türkiye’s older adult population grows rapidly, poverty among older adults has become a pressing social issue. This study aims to guide policymakers by examining the sociodemographic and economic factors influencing poverty levels among older adults. METHODS: Data from the Income and Living Conditions Survey (ILCS) of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) were utilized in this study. Poverty thresholds were set at 40% and 50% of median household income, categorizing households into three distinct poverty levels. Accordingly, a generalized ordered logistic regression analy

This article examines whether disorderly household conditions and bodily self-presentation predict mortality, above and beyond four sets of variables conceptually linked to both death and disorder. Data come from 2005/2006 and 2010/2011 waves of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project. We used naturalistic observation of respondents' homes and bodies, along with a diverse range of additional covariates, to predict probability of death. Older adults living in disorderly households were at highest risk of death over 5 years, primarily because they confronted high levels of frailty. D

Recent studies have suggested that high levels of social support can encourage better health behaviours and result in improved cardiovascular health. In this study we evaluated the association between social support and ideal cardiovascular health among urban Jamaicans. We conducted a cross-sectional study among urban residents in Jamaica's south-east health region. Socio-demographic data and information on cigarette smoking, physical activity, dietary practices, blood pressure, body size, cholesterol, and glucose, were collected by trained personnel. The outcome variable, ideal cardiovascular

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal local and long-range brain connectivity have been widely reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet the nature of these abnormalities and their functional relevance at distinct cortical rhythms remains unknown. Investigations of intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs) and their coherence across whole brain networks hold promise for determining whether patterns of functional connectivity abnormalities vary across frequencies and networks in ASD. In the present study, we aimed to probe atypical intrinsic brain connectivity networks in ASD from resting-state electroencepha

BACKGROUND: Digital behaviors such as sleep, social interactions, and productivity reflect how individuals structure their daily lives. Among university students, online activity patterns mirror academic schedules, social rhythms, and lifestyle habits, with disruptions linked to sleep, stress, and well-being. Existing approaches-including wearables, apps, and surveys-depend on self-report or active participation, limiting long-term adherence. Passive sensing of network traffic offers a scalable alternative for the unobtrusive capture of smartphone usage patterns that preserves privacy.

With the acceleration of climate change and urbanization, floods have become increasingly frequent. Social media has emerged as a valuable data source for flood monitoring. However, current social media flood research is confined to a single spatial scale, overlooking the heterogeneity and methodological challenges of using such data across different spatial levels. This study proposed a multi-scalar analytical framework to systematically assess the current applications and future directions of social media in flood-related research. We adopted a semi-automated method supported by large langua

BACKGROUND: Severe fatigue and cognitive complaints are frequently reported after SARS-CoV-2 infection and may be accompanied by depressive symptoms and/or limitations in physical functioning. The long-term sequelae of COVID-19 may be influenced by biomedical, psychological, and social factors, the interplay of which is largely understudied over time. We aimed to investigate how the interplay of these factors contribute to the persistence of symptoms after COVID-19.
METHODS: RECoVERED, a prospective cohort study in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, enrolled participants aged⩾16 years after SARS-CoV
