Academic self-efficacy significantly impacts the academic performance of international students in China. This research explores the current status and influencing factors of Chinese learning self-efficacy (CLSE) among this population. Based on Bandura's self-efficacy theory and existing mature scales, this study constructs an analytical framework comprising four dimensions: cognitive ability, affective attitude, learning strategy, and social support. The study then uses SPSS 26.0 to analyze data collected from 427 valid questionnaires. The findings of the questionnaire indicate that the CLSE

Primary caregivers for children living with epilepsy commonly endure severe psychological and social burdens. Nevertheless, family resilience, defined as the ability to adjust and function well when facing hardships, has not been sufficiently explored in this caregiver group. This research intended to assess the overall status of family resilience among primary caregivers of children with epilepsy and explore its major influencing factors. A cross-sectional study was carried out. Participants were 328 primary caregivers recruited from a tertiary hospital in Jiangsu, China, with the survey peri

The present study used a psychology of working theory (PWT) framework to test the direct and indirect relations of perceived social status and transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) marginalization (i.e., victimization, nonaffirmation of gender identity, negative expectations for the future) with work volition, overqualification, and vocational and emotional well-being outcomes (i.e., job satisfaction, meaningful work, satisfaction with life, depression) in a sample of 175 TGNC working adults. This study also tested the moderating effect of one form of structural marginalization (lack of …

Black men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV infection. Black MSM in San Francisco may have higher rates of unrecognized HIV infections. Increased HIV testing among Black MSM may reduce the numbers of unrecognized infections, inform more men of their status and thus reduce the potential for ongoing transmissions. Social network HIV testing programs have focused on asking HIV-positive and/or high-risk negative men to recruit their social or sexual contacts. We used a network approach to deliver HIV testing to Black MSM in San Francisco and collected risk assessme

The extent to which loneliness is a unique risk factor for depressive symptoms was determined in 2 population-based studies of middle-aged to older adults, and the possible causal influences between loneliness and depressive symptoms were examined longitudinally in the 2nd study. In Study 1, a nationally representative sample of persons aged 54 and older completed a telephone interview as part of a study of health and aging. Higher levels of loneliness were associated with more depressive symptoms, net of the effects of age, gender, ethnicity, education, income, marital status, social support,

Identifying factors that drive among-individual variation in mixed parasitic infections is fundamental to understanding the ecology and evolution of host–parasite interactions. However, a lack of non-invasive diagnostic tools to quantify mixed infections has restricted their investigation for host populations in the wild. This study applied DNA metabarcoding on parasite larvae cultured from faecal samples to characterize mixed strongyle infections of 320 feral horses on Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2014 to test for the influence of host (age, sex and reproductive/social status) and en…

BACKGROUND: The global vision is a world free of tuberculosis (TB). Even in resource-rich TB low-incidence settings, we need more focus on the role of social risk factors to end the TB epidemic.
METHODS: Nationwide, retrospective register-based, case-control study from 1990 to 2018, including all TB patients in Denmark ≥18 years old (n = 9581) matched 1:3 on sex and age with population controls. TB risk factors were assessed in logistic regression models and estimated by odds ratio (OR).
RESULTS: All TB patients had considerably lower socio-economic status compared with controls (P < 0.0001)

PURPOSE: Homelessness is associated with poor health outcomes and heightened risk of premature mortality. Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is a key solution for ending homelessness, but there is insufficient evidence of a relationship between PSH and improvements in physical health. Self-rated health-a consistent predictor of mortality-is a meaningful approach to understanding health improvements in PSH.
DESIGN: Longitudinal, observational design with interviews at baseline, 3-months, 6-months, and 12-months (with 91% retention at 12-months).
SETTING: Permanent supportive housing in Los An

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual young adults are at elevated risk for drinking compared to heterosexual young adults, and this discrepancy is particularly striking for sexual minority women (SMW). Perceived social norms are strong predictors of young adult alcohol use, especially among college students. The college environment is often one where increases in alcohol use are seen, but the impact of college status on SMW's drinking has been understudied. The present study explored patterns of alcohol use and consequences among SMW and the extent to which social norms relate to use and consequences. P

BACKGROUND: For persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) it is important to preserve their autonomy, in spite of increasing disability. A major factor mediating autonomy is self-efficacy. According to the social cognitive theory stressors are crucial determinants of self-efficacy, as well as the interaction with partners.
METHODS: In an explorative observational study we assessed in 47 persons with MS (PwMS) the effect of an intense, multidisciplinary, 3-day, social cognitive wellness program with the participation of support partners, after 1, 3 and 6 months.
PRIMARY OUTCOMES: self-efficacy-con

BACKGROUND: Health care disparities are prevalent within pediatric orthopaedics in the United States. Social determinants of health, such as income, race, social deprivation, place of residence, and parental involvement, all play a role in unequal access to care and disparate outcomes. Although there has been some effort to promote health equity both within pediatric orthopaedics and the US health care system altogether, disparities persist. In this review, we aim to identify major sources of inequality and propose solutions to achieve equitable care in the future.
METHODS: We searched the Pu

Social-emotional competence and executive function at preschool are critical for children's school readiness. Unfortunately, young children with the dual risk of low-income status and identified developmental concerns are more likely to have lower social-emotional learning. This study examines (a) bidirectional associations between dyadic parenting behaviors, executive function, and social-emotional competence; and (b) executive function as an explanatory mechanism for the predictive relationship between specific parenting behaviors and children's social-emotional competence. Data came from 26
