Do religious and spiritual identity confer risk for hypertension via psychosocial and lifestyle factors?

The total and indirect effect of hostility on systolic and diastolic blood pressure was compared as a function of religious and spirituality identity in a nationally representative sample of 2971 adults aged 46.44 years. Structural equation modeling uncovered an indirect path from hostility to diastolic blood pressure via unhealthy behaviors and hostility to unhealthy behaviors via social isolation. Compared to a non-religious/non-spiritual reference group, the effect for unhealthy behaviors on diastolic blood pressure was greater for those endorsing some form of religious identity. However, t

Understanding the relationship between social support and physical and mental well-being among jail detainees living with HIV.

Inmates face a disproportionate burden of HIV. This study sought to explore the relationship between social support and physical and mental well-being and the possibility that housing stability moderates this relationship among jail detainees living with HIV. Data for this cross-sectional analysis come from 438 clients who underwent a structured interview. Results indicate a significant positive relationship between social support and both types of well-being (ps < .05); the experience of homelessness was associated with less mental well-being (p < .01). There was no evidence of moderation. Re

Social anxiety disorder: psychobiological and evolutionary underpinnings.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) also know as social phobia is increasingly recognized as a highly prevalent and disabling psychiatric disorder. SAD patients demonstrate cognitive-affective distortions in relation to social situations and abnormal activation patterns in limbic structures during functional imaging. Behavioral inhibition is an endophenotype that may be useful in understanding vulnerability to SAD, and that has specific imaging and genetic correlates. From an evolutionary perspective, it has been speculated that SAD represents a false appeasement alarm. It is notable that SAD respon

Exploring active ageing in a community-based living environment: an ethnographic study in the Western Norway context.

BACKGROUND: Age-friendly environments intend to promote active ageing by facilitating social, mental, and physical participation. This could potentially delay the onset of chronic complex conditions, enabling people to live longer independently at home, and prevent loneliness. This study investigates a community-based living environment in Norway called Helgetun and aims to explore how it can facilitate active ageing. METHOD: We chose an ethnographic approach consisting of observation, informal conversations, and in-depth semi-structured interviews with 15 residents (11 female, 4 male, ages 6

Active social participation extends the healthy life expectancy of older men without spouses in Japan: The Yamanashi healthy active life expectancy cohort study.

This study aimed to evaluate the association between family structure and healthy life expectancy among older Japanese adults, hypothesizing that social participation increases healthy life expectancy more in older men without a spouse than in older women. This study collected data on Healthy Life Expectancy from 541 older adults between 2003 and 2021 from the Healthy Life Expectancy Study, a cohort study of older adults in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. The Japanese long-term care insurance system serves as an indicator of a healthy life expectancy. The family structures of participants were ca

Physical and social trauma: Towards an integrative transdiagnostic perspective on psychological trauma that involves threats to status and belonging.

Current theories of psychological trauma assume that posttraumatic symptoms originate from stress reactions caused by extremely adverse life experiences. Since the diagnosis of PTSD is restricted to events that involve threats to the physical or sexual integrity of a person, such as accidents and physical and sexual violence, these theories are not well suited to explain the psychopathological consequences of severe violations of one's social integrity, such as emotional abuse and bullying. However, it is evident that social threats contribute to a broad range of mental disorders and increase

Decentering as a common link among mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, and social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: The tendency to employ both cognitive reappraisal and mindfulness are associated with reduced trait social anxiety; however, it is unclear whether reappraisal and mindfulness are associated with social anxiety through the same mechanisms. It has been proposed that decentering, or the process of seeing thoughts or feelings as objective events in the mind rather than personally identifying with them, may be a key mechanism underlying both cognitive reappraisal and mindfulness. AIMS: To examine the relationships between reappraisal, mindfulness, decentering, and social anxiety. METH

Vulnerability and resilience in symbiotic interaction: a qualitative study on the lived experiences of rural older women in China.

Against the strategic backdrop of comprehensively advancing rural revitalization and actively addressing population aging, rural elderly women represent a structurally vulnerable group whose living conditions and coping strategies warrant in-depth exploration. Existing studies pre-dominantly view them as passive recipients of assistance and interpret the relationship between fragility and resilience through a linear lens. Based on semi-structured in-depth interviews with 18 rural elderly women in Hakka rural areas of northeastern Guangdong, this study employs constructivist grounded theory to

Stigma, Abuse, and Resistance: Unveiling Community Fear of COVID-19 Through Voices of India's Frontline Community Health Workers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, community health workers (CHWs) worldwide faced violence and abuse. In India, CHWs, known as Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), encountered community resistance and violence in their frontline roles. However, positioned precariously within a neoliberal public health system, their voices remained absent in policymaking, reinforcing structural invisibility. This study, guided by the culture-centered approach (CCA), draws on semi-structured interviews (n = 30) with ASHAs in Odisha, India, to examine their negotiations with community resistance. Findings reve

Poly-victimization of autistic adults: An investigation of individual-level correlates.

Autistic people experience high rates of violence and victimization which is largely due to structural injustices, including stigma and social attitudes. Identifying and addressing systemic and structural factors is vitally important, however effecting change in embedded social structures is likely to take some time, even with concerted efforts. In the meantime, it is important to understand whether there are other individual-level factors that may assist in developing preventative and protective strategies for autistic people. The current study investigated the role of individual-level risk f…

Perceived societal meritocratic climate and self-stigma among adolescents in conflict with the law: the mediating role of collective self-esteem and social disconnection.

INTRODUCTION: This research investigated the relationship between perceived meritocratic climate and self-stigma among adolescents in conflict with the law across two studies. METHODS: Study 1 (N = 322) employed a cross-sectional survey; Study 2 (N = 254) used an experimental manipulation of perceived (non)meritocratic climate. RESULTS: In Study 1, perceived meritocratic climate positively predicted self-stigma, and an exploratory serial mediation via collective self-esteem and social disconnection was observed. In Study 2, the serial mediation was not replicated; instead, the effect was med

Bridging Biology and Society: Molecular Insights into Social Determinants of Vascular Disease.

BACKGROUND: Vascular diseases (VDs)-such as arterial aneurysms, chronic venous disease, and peripheral artery disease-are influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, biological, and social factors. Integrating the assessment of both molecular and social determinants offers a novel framework that connects factors like socioeconomic status, chronic stress, and environmental exposures to the molecular pathways that drive vascular pathophysiology. METHODS: This review was conducted searching libraries such as Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar. The aim was to facilitate the ana

Social skill training and children's cognitive concentration in rural China: the mediating effect of social information processing skills.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive concentration refers to the learning orientation of children, encompassing the skills, attitudes, and behaviors exhibited by children in their pursuit of knowledge. Enhancing children's cognitive concentration through targeted social skills training holds notable importance for improving their classroom performance and academic achievement. METHODS: Drawing upon the social information processing (SIP) theory and the large-scale trial "Let's Be Friends (Shaanxi)" program with a randomized controlled experimental design, we employed structural equation modeling (SEM) t

Lived experiences of neurofibromatosis type 1 patients: Social life, stigma, and intervention strategies.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurogenetic disorder associated with visual-spatial problems, executive dysfunction, and language deficits, making patients experience social isolation, stigma, anxiety, and depression. Here, we explored NF1 patients' lived experiences by conducting semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 21 NF1 patients and 16 care providers. The thematic analysis uncovered dimensions of NF1 patients' social lives at different ecological levels, including their relationships with family, friends, teachers, coworkers, providers, and society. Positive dimensions of NF1 pat

The Role of Social Stress in the Development of Inhibitory Control Deficit: A Systematic Review in Preclinical Models.

Inhibitory control deficit and impulsivity and compulsivity behaviours are present in different psychopathological disorders such as addiction, obsessive-compulsive disorders and schizophrenia, among others. Social relationships in humans and animals are governed by social organization rules, which modulate inhibitory control and coping strategies against stress. Social stress is associated with compulsive alcohol and drug use, pointing towards a determining factor in an increased vulnerability to inhibitory control deficit. The goal of the present review is to assess the implication of social

Bonding With Non-Parental Others During Juvenile Incarceration: Communication Skills, Bonding Capability, and Recidivism.

This study went beyond the parent-child relationship and estimated justice-involved youths' social bonds with mentors, teachers, facility staff, and peers during incarceration. Furthermore, rather than testing the widely found link between social bonds and recidivism, the study examined the factors that enabled youths to develop bonds during incarceration. Based on four waves of data of confined youth, the author used structural equation modeling and bootstrapping to examine how communication skills enabled the cultivation of social bonds and thus indirectly inhibited recidivism. Findings reve
