Maxillary advancement surgery with vertical component: Impact on the nasolabial aesthetics.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the changes in nasolabial soft tissues following Le Fort I osteotomies, focusing on the impact of maxillary vertical repositioning. This retrospective study included 39 patients with a history of Le Fort 1 osteotomy between 2013 and 2021. Patients were grouped based on their maxillary movement into three categories: pure advancement (group A), advancement with impaction (group B), and advancement with downward repositioning (group C). Preoperative and postoperative CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) data were analyzed to measure the changes in nasolabial

Contributions of capsular releases to femoral exposure in total hip arthroplasty via the direct anterior approach.

BACKGROUND: In total hip arthroplasty via the direct anterior approach, appropriate exposure is critical to allow preparation of the femur. The objective of this study was to explore the optimal soft tissue releases needed to allow broaching of the femur through a combination of experimental tests and computer simulations. METHODS: Fourteen full-body cadaveric specimens were included in this study. Total hip arthroplasty was performed via the direct anterior approach with the femur at 20° adduction and 20°extension. Soft tissue releases were performed sequentially, namely, the transverse ilio

Does unilateral surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) lead to perinasal asymmetry?

OBJECTIVE: True unilateral posterior crossbite (TUPC) requires unilateral expansion to prevent nonocclusion at the noncrossbite (NC) side. The recommended osteotomies for TUPC after sutural closure are anterior, lateral, and posterior osteotomies only on the crossbite (C) side and median osteotomy of the midpalatal suture, i.e., unilateral surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME). The goal was to assess airway and perinasal soft tissue outcomes after SARME. METHODS: Data from 16 patients (8 males, 8 females; mean age 18.38 ± 1.45 years) were retrospectively assessed after unilate

Topographic Distribution and Progression of Soft Drusen Volume in Age-Related Macular Degeneration Implicate Neurobiology of Fovea.

PURPOSE: To refine estimates of macular soft drusen abundance in eyes with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and evaluate hypotheses about drusen biogenesis, we investigated topographic distribution and growth rates of drusen by optical coherence tomography (OCT). We compared results to retinal features with similar topographies (cone density and macular pigment) in healthy eyes. METHODS: In a prospective study, distribution and growth rates of soft drusen in eyes with AMD were identified by human observers in OCT volumes and analyzed with computer-assistance. Published histologic data f

Nasal soft-tissue and vault deviation in unicoronal synostosis.

BACKGROUND: Unicoronal synostosis (UCS) results in nasal root deviation toward the fused side of the face, resulting in an apparent nasal dorsal deviation to the non-fused side. The impact of the altered radix position on the osteocartilaginous vault and nasal soft tissue has not been analyzed. The purpose of this study is to morphometrically assess the nasal structure and deviation in UCS. We hypothesize the proximal etiology exerts an impact on the distal nasal form, compared to controls. METHODS: Demographic data were tabulated and computed tomographic information recorded. Three-dimension

Microplane constitutive model and computational framework for blood vessel tissue.

This paper presents a nonlinearly elastic anisotropic microplane formulation in 3D for computational constitutive modeling of arterial soft tissue in the passive regime. The constitutive modeling of arterial (and other biological) soft tissue is crucial for accurate finite element calculations, which in turn are essential for design of implants, surgical procedures, bioartificial tissue, as well as determination of effect of progressive diseases on tissues and implants. The model presented is defined at a lower scale (mesoscale) than the conventional macroscale and it incorporates the effect o

Dynamic extremes of voice in the light of time domain parameters extracted from the amplitude features of glottal flow and its derivative.

In the first part of the study, the subjects (4 females, 4 males) produced sustained breathy, normal and pressed types of phonation. The maximum AC flow (f(ac)) and the negative peak amplitude (d(min)) of the first derivative of the glottal flow were extracted from glottal volume velocity waveforms estimated by inverse filtering. The ratio between f(ac) and d(min) (amplitude quotient, AQ), which gives an estimate of the closing time of the glottal flow, and its normalised version (NAQ) were computed. The NAQ values correlated strongly with the closing quotient of glottal flow. In the second pa

Clinical efficacy and mechanism study of mid-frequency anti-snoring device in treating moderate obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is primarily caused by airway obstruction due to narrowing and blockage in the nasal and nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, soft palate, and tongue base areas. The mid-frequency anti-snoring device is a new technology based on sublingual nerve stimulation. Its principle is to improve the degree of oropharyngeal airway stenosis in OSAHS patients under mid-frequency wave stimulation. Nevertheless, there is a lack of clinical application and imaging evidence. AIM: To investigate the clinical efficacy and mechanisms of a mid-frequency anti

Facial Anthropometric Analysis of Gender-Related Characteristics in Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, facial feminization surgery (FFS) has gained increasing popularity because of increases in transgender individuals and the acceptance of diversity in gender identity. However, there is still a scarcity of anthropometric research to guide evidence-based practices for FFS in Taiwan. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to provide a reference for surgeons to achieve optimal outcomes for patients undergoing FFS. The anthropometric analysis could help surgeons meet patients' specific requirements and improve patients' alignment with their gender identity.

Congenital unilateral proximal radioulnar synostosis: A surgical case report.

RATIONALE: Congenital proximal radioulnar synostosis is a rare genetic malformation of the upper limb. This deformity, which is found mainly in preschool-aged children, has no recognized diagnosis and treatment. Current diagnostic methods cannot effectively assess both bone structure and soft tissue abnormalities, and most surgical treatments introduce complications and do not prevent recurrence. More work is needed; therefore, to address the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 8-year-old male patient was hospitalized in our department. He reported deformity and limi

Sphenoid Temporal Meningioma With Granular Cell Features and Extracranial Infratemporal Extension.

Meningiomas usually arise from arachnoid cap cells and present as intracranial, dural-based lesions. Extracranial extension into the temporalis muscle, infratemporal fossa, orbit, and skull base foramina is uncommon and can mimic primary soft-tissue or peripheral nerve sheath tumors. We report a 54-year-old female who presented with a slowly progressive right-sided facial and temporal swelling over two years, associated with intermittent pain and mild proptosis but no focal neurological deficit. Computed tomography demonstrated a small extra-axial minimally enhancing right anterior temporal le

The role of musculoskeletal radiologists in emergency and trauma settings: current and emerging imaging modalities.

MSK radiologists play a critical role in emergency and trauma settings, where rapid and accurate imaging interpretation is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment. The increasing complexity of trauma cases has driven the adoption of advanced imaging modalities beyond conventional radiographs and computed tomography (CT). Dual-energy CT (DECT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have revolutionized MSK imaging, offering superior tissue characterization and improved detection of occult fractures, bone marrow edema (BME), infections, and soft tissue injuries. Emerging technologies, such as

What injury makes an isolated small coronoid fracture? Morphological analysis using three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Small, isolated coronoid fractures involving less than one-third of the coronoid height are often underestimated on plain radiographs due to minimal displacement and preserved joint congruity. However, these fractures can be associated with significant soft tissue injuries, leading to occult elbow instability. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms and characteristics of isolated small coronoid fractures and to analyze their three-dimensional (3D) morphology using computed tomography (CT)-based modeling. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 27 cases of isolated, noncomminu
