A preliminary examination of state and trait anxiety among Mandarin-speaking adults who stutter.

PURPOSE: The psychological impact of stuttering, such as anxiety in adults who stutter, is understudied in non-Western cultures. This study addresses this gap by performing a preliminary examination of anxiety in a group of Chinese adults who stutter. The aims of the study were to (a) compare state and trait anxiety between adults who stutter and adults who do not stutter, and (b) examine the cross-cultural consistency of the relationship between stuttering and anxiety. METHOD: A total of 40 Mandarin-speaking adults who stutter and 40 age- and sex-matched Mandarin-speaking adults who do not s

Preliminary Reliability and Validity of Asynchronous Speech Screening to Support Clinical Triage for Children With Cleft Palate and Velopharyngeal Dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Children with cleft and craniofacial conditions require ongoing monitoring and evaluation to manage persistent speech and resonance disorders. Regular assessment allows clinicians to detect emerging problems, evaluate intervention efficacy, and adjust treatment plans accordingly. However, socioeconomic and logistical barriers place many children at risk for sporadic or absent follow-up, leading to undiagnosed or underaddressed velopharyngeal dysfunction. This pilot study examined the reliability and use of asynchronous speech and resonance screenings to identify children who need comp

Predicting Developmental Language Disorder in Bilinguals From Multiple Sources of Evidence: A Decision Tree Approach.

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists consider multiple pieces of assessment data when making diagnostic decisions for bilingual children. The current study explored the converging evidence framework by applying a decision tree model, a user-friendly prediction tool, to identify bilingual children with developmental language disorder (DLD) using multiple assessment data. METHOD: One hundred eighty-six Spanish-English bilingual children in kindergarten completed a bilingual language assessment battery, consisting of parents' and teachers' questionnaires, standardized language assessment, narra

A Study of Variability in Brief Assessment of Transactional Success in Aphasia Story Retelling Performance Using Generalizability Theory.

PURPOSE: This study used generalizability theory (G-theory) to assess the reliability of the Brief Assessment of Transactional Success in aphasia (BATS) and whether reliability can be maintained with more efficient study designs. METHOD: G-theory was applied to a data set from BATS test development, where story retells were scored using main concept analysis. Linear mixed-effects models were used to estimate the proportion of variability in scores attributable to storyteller (a person with aphasia [PWA] or familiar/unfamiliar conversation partner [CP]), rater (human or automated), and stimuli

Beyond the Acute Phase: Prevalence and Clinical Characteristics of Unreported Swallowing Impairments in Ambulatory Outpatient Stroke Survivors.

PURPOSE: Unreported dysphagia, imaging-identified swallowing impairment without symptom reporting, remains poorly characterized beyond the acute phase of stroke. This study aimed to (a) quantify the point prevalence of unreported dysphagia in ambulatory stroke survivors, (b) examine demographic and clinical factors associated with the presentation of this phenomenon, and (c) evaluate concordance between patient-reported symptoms and imaging-derived impairments. METHOD: This retrospective secondary analysis included 45 ambulatory adults ≥ 3 months post-ischemic stroke who underwent videofluoro

Two Measures, Same Outcome: Comparable Associations Between Exposure Measurements and Language Performance in Bilinguals With and Without Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Language exposure is associated with language performance in bilinguals. Two common ways of measuring language exposure are total hours of exposure and percentage of exposure. This study compared differences in these two methods and examined their associations with bilingual language performance. Differences between typically developing (TD) children and those with developmental language disorder (DLD) were also analyzed across exposure measures and language performance. METHOD: Participants were 1,397 Spanish-English bilingual preschool children (73 identified with DLD). Caregivers

Understanding the Concept of Fluency in Stuttering: A Grounded-Theory Study.

PURPOSE: Fluency is a widely used concept in stuttering research and clinical practice and has traditionally been approached through observable speech characteristics. Although theoretical and clinical perspectives have acknowledged internal aspects of fluency, the perspectives of people who stutter themselves remain largely unexplored. The purpose of this study was to examine how adults who stutter define fluency and experience it in their daily lives. METHOD: Ten adults who stutter participated in individual interviews guided by an evolved grounded theory approach. Interviews began with the

The perceptions of speech-language pathologists on managing stuttering across the lifespan: Outcomes of a mixed-methods national workforce survey.

PURPOSE: This study explored the self-perceived competence of speech-language pathologists working in Australia to manage stuttering across the lifespan, factors influencing provision of evidence-based practice, and support needs to develop confidence in this area. METHOD: A national online survey was completed by 147 practising speech-language pathologists. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data were analysed using content analysis. RESULT: Perceived competence was highest and above the competence threshold for assessment of stuttering across the l

A scoping review of socioeconomic risk factors among incarcerated youth offenders with language disorders.

PURPOSE: Youth offenders disproportionately come from low socioeconomic status backgrounds and are more likely to present with a language disorder than their non-offending peers. Literature on the presence of socioeconomic status-related risk factors among youth offenders with language disorders is limited, despite its important role in both language development and youth offending behaviour. METHOD: A scoping review protocol was developed using the PRISMA-ScR protocol and executed across five electronic databases. Data sources were deduplicated, screened, charted, and appraised. Partner-Specific Audience Design in Parkinson's Disease: Insights From In-Person and Virtual Modalities.

PURPOSE: Successful conversation depends on audience design-tailoring utterances to a partner's knowledge. Parkinson's disease (PD) is linked to speech motor and pragmatic impairments, yet it remains unclear whether speakers with PD retain partner-specific audience design. We tested two competing predictions. If previously reported pragmatic deficits generalize, speakers with PD should show attenuated partner sensitivity. If adaptive mechanisms remain intact, audience design should be preserved, particularly in goal-directed interactions. METHOD: Two referential communication experiments incl
