Early echocardiographic and pulmonary function findings in idiopathic scoliosis.

Thirty-six children and adolescents with early stages of idiopathic scoliosis underwent evaluation by echocardiography and pulmonary function testing. Mildly increased pulmonary vascular resistance was inferred from an elevated ratio of right preejection period to right ventricular ejection time, an increased right ventricular dimension, and a decreased left ventricular dimension. Since neither decreased arterial oxygen saturation nor increased end-tidal expired carbon dioxide partial pressure was seen, desaturation and hypoventilation should not account for these abnormalities. Pulmonary func

Avermectin induces developmental toxicity and immunotoxicity in zebrafish larvae.

Avermectin has been widely used in agriculture and animal husbandry for decades, and its associated environmental problems have raised increasing concerns regarding its safety. This study investigated the developmental and immunotoxicity of avermectin in zebrafish larvae and its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that exposure to 0.15-0.60 μg/mL avermectin for 72 h induced developmental malformations in zebrafish larvae, including decreased heart rate, spinal curvature, and edema. It also significantly reduced the numbers of immune cells such as neutrophils, T cells, and macrophages. At

Sirt2 ablation exacerbates Sod1 knockout-induced progeroid phenotype in mice.

The free radical theory of aging suggests that oxidative stress from free radicals contributes to aging. While free radicals cause DNA damage and cellular dysfunction, they also regulate essential signaling pathways. This duality complicates direct testing of the theory in mice, as demonstrated by the minor lifespan impact of Sod1 knockout. We hypothesize that base excision repair mechanisms, that involve SIRT2, a longevity-associated SIRTUIN family member, may mitigate excessive free radical effects. Our study found that Sirt2-/-Sod1-/- double-knockout mice exhibited significantly reduced lif

C-mannosyltransferase DPY19L1L-mediated Reissner Fiber formation is critical for zebrafish (Danio rerio) body axis straightening.

The successful secretion and assembly of subcommissural organ (SCO)-spondin are crucial for Reissner Fiber (RF) formation and body axis straightening in zebrafish. However, the mechanisms underlying RF formation remain largely unknown. Here, we report that the C-mannosyltransferase dpy19l1l (dumpy-19 like 1 like) is expressed in the spinal cord during zebrafish embryonic development. Mutation in dpy19l1l resulted in idiopathic scoliosis (IS)-like body axis curvature in the absence of muscle or cilia defects. URP2 expression was down-regulated in dpy19l1l-/- mutants. Notably, RF formation was i

Causal relationship between physical activity and scoliosis: A Mendelian randomization study.

Scoliosis, marked by abnormal spinal curvature, is common in adolescents and can lead to chronic pain and reduced quality of life. The relationship between physical activity and scoliosis is debated. In this study, we aim to investigate the causal relationship between physical activity levels and idiopathic scoliosis risk using the Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. Two-sample MR analyses evaluated low-intensity (low-intensity physical activity [LIPA]), moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA), and total physical activity (TLA) as exposures, selecting genetic instruments based on their associations. [Updates on rickets and osteomalacia: guidelines for diagnosis of rickets and osteomalacia].

Rickets and osteomalacia are disorders of calcification characterized by defects of bone and cartilage mineralization during growth, and bone mineralization in adults, respectively. The specific x-ray findings including a cupping, flaring, and fraying of metaphysis and the elevation of the level of serum alkaline phosphatase are essential for the diagnosis of rickets. In addition, hypophosphatemia, hypocalcemia, and some symptoms including born deformity, spinal curvature, craniotabes, enlargement of the anterior fontanel, rachitic rosary, and joint swelling are also important. Clinicians need

Ultrasonographic diagnosis of diastematomyelia during the 14th week of gestation.

OBJECTIVE: We present a case of type I diastematomyelia diagnosed with ultrasonography at the 14th week of gestation. CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old primigravida at 14 weeks' gestation was presented to our outpatient department with a complaint of dysuria. Routine antenatal ultrasound revealed disruption of the fetal upper thoracic vertebral column curvature, together with hemivertebrae. Further high-resolution two-dimensional ultrasound examination revealed dilatation of the thoracolumbar vertebrae and extra echogenic foci in the spinal canal. Thoracolumbar meningocele was also observed. These o

Calcium phosphate deposition disease in great danes.

A new clinicopathologic syndrome, possibly familial, in Great Dane dogs, resembles the familial childhood variant of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposit disease in man, except that the mineral deposits were composed of amorphous calcium phosphate or hydroxyapatite rather than pyrophosphate. The syndrome was characterized clinically by paraplegia and incoordination in very young puppies which was caused by concentric constriction of the posterior cervical spinal cord. Canal stenosis resulted from dorsal displacement of the seventh cervical vertebra and deformation of the vertebral articular

Morphometry of the thoracolumbar vertebrae in sickle cell disease.

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) who have deformities and vertebral fractures due to osteoporosis may require surgery. Spinal surgeons must become familiar with the vertebral morphometry of patients with SCD and to that aim we have examined the morphometry of the thoracolumbar spine in these patients. A cohort of 100 patients with SCD was examined using plain thoraco lumbar anteroposterior/lateral radiographs and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Vertebral morphometry (vertebral body diameters, pedicle, spinal canal and deformity) was assessed for different age groups. Results we

Forced lordosis on the thoracolumbar junction can correct coronal plane deformity in adolescents with double major curve pattern idiopathic scoliosis.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective radiographic study was conducted. OBJECTIVE: To support our hypothesis that correction of the scoliosis may benefit from a lordotic fulcrum force in the sagittal plane on the thoracolumbar spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is an important spinal deformity. Correction can be achieved with limited options by current bracing techniques. Lateral bending radiographs are used to assess flexibility and predict treatment outcome. The corrective potential of a lordotic fulcrum force in the sagittal plane has not been addressed. Comparison of the performance of a Three-Dimensional Body Scanner and radiography in evaluating adult scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Adult scoliosis, which is characterized by a persistent lateral deviation of the spine of at least 10° in the frontal plane along with vertebral rotation in adulthood, can result from various causes, including degenerative changes, untreated childhood scoliosis, spinal trauma, and prior surgeries. Traditionally, spinal curvature is assessed by measuring the Cobb angle via radiographic imaging; however, concerns over radiation exposure have prompted exploration of alternative diagnostic tools. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly developed three-dimensional (3D) b

Surgical management of severe neglected adult idiopathic scoliosis: A review article on challenges and contemporary treatment strategies.

Neglected adult idiopathic scoliosis (NAdIS) is a spinal deformity characterized by severe rigidity and multiplanar curvature, significantly impairing pain levels, physical function, and health-related quality of life. Its complexity is heightened by longstanding vertebral malalignment, cardiopulmonary compromise, and age-related comorbidities, making surgical management particularly challenging. Despite progress in spinal deformity correction, consensus remains lacking on the optimal treatment strategy for these patients. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary surgical options for NAd

The pitfalls in surgical management of lumbar canal stenosis associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

There have been few clinical studies in the area of cervical spine that focused on surgery for treating degenerative lumbar disease in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). High rates of wound complications and instrumentation failure have been reported more for RA than for non-RA patients, although clinical outcomes are similar between the two groups. Lumbar canal stenosis in RA is caused not only by degeneration but also by RA-related spondylitis, which includes facet arthritis and inflammation around the vertebral endplate. The pitfalls in surgical management of lumbar canal stenosis in

Surgical simulation of circumferential osteotomy and correction of cervico-thoracic kyphoscoliosis for an irreducible old C6-C7 fracture dislocation.

BACKGROUND: Many different surgical procedures have been employed in the treatment of fracture dislocation at the middle to lower cervical spine. However, consistent protocols and procedures have not been fully established for the surgical correction of an irreducible old cervical fracture dislocation associated with spinal deformity. METHODS: We report a case of irreducible cervical fracture dislocation and kyphoscoliosis, in which surgical simulation using a three-dimensional full-scale model was useful for circumferential corrective osteotomy at the C6-C7 level.
