The practice of prophylactic ankle taping or wrapping to reduce the incidence of inversion ankle sprains in athletes has come under attack. The purpose of this study was to measure objectively one ankle taping technique's ability to withstand the stresses placed upon it by a standardized exercise routine. Electrogoniometers were used to measure the three-dimensional ankle motion of 20 subjects walking on a level surface and a 10 degrees sideslope. The evaluations were carried out under these three conditions: (1) both ankles untaped, (2) both ankles taped before exercises, and (3) both ankles

Adhesive capsulitis or "frozen ankle" is a syndrome resulting from repeated ankle sprains, or perhaps following immobilization after trauma. Ankle arthrography is a useful and safe diagnostic procedure in this syndrome. Typical arthrographic features are described together with case histories of two patients with frozen ankle. We suggest that early mobilization of the patient following trauma is particularly important in preventing the development of a forzen ankle syndrome.

A technically simple tenodesis of the peroneus brevis tendon has been applied in the treatment of 42 patients with lateral instability of the ankle; 33 patients have been examined 2-10 years after the operation and 91 per cent showed excellent or good results. It is concluded that this procedure gives good stability in the varus as well as the antero-posterior direction and is therefore comparable to the technically more difficult Watson-Jones procedure.

Copers are individuals with a history of ankle sprain who return to daily and sports activities without recurrent instability. However, it is unclear whether copers can use movement strategies comparable to those of healthy individuals without a history of ankle sprain. Understanding these movement strategies may be important for designing effective training programs and avoiding unintended biomechanical adaptations. Therefore, we aimed to compare the kinematics and muscular activities of the lower limbs during half squats and gait between copers and healthy controls. Ten copers (3 females) an

Background: It is already known that the prevalence of ankle sprain is high in dancers, leading to chronic ankle instability (CAI) and, consequently, affecting jump landing. Therefore, methods that allow the early identification of jump landing alterations related to CAI are necessary. Research Question: This study aimed to investigate if regional plantar force estimated from plantar pressure distribution is different between dancers with and without ankle instability during jump landing. Methods: Female dancers with (n = 12) and without (n = 14) CAI performed single-leg jumps on a force plate

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the association between Ankle-GO score during the return to sport process and the probability of becoming a coper 1 year after lateral ankle sprain (LAS). Copers were defined as patients returning to their preinjury sport without loss of function and reporting no episodes of reinjury or giving-way.
METHODS: Two months after a LAS, patients performed the Ankle-GO assessment which includes a cluster of four functional tests and two self-reported questionnaires for a maximum score of 25 points. One year after injury, participants were classified as copers or non-copers. Eig

CONTEXT: Ankle instability can describe various impairments, including perceived instability (PI), mechanical instability (MI), and recurrent sprains (RSs), alone or combined.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of 8 ankle impairment subgroups and their effect on neuromuscular performance in prerecruitment combat soldiers.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Military infantry basic training base.
PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A total of 364 infantry male combat soldiers entering basic training (aged 18-21 years).
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Participants were assessed for PI (via the C

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies of lateral ankle sprains in NCAA sports are important in appraising the burden of this injury and informing prevention efforts.
PURPOSE: To describe the epidemiology of lateral ankle sprains in NCAA sports during the 2014-15 through 2018-19 seasons.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study.
METHODS: Injury and exposure information collected within the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program (ISP) were examined. Counts, rates, and proportions of lateral ankle sprains were used to describe injury incidence by sport, event type (practices, competitions), season

INTRODUCTION: Balance deficiencies are common among aging adults. Musculoskeletal injuries such as lateral ankle sprains (LAS) also contribute to compromised balance; potentially amplifying the postural insufficiencies in these age groups with a history of LAS. Yoga has emerged as an effective balance training intervention for aging adults; but limited application exists in these age cohorts with LAS history. This study may provide important guidance for the implementation of this intervention in these populations.
METHODS: In this cohort design study, middle-age and older adults with a histo

RATIONALE: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a painful condition classified as type I or II depending on the absence or presence of nerve injury, respectively. Injury to the lateral dorsal cutaneous nerve (LDCN), a branch of the sural nerve, is a rare occurrence observed after a sprain or procedures conducted on the lateral side of the ankle.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 38-year-old female, who had undergone prolotherapy for a sprain in the lateral side of the left ankle 3 months ago, presented with persistent causalgia and dysesthesia around the injection site.
DIAGNOSIS: An electrodiagnostic

CONTEXT: Conventional ankle prophylactics restrict harmful ankle inversion motions that lead to injury. But these existing prophylactics also limit other ankle motions, potentially leading to detriments in functional joint capacity. The ankle roll guard (ARG) may alleviate the prevailing issues of existing ankle prophylactics and prevent harmful ankle inversion, while allowing other joint motions.
OBJECTIVE: This technical report sought to compare the ARG's ability to prevent ankle inversion, but not restrict other ankle motions with existing prophylactics.
DESIGN: Repeated-measures study.

Ankle sprains are the most common injury in regular badminton players and usually occur at the end of a match or training. The purpose of the present study was to examine the influence of fatigue produced by badminton practice on the lower limb biomechanics of badminton players. It was hypothesized that fatigue induces ankle kinematic and lower leg muscle activity changes which may increase the risk of ankle sprain. Ankle kinematics, ankle kinetics and muscles activities of 17 regular badminton players were recorded during lateral jumps before and after an intense badminton practice session. P

Lisfranc injuries can be devastating to the athlete and nonathlete. In the athletic population, minor loss of midfoot stability compromises the high level of function demanded of the lower extremity. The most critical aspect of treatment is identifying the injury and severity of the ligamentous/articular damage. Not all athletes are able to return to their previous level of function. With appropriate treatment, a Lisfranc injury does not mandate the cessation of an athletic career. We focus on the diagnosis and an algorithmic approach to treatment in the athlete discussion the controversy of o

In this study, we aimed to clarify the characteristics of neuromuscular function, kinetics, and kinematics of the lower extremity during sprinting in track and field athletes with a history of strain injury. Ten male college sprinters with a history of unilateral hamstring injury performed maximum effort sprint on an athletic track. The electromyographic (EMG) activity of the long head of the biceps femoris (BFlh) and gluteus maximus (Gmax) muscles and three-dimensional kinematic data were recorded. Bilateral comparisons were performed for the EMG activities, pelvic anterior tilt angle, hip an

The aim of this study was to assess sciatic nerve conductivity in athletes with a history of hamstring strain injuries. Twenty-seven athletes with a history of hamstring strain injuries were included in the injured group. The control group consisted of 16 uninjured participants. We measured the proximal and distal latencies and calculated the sciatic nerve conduction velocity to evaluate neuronal conductivity. The results were expressed as median values and interquartile ranges. Both proximal latency and distal latency of the injured limb in the injured group were significantly longer than tho
