Characterizing aggression and its association to anger and hostility among male veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The basis for the associations among anger, hostility, aggressive behavior, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains unclear. We suggest classifying aggressive behavior may elucidate the associations among these factors. On the basis of diagnostic and neurobiological similarities between impulsive aggression (IA) and PTSD, we proposed that IA was the predominant form of aggression in PTSD and that anger and hostility would not significantly predict PTSD when IA was also included as a predictor. METHODS: We used cross-sectional self-report data obtained from two samples of

Mild traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorder in returning veterans: perspectives from cognitive neuroscience.

A significant proportion of military personnel deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) has been exposed to war-zone events potentially associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There has been significant controversy regarding healthcare policy for those service members and military veterans who returned from OEF/OIF deployments with both mild TBI and PTSD. There is currently little empirical evidence available to address these controversies. This review uses a cognitive neuroscience framework to addr

Veterans with history of mild traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorder: challenges from provider perspective.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has separate clinical structures and care processes for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, because veterans are returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with TBI (most frequently mild TBI [mTBI]) and PTSD, the VA needs to evaluate current service delivery systems. We conducted key informant interviews with 40 providers from across the United States who represented separate clinical teams providing specialized TBI or PTSD services. We identified challenges providers perceive in scheduling and engaging pa

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after stigma related events in HIV infected individuals in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: One of the most distressing concerns of many people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa is the stigma. Intense stigma may be traumatic. This study aimed to investigate the probability and correlates of Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following intense stigmatizing events and situations in HIV infected individuals in Nigeria. METHODS: Adult sero-positive attendees of an HIV care centre (N = 190) completed questionnaires regarding sociodemographic and clinical details; the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and the Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale. The clients were th

Factors associated with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression amongst internally displaced persons in northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The 20 year war in northern Uganda between the Lord's Resistance Army and the Ugandan government has resulted in the displacement of up to 2 million people within Uganda. The purpose of the study was to measure rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression amongst these internally displaced persons (IDPs), and investigate associated demographic and trauma exposure risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional multi-staged, random cluster survey with 1210 adult IDPs was conducted in November 2006 in Gulu and Amuru districts of northern Uganda. Levels of exposure to traum

Specific symptoms predict suicidal ideation in Vietnam combat veterans with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder.

Previous research documented the elevated risk of suicide and suicidal ideation among Vietnam veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of the current study was to examine which Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, PTSD symptom clusters are most associated with suicidal ideation in this population. Fifty Vietnam combat veterans enrolled in treatment for PTSD responded to the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation and were interviewed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale. In linear regression analysis, it was found that the reexperiencing symp

Lifetime sexual and physical victimization among male veterans with combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

Because of the high prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veteran men and the limited research on victimization in this group, we recruited 133 male veterans with combat-related PTSD from a psychiatric inpatient unit and assessed them for lifetime physical and sexual trauma. Results indicated that 96% of the sample had experienced some form of victimization over their lifetimes; 60% reported childhood physical abuse, 41% childhood sexual abuse, 93% adulthood physical assault, and 20% adulthood sexual assault. In the preceding year alone, 46% experienced either physical or s

Post-traumatic stress disorder and health-related quality of life in female victims of intimate partner violence.

The association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and health-related quality of life (QOL) in female victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) was examined. The Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to evaluate health-related QOL. IPV victims with PTSD (IPV/PTSD+; n = 18), IPV victims without PTSD (IPV/PTSD-; n = 22), and a non-abused control group (NA; n = 30) were compared. Multiple Analyses of Covariance (covarying for socioeconomic status and age) indicated that the three groups scored significantly differently on health-related QOL, and the IPV/PTSD- group was significant

Risk of post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental disorders among professional military personnel in the Republic of Korea: a nationwide cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Military personnel face unique occupational stressors that increase the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental disorders, but population-based evidence from Asian military populations remains limited. We compared the risk of PTSD and other mental disorders between professional military personnel and reference populations in the Republic of Korea. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using nationwide health insurance claims data from 2002 to 2021. We identified 544 709 professional military personnel, 4 054 102 individuals in the working popu

Six weeks open-label oral ketamine for patients with treatment-resistant depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: We previously completed a double-blind randomised crossover study assessing intramuscular ketamine for treatment-resistant depression (TR-D), post-traumatic stress disorder (TR-PTSD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (TR-OCD). Here, we report an extension study to explore the ongoing benefits and tolerability of maintenance oral ketamine. METHOD: All participants from the original study were eligible to receive a 6-week open-label course of oral ketamine once-thrice weekly. Racemic ketamine for injection was diluted in orange juice and sipped over 30-60 min. Dose amount and freque

Treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder in adults with a history of adverse childhood experiences: A systematic review of psychological interventions.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have long-term effects on adult health, including unresolved trauma and substance use disorder (SUD). There are hypotheses of a mediating role of emotion regulation. This systematic literature review and narrative synthesis assessed the effectiveness of psychological interventions on emotion regulation, PTSD and SUD symptoms. METHODS: Searches were conducted using the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews methodology. Eligible studies were randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental psychological interventions published betwee

International consensus on a standard set of outcome measures for child and youth anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

A major barrier to improving care effectiveness for mental health is a lack of consensus on outcomes measurement. The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) has already developed a consensus-based standard set of outcomes for anxiety and depression in adults (including the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Generalised Anxiety Disorder 7-item Scale, and the WHO Disability Schedule). This Position Paper reports on recommendations specifically for anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder in children and young people aged be

[DBT-PTSD-EA: treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder after interpersonal traumatization in childhood in adolescents with borderline personality disorders : A pilot study].

BACKGROUND: Recent meta-analyses have shown that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adolescents and young adults can be effectively treated; however, there is a lack of studies that investigated the efficacy of psychotherapy in the clinically important group of adolescents with PTSD related to childhood sexual and/or physical abuse and co-occurring symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was a first evaluation of the efficacy of a specifically developed trauma-focused treatment (DBT-PTSD-EA) for adolescent patients with PTSD and BPD symptoms af

Familial risk for psychiatric disorders in military veterans who have post-traumatic stress disorder with psychosis: a retrospective electronic record review.

AIMS/OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a leading cause of morbidity among military veterans, with up to one-in-five individuals with PTSD also having psychotic symptoms. The current study was designed to determine the association between a known family history of psychiatric illness and risk of developing psychosis in patients with PTSD. METHODS: Retrospective medical record review was performed on a cohort study of 414 consecutive individuals admitted to the Veteran Administration in 2014 with a diagnosis of military-related PTSD, but without a prior diagnosis o

Post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, and depression in survivors of the Kosovo War: experiential avoidance as a contributor to distress and quality of life.

Few studies have been conducted on psychological disorders other than post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in war survivors. The aim of this study was to examine PTSD, social anxiety disorder (SAD), and major depressive disorder (MDD) and their associations with distress and quality of life in 174 Albanian civilian survivors of the Kosovo War. This included testing of conceptual models suggesting that experiential avoidance might influence associations between anxiety and mood disorders with psychological functioning. Each of the three psychiatric disorders was associated with greater experie

High Frequency Left-Sided Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder With Comorbid Major Depressive Disorder.

ObjectiveRepetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an established treatment for comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). However, there are no universal protocols regarding the type of rTMS recommended, including among military and first responders. This study aimed to describe high frequency rTMS applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) administered to inpatients with comorbid PTSD and MDD at Ward 17, Austin Health in Melbourne, Australia.MethodRetrospective review of patient files was undertaken for adult inpatients ad

Shared and distinct neural signatures in major depressive disorder and comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder: Insights from structural and functional imaging.

AIMS: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are highly prevalent psychiatric disorders that frequently co-occur, yet the neural mechanisms underlying their shared and distinct pathophysiology remain unclear. This study aimed to delineate the shared and disorder-specific structural and functional neural alterations in individuals with MDD and comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (MDD-PTSD), which may potentially improve diagnostic precision and inform targeted interventions. METHODS: Neuroimaging data were collected from 63 participants, including 18 MDD,

The effects of trauma-focused treatment on painful temporomandibular disorders, awake bruxism and sleep bruxism in patients with severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Chronic painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD), awake bruxism and sleep bruxism are often comorbid with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but the implications for treatment are unknown. OBJECTIVE(S): To explore the effects of PTSD treatment on these conditions. We hypothesized that chronic painful TMD, pain intensity, pain interference, awake bruxism and sleep bruxism would decrease after evidence-based trauma-focused treatment and that this decrease would be maintained at the 6-month follow-up. METHODS: Individuals referred for PTSD treatment were assessed for chronic pa

Cerebral Brain Abscess Mimicking Psychiatric Presentation in an HIV-Positive Patient With Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Bipolar Disorder: A Case Report.

Cerebral brain abscesses, though relatively rare, present significant clinical challenges with high morbidity and mortality rates, especially in immunocompromised patients. These abscesses can mimic psychiatric disorders due to their space-occupying effects, complicating diagnosis and treatment. This case report details a 47-year-old HIV-positive African American woman with a history of bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety who presented to the psychiatric emergency department with altered mental status, catatonia, and disorganized behavior. Initial assessment wa
