Malonic and oleic acids were found in the typical mixtures. Samples containing alpha-naphthylamine gave oleic and malic acids which disintegrated with time of exposure. Tricarballylic acid was confirmed in presence of beta-naphthyl amine, but disappeared with time. Arachidic, tartaric, and adipic acids were found, but they disappeared in eight days' exposed samples. At later stages of exposure, malonic acid was observed along with sporadic appearances of citric , succinic, and oleic acids. Rate of disintegration of these compounds was directly proportional to time of exposure to sunlight.

The status of mitochondrial functioning in Reye's syndrome was assessed by comparing organic acid profiles from nine pathological urines with those from normal urines. It was found that Reye's syndrome urines have a normal content of succinic, oxaloacetic, aconitic, and citric acids suggesting that the enzymes of the acid cycle are functional. Elevated pyruvate and depressed alpha-ketoglutarate levels were observed. Abnormal urinary constituents detected were salicylic and adipic acids. Presence of the latter indicates that the enzymes of fatty acid beta-oxidation are functional.

The effects of aspirin (acetylsalicylate, ASA) and related compounds in the presence of Ca2+ on the oxidative metabolism of isolated rat liver mitochondria were studied. Mitochondrial DNA depletion, encephalomyopathic form, with methylmalonic aciduria is associated with mutations in SUCLA2, the gene encoding a beta subunit of succinate-CoA ligase, where 17 patients have been reported. Mutations in SUCLG1, encoding the alpha subunit of the enzyme, have been reported in only one family, where a homozygous 2 bp deletion was associated with fatal infantile lactic acidosis. We here report a patient with a novel homozygous missense mutation in SUCLG1, whose phenotype is similar to that of patients with SUCLA2 mutations.
