Refractive Error Changes at Near After Smartphone Use.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify short-timescale refractive recovery after a standardized smartphone near task and timed distance-viewing breaks aligned with the 20-20-20 paradigm, and to determine how much of the accommodative/near work-induced transient myopia (NITM) recovery occurs within the earliest seconds of a break. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, 58 students symptomatic for digital eye strain (Computer Vision Syndrome Questionnaire score ≥ 6) completed a 20-minute continuous reading task on smartphone. Objective refractive error was recorded with an open-field autorefractor at baseline, imm

Computational Mechanisms of Gratitude Practice.

Positive psychology interventions, such as gratitude practice, aim to improve well-being through simple techniques. One widely used practice involves reflecting daily on three things one is grateful for. Although this practice is promising, empirical evidence for its efficacy is mixed, and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we develop a computational model of gratitude practice to gain insight into the potential mechanisms of the practice. Employing the active inference framework, we present three simulation studies. First, we formalize gratitude practice as the delibera

Effects of TMS on the Decoding and Electrophysiology of Priority in Working Memory.

The flexible control of working memory (WM) requires prioritizing immediately task-relevant information while maintaining information with potential future relevance in a deprioritized state. Using double-serial retrocuing (DSR) with simultaneous EEG recording, we investigated how single pulses of transcranial magnetic stimulation (spTMS) to right intraparietal sulcus impacts neural representations of unprioritized memory items (UMI), relative to irrelevant memory items (IMI) that are no longer needed for the trial. Twelve human participants (8 female) performed DSR plus a single-retrocue task

An Expertise Transfer Framework For Autonomous Surgical Assistance.

Autonomous surgery holds the potential to transform operative practice by enhancing procedural safety and consistency. While substantial progress has been made on episodic sub-tasks, achieving autonomy for long-horizon tasks that span the entire procedure remains challenging. Current logic-based heuristics and end-to-end learning approaches, though effective for short-term actions, struggle to adapt to the evolving dynamics of complete surgical workflows. To address this gap, an expertise transfer framework is introduced to achieve procedure-spanning autonomous view assistance by emulating exp

Scents of right and wrong: how odor-induced affect shapes moral judgment in adults and preschoolers.

Recent research suggests that incidental affect, including odor-elicited emotion, can shape moral judgment in adults. However, little is known about how this influence develops across early childhood. The present research examined whether pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant odors modulate moral evaluations of care and purity violations in adults and preschool-aged children. In Study 1, 36 undergraduates completed a within-subjects task under three odor conditions. In Study 2, 93 children aged 3 to 6 years completed a developmentally adapted version of the same task. Among adults, odor effects we

Hierarchical Consistency Learning for Test-Time Adaptation in Camouflage Perception.

Camouflaged object detection (COD) aims to localize targets that exhibit minimal perceptual differences from backgrounds through physical attributes. Existing methods, constrained by the static train-then-freeze paradigm, suffer from domain rigidity and annotation dependency, limiting their adaptability to scene variations and unseen camouflage patterns. To overcome these, we propose the hierarchical consistency learning (HCL) framework, which integrates test-time adaptation for dynamic representation recalibration. Specifically, we design the hierarchical representation reconstruction (HRR) t

Chronic inorganic arsenic exposure impairs locomotor performance and socio-affective behavior in zebrafish.

Inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a prevalent and highly toxic environmental contaminant, yet its neurotoxic effects on aquatic organisms are not well characterized. This study examines whether chronic exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of iAs affects locomotor performance and socio-affective behavior in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). Zebrafish were exposed to 10, 50, or 300 µg/L of iAs for 21 consecutive days, with behavioral assessments conducted on Days 0, 7, 14, and 21 using standardized locomotor and social preference tasks. Chronic exposure to iAs resulted in time- and dose-dep

Versatile Exoskeleton Control Supports Elderly Joint Energetics During Hip-Intensive Tasks.

Age-related mobility decline is frequently accompanied by a redistribution of joint kinetics, where older adults compensate for reduced ankle function by increasing demand on the hip. Paradoxically, this compensatory shift typically coincides with age-related reductions in maximal hip power. Although robotic exoskeletons can provide immediate energetic benefits, conventional control strategies have limited previous studies in this population to specific tasks such as steady-state walking, which do not fully reflect mobility demands in the home and community. Here, we implement a task-agnostic

Learning and memory performance in a rat model of perigestational opioid exposure.

RATIONALE: Nearly one third of women of reproductive age in the United States are prescribed opioids annually; 14% will fill an opioid prescription during pregnancy, and one in five report misuse. Opioid use during pregnancy has given rise to an increasing population of infants born with gestational opioid exposure. At school age, these children show neurodevelopmental impairment and higher rates of learning disabilities. OBJECTIVES: To characterize how exposure to exogenous opioids during brain development affects learning and memory performance, our lab has developed a rat model of perigest

Mental exploration of future choices during immobility theta oscillations.

Mental exploration enables flexible evaluation of potential future choices, guiding decision-making without requiring direct real-world iterations. Although the hippocampus is known to be active while imagining the future, the precise mechanisms that support mental exploration of future choices remain unclear. In the hippocampus, the theta rhythm (4-12 Hz) is prevalent during movement and supports memory coding during real-world exploration by organizing neuronal activity patterns into short virtual path segments (theta sequences) around the rat's location. We observed these theta-related neur

Exploration of Metaperceptions Held by Men Enrolled in Rwanda Men's Resource Centre Programme, Correlates Behaviours and Coping Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Men participating in the Rwanda Men's Resource Centre (RWAMREC) programme, designed to challenge negative masculinity, have exhibited positive shifts in household responsibilities and collaborative decision-making with their wives. However, little was known about how these men believe non-enrolled men perceive them. AIM: The study aimed to explore the metaperceptions of enrolled men regarding how they are perceived by other men in their community and it investigated strategies employed to overcome these metaperceptions. METHOD: Using a qualitative approach, 15 men involved in the

Improving cross-domain generalizability of medical image segmentation using uncertainty and shape-aware continual test-time domain adaptation.

Continual test-time adaptation (CTTA) aims to continuously adapt a source-trained model to a target domain with minimal performance loss while assuming no access to the source data. Typically, source models are trained with empirical risk minimization (ERM) and assumed to perform reasonably on the target domain to allow for further adaptation. However, ERM-trained models often fail to perform adequately on a severely drifted target domain, resulting in unsatisfactory adaptation results. To tackle this issue, we propose a generalizable CTTA framework. First, we incorporate domain-invariant shap

The development of orthography and phonology coupling in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex and its relation to reading.

The left ventral occipito-temporal (lvOT) cortex is considered to house the brain's representation of orthography (i.e., the spelling patterns of words). Because letter-sound coupling is crucial in reading, we investigated the engagement of the lvOT cortex in processing phonology (i.e., the sound patterns of words) as a function of reading acquisition. We tested 47 Polish children both at the beginning of formal literacy instruction and 2 years later. During functional magnetic resonance imaging, children performed auditory phonological tasks from small to large grain size levels (i.e., single

Posture and Muscle Activity during Waste Collection Work.

The musculoskeletal load in waste collection has been examined through simulated assessment of pulling and pushing bins as well as lifting and throwing rubbish bags. With the onset of mechanization, many of these tasks do not exist and workers are faced with other loads not previously assessed. The purpose of this study was to quantify the postures and muscle activity during mechanized waste collection work. Three subtasks of mechanized waste collection were identified, namely driving, bin collection, and egress and access of the vehicle. Spinal, shoulder, and upper limb kinematics along with

Unity or diversity of executive functioning in children and adolescents with post-traumatic stress symptoms? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

For some children, psychological reactions to a traumatic event develop into severe or persistent post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) or the clinical condition of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Cognitive problems in children with PTSS have been reported, but it is not clear which specific functions are affected. Executive functions is a domain of particular interest, given its importance for academic performance and social and emotional functioning. A systematic literature search was performed, and 12 studies with 55 comparisons of executive functions in children with PTSS and health

Stimulation of Different Sectors of the Human Dorsal Premotor Cortex Induces a Shift from Reactive to Predictive Action Strategies and Changes in Motor Inhibition: A Dense Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Mapping Study.

Delayed motor tasks require timely interaction between immobility and action. The neural substrates of these processes probably reside in the premotor and motor circuits; however, fine-grained anatomical/functional information is still lacking. Participants performed a delayed simple reaction task, structured as a ready-set-go sequence, with a fixed, predictable, SET-period. Responses were given with lip movements. During the SET-period, we performed a systematic dense-mapping of the bilateral dorsal premotor region (dPM) by means of single transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) pulses on an

Dynamic reconfiguration of functional brain networks supporting response inhibition in a stop-signal task.

Response inhibition is the ability to suppress automatic actions or behaviors that are not appropriate or are no longer adaptive to the situation. Although many studies have suggested regional brain activation, the nature of the reconfiguration of functional brain networks involved in response inhibition remains unknown. Here, we assessed brain changes associated with response inhibition using graph theoretical analysis applied to functional connectivity data acquired while subjects performed a simple stop-signal task. We identified several ways in which global network organization shifted to

Neural Correlations Underlying Self-Generated Decision in the Frontal Pole Cortex during a Cued Strategy Task.

We have previously shown how the Frontal Pole cortex (FPC) neurons play a unique role in both the monitoring and evaluating of self-generated decisions during feedback in a visually cued strategy task. For each trial of this task, a cue instructed one of two strategies: to either stay with the previous goal or shift to the alternative goal. Each cue was followed by a delay period, then each choice was followed by a feedback. FPC neurons show goal-selective activity exclusively during the feedback period. Here, we studied how neural correlation dynamically changes, along with a trial in FPC. We

Topographic specificity of alpha power during auditory spatial attention.

Visual and somatosensory spatial attention both induce parietal alpha (8-14 Hz) oscillations whose topographical distribution depends on the direction of spatial attentional focus. In the auditory domain, contrasts of parietal alpha power for leftward and rightward attention reveal qualitatively similar lateralization; however, it is not clear whether alpha lateralization changes monotonically with the direction of auditory attention as it does for visual spatial attention. In addition, most previous studies of alpha oscillation did not consider individual differences in alpha frequency, but
