This paper presents a novel neural network called KIII model for pattern recognition in artificial olfaction, whose topological structure and parameters are based on anatomical and electrophysiology experiments in mammalian olfactory system. Six data sets of three volatile organic compounds in different conditions, each with a wide range of concentrations, are obtained by a signal acquisition system with tin oxide gas sensor array. They are input into KIII model for training and test. Experimental results show that the system had a good classification performance in a wide concentration range

Methods for the stereocontrolled construction of 1,1'-disaccharides, 2-deoxy glycosides, and orthoesters are reported. 2-cyclo-octylamino-5-nitropyridine (COANP) single crystals were grown between transparent plates coated with indium tin oxide. The Pockels effect of the crystals was analyzed by an ac modulation method. The figure of merit of electro-optic phase retardation of the COANP crystals is estimated to be 4.2x10(-12) m/V . The crystals were protected by the plates, and the figure of merit of the phase retardation of the crystals did not decrease with time. We believe that the crystal-growth method described is applicable to other organic compounds whose crystal growth from a melt is feasible.

High-performance capillary electrophoresis is applied to the separation of different inorganic and organic arsenic and selenium compounds. In comparison with UV-detection, an approach with conductivity detection is described expecting higher sensitivity and universality. In this case the capillary was statically modified with CTAB before the electromigration procedure. The separation was performed with an electrolyte system consisting of CHES and Triton X-100. A method is described for synthesis of a tin reagent, triethylstannylpropanoic acid (TESPA), and its attachment to oligonucleotide primers. Except for the expected mobility retardation, the presence of [116Sn]-TESPA did not affect the sequencing ladder on electrophoresis gels. Single i.p. injections of 0.5 mmol F-/kg and repeated i.p. injections of 0.25 mmol F-/kg as NaF or SnF2 to male rats showed that both compounds produced early lesions of kidney tubule demonstrated by an intense increase of urine gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). Disturbance of kidney function with an increase of diuresis and phosphaturia and a decrease of natriuria and kaliuria were more marked in SnF2-treated animals as was the decrease of urine GGT after a few days. These results indicate that tin nephrotoxicity adds to that of fluoride and antagonizes tubule regeneration.

When amalgam was triturated with Hg-In liquid alloys instead of pure mercury, the resultant amalgams released a significantly smaller amount of mercury vapor during setting. After stimulation of the washed human blood platelets by arachidonic acid (AA), the concurrent evaluations for formed malondialdehyde (MDA) measured by the common photometrical thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method, and for thromboxane B2 (TXB2) measured by gas chromatography, revealed that the formed MDA exceeded the amount of TXB2 on a molar base. To assess the presence of primary biliary cirrhosis, 15 patients at various histopathologic stages were studied by Tc-99m IDA hepatobiliary and/or Tc-99m colloid hepatic imaging. In the earlier stages (I and II), seven of eight patients (88%) showed uniform hepatic retention of Tc-99m IDA. Of seven patients in the same stage, however, four (57%) showed no abnormality on Tc-99m colliod imaging.
