Interconnection of periodontal disease and comorbidities: Evidence, mechanisms, and implications.

Periodontitis, a microbiome-driven inflammatory disease of the tooth-attachment apparatus, is epidemiologically linked with other disorders, including cardio-metabolic, cognitive neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases, respiratory infections, and certain cancers. These associations may, in part, be causal, as suggested by interventional studies showing that local treatment of periodontitis reduces systemic inflammation and surrogate markers of comorbid diseases. The potential cause-and-effect connection between periodontitis and comorbidities is corroborated by studies in preclinical models

Clinical approach to rhizomicry based on a case of dentine dysplasia type 1.

Differential diagnosis of generalised rhizomicry (root dwarfism) includes many diseases and syndromes. When the patient has normal stature with no evidence of ghost teeth, no systematic diseases and no history of irradiation or chemotherapy, the dental features are pathognomonic for the diagnosis of dentine dysplasia type 1 (DD-1). In this report, we presented an adult case with DD-1 that had been left undiagnosed and the patient underwent dental implant therapy and orthodontic treatment, despite recognition of early tooth loss. The diagnosis of DD-1 was first established before an orthognathi

Mitochondrial dynamic changes in health and genetic diseases.

Mitochondria are highly specialized in function, but mitochondrial and, therefore, cellular integrity is maintained through their dynamic nature. Through the frequent processes of fusion and fission, mitochondria continuously change in shape and adjust function to meet cellular requirements. Abnormalities in fusion/fission dynamics generate cellular dysfunction that may lead to diseases. Mutations in the genes encoding mitochondrial fusion/fission proteins, such as MFN2 and OPA1, have been associated with an increasing number of genetic disorders, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A

[Extra-oral signs to look for in patients exhibiting oral warning signs of genetic diseases].

This article is aimed at defining guidelines for dental surgeons to manage patients with warning signs of rare genetic diseases. Anomalies of tooth development may occur as an isolated condition or in association with other symptoms in syndromes. In many cases, dental anomalies may be the first manifestations of a genetic disease. The dentist can contribute to the diagnosis, and hence to an early treatment of this syndrome. When one or more dental anomalies are found, practitioners should refer patients to a genetic clinic or a specialized reference center to diagnose genetic diseases. Therefo

A rare dental complication caused by a rare pathogen: Preseptal Cellulitis caused by Pseudomonas Oryzihabitans: a case report.

Various infective complications can be seen after a dental procedure. They are rarely resistant to standard therapy. In the case we present, a case of preseptal cellulitis caused by pseudomonas oryzihabitans after tooth extraction in a male patient who did not have any underlying cause. As in our case, evaluation of the cases resistant to standard treatment in terms of drainage and multidisciplinary management of culture results together with infectious diseases will increase the treatment success rate.

Hard palate abscess and nasopalatine fistula as a result of impacted tooth in jaw − case report.

Impacted teeth are one of causes of patients visits to maxillofacial surgeons or dental surgeons. They are often detected accidentally when diagnosing other diseases in area of the nose, paranasal sinuses or oral cavity. This paper presents the process of diagnostics and treatment of a rare case of a 53-year-old patient, who developed hard palate abscess as a result of caries of impacted tooth accompanied by lateral periodontal cyst and nasopalatine fistula located in jaw.

Decision-making deficits associated with disrupted synchronization between basolateral amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex in rats after tooth loss.

Human studies have shown that multiple teeth loss was significantly associated with cognitive impairment, dementia and Alzheimer's disease. However, the causal relationship between tooth loss and cognitive deficits has not been clarified. Rodents demonstrate human-like cognitive faculties. In this study by performing rat gambling task (RGT), we reported that prolonged tooth loss condition by extracting all left molars in the rats led to an increase in the proportion of poor decision-makers, and decrease in the proportion of good decision-makers compared with controls. No influence was detected

Three-dimensional anatomy of equine incisors: tooth length, enamel cover and age related changes.

BACKGROUND: Equine incisors are subjected to continuous occlusal wear causing multiple, age related changes of the extragingival crown. It is assumed that the occlusal wear is compensated by continued tooth elongation at the apical ends of the teeth. In this study, μCT-datasets offered the opportunity to analyze the three-dimensional appearance of the extra- and intraalveolar parts of the enamel containing dental crown as well as of the enamel-free dental root. Multiple morphometric measurements elucidated age related, morphological changes within the intraalveolar part of the incisors. RESUL

Identification of the risk for osteoporosis in dental patients.

This article describes how dentists can recognize osteoporosis before fractures develop, and discusses whether osteoporosis affects tooth loss or inhibits implant osseointegration. Some success in diagnosing osteoporosis has been obtained using clinical questionnaires that attempt to identify those who have strong risk factors for the disease, and analysis of the sparse trabeculation and thinning of the mandibular cortex often seen in dental panoramic radiographs. The role of osteoporosis in periodontal disease is unclear as there are many conflicting reports, but the evidence suggests that to

Feline endodontics.

One misconception in veterinary medicine is that fractured teeth do not need to be treated, or treatment should consist of extraction only. Two common causes of endodontic disease in the cat are fractures and secondary to cervical line lesions. Endodontic technique can be useful in returning a diseased tooth to normal, pain-free function. Conventional endodontics can be used to treat fractured canine teeth or partially destroyed molars. Surgical endodontics is useful in cases in which an apical seal cannot be established by conventional methods. Pulp capping can preserve a vital tooth as an al

Dental Disease as a Clinical Marker for Coronary Artery Disease Severity: A Narrative Review of Current Evidence and Mechanisms.

Background and Objectives: Coronary atherosclerosis remains a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality. Chronic systemic inflammation has emerged as a key factor in atherosclerosis development. Tooth loss-often the final consequence of periodontitis-has been proposed as a potential clinical marker of systemic inflammation and cardiovascular risk. Objective: This narrative review synthesizes the available literature on the relationship between tooth loss and coronary artery disease (CAD) severity, exploring biological mechanisms, key epidemiological findings, and clinical implications. Tooth periodontal ligament: Direct 3D microCT visualization of the collagen network and how the network changes when the tooth is loaded.

The periodontal ligament (PDL), a soft tissue connecting the tooth and the bone, is essential for tooth movement, bone remodeling and force dissipation. A collagenous network that connects the tooth root surface to the alveolar jaw bone is one of the major components of the PDL. The organization of the collagenous component and how it changes under load is still poorly understood. Here using a state-of-the-art custom-made loading apparatus and a humidified environment inside a microCT, we visualize the PDL collagenous network of a fresh rat molar in 3D at 1 μm voxel size without any fixation o

Intermittent hypoxemia during hemodialysis: AI-based identification of arterial oxygen saturation saw-tooth pattern.

BACKGROUND: Maintenance hemodialysis patients experience high morbidity and mortality, primarily from cardiovascular and infectious diseases. It was discovered recently that low arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) is associated with a pro-inflammatory phenotype and poor patient outcomes. Sleep apnea is highly prevalent in maintenance hemodialysis patients and may contribute to intradialytic hypoxemia. In sleep apnea, normal respiration patterns are disrupted by episodes of apnea because of either disturbed respiratory control (i.e., central sleep apnea) or upper airway obstruction (i.e., obstruc

Multi-Centre External Validation of a Nomogram for 10-Year Periodontal Tooth Loss Prediction.

AIMS: To externally validate the potential applicability of the 2018 classification of periodontal diseases as a risk assessment tool, through the use of a nomogram built on a multivariate predictor model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 459 patients with periodontitis, across four cohorts (three in the United States, and one in the United Kingdom), were retrospectively analysed. After staging and grading periodontitis before active periodontal therapy (APT), patients were categorised by the model as having 'low tooth loss' (≤ 1 teeth lost due periodontal reasons [TLP]) or 'high tooth loss'

Exploring biological mechanisms in orthodontic tooth movement: Bridging the gap between basic research experiments and clinical applications - A comprehensive review.

OBJECTIVES: The molecular mechanisms behind orthodontic tooth movements (OTM) were investigated by clarifying the role of chemical messengers released by cells. METHODS: Using the Cochrane library, Google scholar, and PubMed databases, a literature search was conducted, and studies published from 1984 to 2024 were considered. RESULTS: Both bone growth and remodeling may occur when a tooth is subjected to mechanical stress. These chemicals have a significant effect on the stimulation and regulation of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes during alveolar bone remodeling. This regulation ca

How alcohol and/or tobacco use and raised glycemia are associated with oral hygiene practices among Burkinabè adults: Evidence from the first national non-communicable disease risk factors survey.

Socio-demographic correlates with oral hygiene practices are commonly investigated. The present study aimed to determine whether alcohol and/or tobacco use and hyperglycemia were associated with oral hygiene practices among Burkinabè adults. This descriptive, cross-sectional study included 4550 adults selected through multistage cluster sampling performed during the first WHO STEPS survey conducted in 2013 in Burkina Faso. The practices we considered were the frequencies of tooth cleaning, the fluoridated toothpaste use and the dentist visit within the past-six months. We collected data on sel

Dental Pain in Cats: A Prospective 6-Month Study.

Dental pathology is among the most ubiquitous diseases in cats of all ages. Dental pain is yet to be fully understood in cats and therefore its presence is often missed. To better understand feline dental disease as a pain trigger during routine examination and whether disease severity correlates to the degree of pain, a 6-month prospective study in a cats' only veterinary hospital in Portugal was conducted. Sixty-four cats that randomly presented for different clinical procedures were evaluated. Dental and periodontal abnormalities (primary dental parameters, PDP), as well as clinical signs r
