Does the performance of lower limb peripheral nerve blocks differ among orthopedic sub-specialties? A single institution experience in 246 patients.

OBJECTIVES: Continuous peripheral nerve blocks (cPNBs) have shown promising results in pain management after orthopaedic surgeries. However, they can be associated with some risks and limitations. The purpose of this study is to describe our experience with the cPNBs regarding efficacy and adverse events in patients undergoing orthopedic surgeries on the lower extremity in different subspecialties. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study on collected data from perineural catheters for pain management after orthopedic surgeries in lower limbs. Catheters were placed by experienced anesthesi

Does Surgical-site Multimodal Drug Injection After Palmar Plating of Distal Radius Fractures Improve Pain Scores?

BACKGROUND: Although palmar locked plating is a stable fixation method frequently used to treat unstable distal radius fractures (DRFs), surgical treatment may be painful, and so interventions to decrease that pain might improve our patients' experiences with surgery. Some surgeons use local multimodal drug injections to decrease postoperative pain after lower-extremity arthroplasty, but little is known about the effectiveness of a local multimodal drug injection in patients who undergo palmar plating for DRFs. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Do patients who receive a local multimodal drug injection

Which Patients in the FLS Should Be Prioritised for a DXA Scan Within 12 Weeks?

At Stavanger University Hospital (SUH), patients aged 50 years and above with a fracture after a fall are included in our Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) at the orthopaedic department, due to their high imminent fracture risk. The FLS at SUH keeps a quality registry, including index fractures, fall from standing/walking, preventive factors, Dual Absorptiometry X-ray (DXA) results and treatment status, in addition to risk factors such as chronic diseases. As in many other hospitals and countries, the capacity of the DXA scanner at SUH does not meet the needs of the ageing population. As such, FL

Postintensive Care Syndrome in Surgical Patients: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Postintensive care syndrome (PICS) describes symptoms after treatment in an intensive care unit (ICU). Impaired cognitive, physical, mental, and social recovery may occur, which can lead to a reduction in health-related quality of life. Surgical ICU patients represent a heterogeneous population with distinct baseline characteristics and multiple risk factors. However, evidence on PICS in surgical patients has not yet been comprehensively mapped. OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of evidence on PICS symptoms in surgical patients and to identify research gaps. METHODS: The review w

INTRODUCTION/RATIONALE: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a leading cause of death among adults, resulting in approximately 214,110 TBI-related hospitalizations and 69,473 TBI-related deaths in the United States. There remains some debate regarding the optimal timing of craniotomy particularly as it relates to the use of intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring. OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to determine the association of time to craniotomy intervention (≤6 or >6 hr), ICP monitoring, and trauma center level on patient outcomes in blunt, severe, non-subarachnoid TBI with skull fracture. METHODS:
