Sex differences in the effect of acute tryptophan depletion on declarative episodic memory: a pooled analysis of nine studies.

Acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) studies have shown that serotonin plays a role in learning and memory processes. In this study, we performed a pooled analysis of nine ATD studies in order to examine the nature of the memory-impairing effects of ATD and mediating factors, such as gender, age and vulnerability for disease in which disturbed serotonin was hypothesized to play a role. All studies that were used in this pooled analysis assessed declarative episodic memory using a verbal learning task paradigm. Immediate recall, delayed recall, and delayed recognition scores were examined. A total …

Cognitive, social, and economic costs of allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis is a highly prevalent, chronic condition. In addition to physical discomfort, rhinitis symptoms have been associated with detrimental effects on the psychological and social aspects of patients' lives. In allergy-specific questionnaires, subjects with allergic rhinitis consistently report lower quality of life than nonallergic controls. Untreated patients are embarrassed and frustrated by their allergy symptoms. Atopic individuals consistently exhibit significant declines in cognitive processing, psychomotor speed, verbal learning, and memory during allergy season. The discom…

Exploring Medical Students' Learning Through Interprofessional Interactions in Clinical Clerkships: A Qualitative Analysis.

PURPOSE: Medical students need help navigating clinical environments to find ways to engage in and learn from clinical work. Previous explorations focused on how physicians help students, largely neglecting the potential contributions of other health professionals (OHPs). This study explores how students learn to participate in clinical work through interactions with OHPs. METHOD: Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, researchers conducted 17 semistructured interviews with Harvard Medical School students completing clinical clerkships between 2023 and 2024. Students drew rich pictu

Mnemonic anosognosia in Alzheimer's disease: a test of Agnew and Morris (1998).

Agnew and Morris [Agnew, S. K. & Morris, R. G. (1998). The heterogeneity of anosognosia for memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease: A review of the literature and a proposed model. Aging and Mental Health, 2, 9-15] model of awareness for memory functioning has attempted to account for the variance of anosognosia exhibited within the Alzheimer's disease (AD) population. There has been tentative evidence to suggest that the mnemonic anosognosia sub-type, proposed by this model, is common within the early stages of AD. However, this study is the first directly to test the model. Eighteen older

Pediatric Organ Transplantation and Learning Disabilities: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Organ transplant is a vital treatment for pediatric patients. Kidney, liver, heart, and other organ transplants can significantly improve the quality of life for children with various chronic diseases and can improve long-term survival rates. However, the effects of transplant on cognitive and educational aspects should be considered, including the effects of pre- and posttransplant treatment protocols, medications, psychosocial stress, and surgical interventions. Learning disabilities can negatively affect the child's educational life, social relationships, and overall quality of

Academic skills in children with cerebral palsy and specific learning disorders.

AIM: To investigate the prevalence and clinical manifestations of reading, writing, and mathematics disorders in children with cerebral palsy (CP). We explored how the clinical profile of these children differed from those with specific learning disorders (SLDs), taking into account several factors, particularly IQ scores, neuropsychological aspects, and the presence of a visual impairment. METHOD: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in 42 children with CP (mean age 9 years 8 months; SD = 2 years 2 months) and 60 children with SLDs (mean age 10 years; SD = 1 year 7 months). Statistical Learning and the Effect of Starting Small in Developmental Dyslexia.

Purpose Impairments in statistical learning abilities of individuals with developmental dyslexia (DD) have been demonstrated in word segmentation and in visual artificial grammar learning (AGL) tasks, but so far, little attention has been devoted to the AGL abilities of this population in the acoustic verbal domain. This study aimed to test whether adolescents with dyslexia have difficulties in extracting abstract patterns from auditory sequences of nonsense syllables based on a finite state grammar relative to typically developing (TD) peers. We also tested whether incremental presentation of

Use of the dichotic listening technique with learning disabilities.

Dichotic listening (DL) techniques have been used extensively as a non-invasive procedure to assess language lateralization among children with and without learning disabilities (LD), and with individuals who have other auditory system related brain disorders. Results of studies using DL have indicated that language is lateralized in children with LD and that the lateralized language asymmetries do not develop after age 6 nor are they affected by gender. Observed differences in lateralized language processes between control children and those with LD were found not due to delayed cerebral domi

The association between childhood trauma and memory functioning in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Both neurocognitive impairments and a history of childhood abuse are highly prevalent in patients with schizophrenia. Childhood trauma has been associated with memory impairment as well as hippocampal volume reduction in adult survivors. The aim of the following study was to examine the contribution of childhood adversity to verbal memory functioning in people with schizophrenia. METHODS: Eighty-five outpatients with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition) diagnosis of chronic schizophrenia were separated into 2 groups on the basis of self-reports o

[Numbers, counting and calculating problems in view of cognitive neurology].

The ability to count and calculate is a human-specific skill comprised of understanding numeric values and categories and performing numerical operations; it is an acoustic-verbal symbolic activity that may be expressed in writing and understood by reading. The neuronal bases and precursors of cognitive systems have been supplied to mankind by the process of evolution. Abilities to create symbols (speech, visual letter and number symbols) must have played a decisive role in the emergence of man from the world of primates. Although counting and calculating problems are classified into numerous

Spatial knowledge of children with spina bifida in a virtual large-scale space.

The spatial knowledge of 18 children with spina bifida and 18 healthy control children (matched according to sex, age, and verbal IQ) was investigated in a computer-simulated environment. All children had to learn a route through a virtual floor system containing 18 landmarks. Controlling for cognitive abilities, the results revealed that children with spina bifida showed impaired route knowledge but not an impaired landmark knowledge. Thus the results suggest that children with spina bifida are not impaired in all large-scale abilities similarly. The impairments of the children with spina bif

Effects of a significant-other observer on neuropsychological test performance.

The present study examined the effects of a third-party observer on neuropsychological test performance in a sample of 30 university students seeking evaluation for learning disability. A significant-other (defined as a parent, sibling, close friend, spouse, or partner) observed portions of a neuropsychological testing session. Subjects were administered a battery of tests, including seven repeatable measures, chosen to assess diverse neuropsychological functions. In the presence of an observer, performance deficits were found on tests of attention, speed of information processing, and verbal

Self-instructional intervention for teaching generalized problem-solving within a functional task sequence.

Effects of an intervention that combined self-instruction with multiple exemplar training on the generalized problem solving of five high school students with severe mental retardation were examined. Innovative features of the intervention included (a) preteaching self-instruction to proficiency with one exemplar before introducing multiple exemplars and (b) embedding problem situations within a functional task sequence. Findings indicated that all students learned to perform five trained problem responses and five generalized responses while self-instructing. The self-instructional interventi

Systemic safety inequities for people with learning disabilities: a qualitative integrative analysis of the experiences of English health and social care for people with learning disabilities, their families and carers.

BACKGROUND: Failures in care for people with learning disabilities have been repeatedly highlighted and remain an international issue, exemplified by a disparity in premature death due to poor quality and unsafe care. This needs urgent attention. Therefore, the aim of the study was to understand the care experiences of people with learning disabilities, and explore the potential patient safety issues they, their carers and families raised. METHODS: Two data sources exploring the lived experience of care for people with learning disabilities were synthesised using an integrative approach, and
