A 36-year-old woman had intermittent downbeat nystagmus. Between episodes of downbeat nystagmus, eye movements were normal, except for stationary positional nystagmus and decreased vestibulo-ocular responses (VOR) to rotation. Smooth pursuit, optokinetic nystagmus, and visual-VOR interactions, which are usually impaired in patients with downbeat nystagmus and cerebellar dysfunction, were normal. Computed tomography and findings during a suboccipital craniotomy demonstrated a mild Chiari malformation, type 1. Episodic downbeat nystagmus that is not associated with other ocular motor abnormaliti

The influence of space flight factors on optomotor reactions and optokinetic resistance of 17 cosmonauts after prolonged (75 and 185 days) and short-term (4, 7, 14 days) flights is discussed.

This study explored the hypothesis that an association exists between postrotary nystagmus hyporesponsivity and behavioral problems in learning-disabled children. Supporting this conclusion was the finding that the learning-disabled boys rated by teachers as displaying the most socially inappropriate behaviors had significantly lower postrotary nystagmus durations than other learning-disabled boys. In addition, near significant associations were obtained between subnormal nystagmus functioning and socially inappropriate responding for boys and girls combined. Learning-disabled girls were evalu

Stapedius-reflex measurement and the glycerol-test in combination with pure tone audiogram and speech-audiogram are reliable methods for an exact diagnosis of Menière's disease. For differential diagnosis one should know the so called "tensor tympani syndrome" which is discussed in this paper.

PURPOSE: Showing the interest of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in paediatric neurological vestibulospinal pathology detection and followup.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The vestibular evoked myogenic potentials testing apparatus presented is now commonly used in ENT clinics for patients from 1 month of age. Our system and protocol permits control to evoke and select the best EMG level and makes possible a comparison of data from different sides or level of stimulation or different sessions. Normal vestibular evoked myogenic potentials latencies obtained with tone bursts were remarkably stab

The study objective was to understand how the contralesional labyrinth contributes to gaze and gait stability after unilateral vestibular deafferentation (UVD). Head impulse testing (vHIT) was completed in 37 individuals [22 women (59%); age 52.13 ± 11.59 yr, mean ± SD] with UVD from vestibular schwannoma resection. Compensatory saccades (CS) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain were analyzed for both ipsilesional and contralesional impulses. Gait speed (10-m walk test) and endurance (2-min walk test) were collected for 35 individuals. CS were recruited during contralesional head rotation re

We report on five patients with high signals in the labyrinth on unenhanced magnetic resonance imaging who developed sudden hearing loss and vertigo. Weissman et al. (1992) suggested the possibility that such high signals were caused by hemorrhage. We assessed these patients using audiograms, caloric tests, and auditory brainstem responses to investigate the possibility of inner ear hemorrhage. Most of the patients were found to have severe and irreversible impairment of both cochlear and vestibular function. These findings were consistent with the hypothesis that their symptoms were caused by

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of Vertigoheel on central vestibular compensation and cognitive deficits in rats subjected to peripheral vestibular loss. Young adult male Long Evans rats were subjected to bilateral vestibular insults through irreversible sequential ototoxic destructions of the vestibular sensory organs. Vestibular syndrome characteristics were monitored at several time points over days and weeks following the sequential insults, using a combination of behavioral assessment paradigms allowing appreciation of patterns of change in static and dynamic deficits, toge

Following vestibular neuritis (VN), long term prognosis is not dependent on the magnitude of the residual peripheral function as measured with either caloric or the video head-impulse test. Rather, recovery is determined by a combination of visuo-vestibular (visual dependence), psychological (anxiety) and vestibular perceptual factors. Our recent research in healthy individuals has also revealed a strong association between the degree of lateralisation of vestibulo-cortical processing and gating of vestibular signals, anxiety and visual dependence. In the context of several functional brain ch

Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) is an X-linked recessive rare disease condition in which audiological deficit is also observed. A 4-year-old male child with PMD underwent an audiological evaluation. The results suggested normal middle ear and outer hair cells functioning, with only peak I of the auditory brainstem response present until 30 dBnHL. Further, the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential showed delayed latencies with normal amplitudes. In this case report, we attempt to explain the audio-vestibular test results and correlate them with the pathophysiology. This is the first

Recent studies have shown that corticosteroid treatment of patients with vestibular neuritis significantly improves recovery of peripheral vestibular function. At follow-up, the number of patients with a normal caloric response was larger among those treated with corticosteroids. However, improvement of caloric responses may not correlate directly with patient symptoms and up to now improved vertigo/dizziness due to corticosteroid treatment has not been reported. Consequently, although corticosteroid may be a treatment option, it should currently only be considered in those vestibular neuritis

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to quantify peripheral-vestibular deficits that may contribute to imbalanced stance/gait in patients with inflammatory neuropathies.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients (58 ± 15 y [mean age ± 1SD]; chronic-inflammatory-demyelinating-polyneuropathy = 10, Guillain-Barré Syndrome = 5, Anti-MAG peripheral neuropathy = 2, multifocal-motor-neuropathy = 4) were compared with 26 healthy controls. All subjects received video-head-impulse testing (vHIT), caloric irrigation and cervical/ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic-potentials (VEMPs). The Yardley vertigo-symptom-scale (VSS) was used to

BACKGROUND: Accessory auricular tissue is a common congenital anomaly ranging from an accessory skin appendage to a separate pinna. The association between auditory or vestibular dysfunction and accessory auricular tissue is debated, and little is known about related solid organ abnormalities. We examine the prevalence of accessory auricular tissue, its association between solid organ abnormalities and auditory/vestibular dysfunction, and its management.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using the 2000 to 2012 HCUP kids' inpatient database. Live newborns with a diagnosis of

BACKGROUND: Sub-concussive and concussive impacts sustained during contact sports such as rugby may affect neurocognitive performance, vestibular-ocular-motor function, symptom burden and academic ability.
METHOD: Student-athletes (n = 146) participating in rugby union British Universities or domestic competitions were assessed on the Immediate Post-Concussion and Cognitive Test, Post-Concussion Symptom Scale, vestibular-oculo-motor screening tool and revised perceived academic impact tool. Individual change from pre-season (July-September 2021) to 2-weeks following last exposure to contact (

BACKGROUND: Time to recovery for symptom burden and neurocognition following a Sports-Related Concussion (SRC) has previously been determined by consolidating varying re-assessment time points into a singular point, and has not been established for Vestibular-Ocular-Motor (VOM) function or academic ability.
OBJECTIVES: Establish when recovery of symptom burden, neurocognition, VOM function, and academic ability occurs in university-aged student-athletes.
METHODS: Student-athletes completed an assessment battery (Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS), Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and C
