Spontaneous haemopneumothorax (SHP) is a rare, potential life-threatening emergency. Patients suffering from spontaneous haemopneumothorax can present at the emergency department with dyspnoea and unexplained signs of significant hypovolemia. Discussion about patient selection, timing and technique of operation is still alive. Standard chest roentgenogram is the most useful way to diagnose spontaneous haemopneumothorax, although false negative results exist. A 4-year-old male presented with abdominal pain. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen was negative, but a pleural effusion and mass was noted in the lower left thorax. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to highlight the unique case of an intrathoracic mesothelial cyst in a 5-year-old child that was treated with a thoracoscopic resection.
BACKGROUND: Mesothelial cysts are benign cysts lined by a single layer of mesothelial cells. These rare lesions can be found on, or adjacent to, serous membranes but are only occasionally located within the thorax. The literature describing multimodal treatment of thymomas consists almost exclusively of retrospective case series. We have used a systematic review to investigate the role of surgery in the management of thymomas. The use of surgery as the sole therapeutic maneuver in thymoma depends on the stage considered. A 19-year-old man presented with pneumonia, cough, and occasional dyspnea.
