PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of central hole-induced ring-shaped dysphotopsia after posterior chamber phakic implantable collamer lens (ICL) with central hole (hole ICL) implantation and to investigate the causes of central hole-induced dysphotopsia.
METHODS: The clinical study enrolled 29 eyes of 15 consecutive myopic patients implanted with hole ICL. The incidence of ring-shaped dysphotopsia after hole ICL implantation was evaluated. In the experimental simulation study, non-sequential ray tracing was used to construct myopic human eye models with hole ICL and ICL without a central ho

PURPOSE: To evaluate the visual, refractive, and aberrometric outcomes of a bitoric intraocular lens (IOL) and its stability and alignment within the capsular bag.
METHODS: A retrospective study including 41 eyes of 24 patients with preexisting corneal astigmatism of 0.75 diopters or greater undergoing cataract surgery with implantation of the bitoric IOL AT TORBI 709M (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany). Visual and refractive outcomes were evaluated during a 3-month follow-up period. The misalignment between intended and real axis and the levels of corneal, internal, and ocular aberrations (

PURPOSE: This study aims to describe a two-step surgical technique for placement of a posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) in cases with crystalline lens subluxation resulting from non-progressive zonular dialysis.
METHODS: The first stage entails a phacoemulsification with creation of a 4-mm posterior capsular opening using an automated vitrector. The second stage performed 6 weeks later includes an anterior vitrectomy and injection of a foldable three-piece IOL in the sulcus. The haptics of IOL are positioned in the sulcus while the optic is pushed behind the posterior capsular opening

PURPOSE: This case report describes an experience with prosthetic replacement of ocular surface ecosystem (PROSE) device in an Indian patient with post-LASIK corneal ectasia.
CASE REPORT: Keratoconus and corneal ectasia (post-LASIK) are characterized by progressive thinning and steepening of the cornea. Common symptoms experienced by patients in such conditions range from mild to severe vision impairments to an array of visual symptoms such as glare and ghosting. Scleral lenses are considered a vision-saving device when all other modalities fail. The patient in this case report had larger pal

PURPOSES: Compare the visual acuity of patients who underwent cataract surgery by phacoemulsification with IOL AcrySof(®) toric implantation versus AcrySof(®) IQ and evaluate the reduction of cylindrical diopters (CD) in the postoperative period.
METHODS: Analytical and retrospective study of 149 eyes with 1 or more diopters of regular symmetrical keratometric astigmatism, which underwent cataract surgery by phacoemulsification. The eyes were divided into two groups: the toric group with 85 eyes and the non-toric group with 64 eyes. In the pre-operative phase, topographic data and refraction

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of iris claw intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for correction of monocular surgical aphakia in eyes with no capsular support. This is a prospective interventional case series of 30 eyes of monocular surgical aphakia. Patients underwent posterior iris claw implantation 4 weeks after the primary surgery. Aphakia which resulted due to posterior capsular rupture, large zonulo-dialysis (>180°) and cases of intracapsular cataract extraction in subluxated cataractous lens (>180°) where a posterior chamber IOL could not be placed were included in this study. BACKGROUND: To evaluate the visual and refractive outcomes of intrastromal corneal ring segment (ICRS) in keratoconic eyes at different stages.
METHODS: Two hundred and nineteen keratoconic eyes were divided into three groups as a function of stage of keratoconus (stages I, II and III). There were 115 eyes with stage I, 84 eyes with stage II and 20 eyes with stage III. Snellen uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), best corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and residual refractive errors analyzed using vector analysis were recorded before surgery and 6 months post-surgery.
RESULTS: Fo

PURPOSE: To report the long-term outcomes of Boston keratoprosthesis type II implantation in the management of severe ocular surface disease and corneal blindness through a retrospective interventional case series.
METHODS: This retrospective review included medical records of patients who underwent Boston keratoprosthesis type II implantation at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary from January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2009. The main outcome measures analyzed were visual acuity, keratoprosthesis retention, and postoperative complications.

PURPOSE: To examine the effect of astigmatism on visual acuity at various distances in eyes with a diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL).
SETTING: Hayashi Eye Hospital, Fukuoka, Japan.
METHODS: In this study, eyes had implantation of a diffractive multifocal IOL with a +3.00 diopter (D) addition (add) (AcrySof ReSTOR SN6AD1), a diffractive multifocal IOL with a +4.00 D add (AcrySof ReSTOR SN6AD3), or a monofocal IOL (AcrySof SN60WF). Astigmatism was simulated by adding cylindrical lenses of various diopters (0.00, 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00), after which distance-corrected acuity was mea

We report the case of a 19-year-old male diagnosed with progressive keratoconus in both eyes. The therapeutic option was: intrastromal ring segment implantation in both eyes, followed by corneal collagen cross-linking with riboflavin and ultraviolet type A at left eye. The postoperative results were favorable: early improvement of vision, no intra- or postoperative complications and without signs of disease progression.

PURPOSE: To investigate Ferrara intrastromal ring segments (FIRS) as a therapeutic opportunity to treat keratoconus (KC), to reduce the necessity for cornea transplant, and to improve quality of vision of patients with this disease. We demonstrate that the procedure is safe, reversible, and reliable, and can delay/stop the KC progression.
METHODS: A total of 130 eyes of 83 patients with KC, intolerant to contact lenses, implanted with FIRS were considered. Average follow-up was 37 months with a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 5 years. For all patients, manifest refraction, uncorrected vis

OBJECTIVE: To assess the visual outcomes and accommodative amplitude of accommodating intraocular lens (AIOL).
METHODS: Case control study. Thirty eyes of 22 patients with cataracts had undergone phacoemulsification and implantation of AIOL. Twenty nine eyes of 22 age- and sex-matched patients with cataracts had the same surgery but foldable acrylic IOL were used as the controls. All patients were assessed for accommodation amplitude, visual acuity and for change of anterior chamber depth (ACD) at 6 and 12 months after surgery. Accommodation amplitude was measured using the pushing-up test. T
