Sex- and Age-dependent Effects of Orexin 1 Receptor Blockade on Open-Field Behavior and Neuronal Activity.

Adolescence is a sensitive and critical period in brain development where psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder are more likely to emerge following a stressful life event. Females are two times more likely to suffer from psychiatric disorders than males. Patients with these disorders show alterations in orexins (also called hypocretins), important neuropeptides that regulate arousal, wakefulness and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity. Little is known on the role of orexins in mediating arousal behaviors in male and female rats during

Anxiety-like behavior and other consequences of early life stress in mice with increased protein kinase A activity.

Anxiety disorders are associated with abnormalities in fear-learning and bias to threat; early life experiences are influential to the development of an anxiety-like phenotype in adulthood. We recently reported that adult mice (Prkar1a+/-) with haploinsufficiency for the main regulatory subunit of the protein kinase A (PKA) exhibit an anxiety-like phenotype associated with increased PKA activity in the amygdala. PKA is the main effector of cyclic adenosine mono-phosphate signaling, a key pathway involved in the regulation of fear learning. Since anxiety has developmental and genetic components

The Adolescent Girls' Anaemia Control Programme: a decade of programming experience to break the inter-generational cycle of malnutrition in India.

OBJECTIVE: To document the scale-up of India’s Adolescent Girls’ Anaemia Control Programme following a knowledge-centred framework for scaling up nutrition interventions and to identify the critical elements of and lessons learned from a decade of programme experience for the control of anaemia in adolescent girls. DESIGN: We reviewed all articles, programme and project reports, and baseline and endline assessments published between 1995 and 2012 regarding the control of anaemia through intermittent iron and folic acid supplementation; key programme specialists and managers were interviewed t

Stakeholder perspectives on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights in Malawi: Barriers, incentives, and opportunities for reform.

Social norms, institutional weaknesses, and gaps between policy commitments and implementation in Malawi continue to pose significant barriers to adolescents' realisation of their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Early marriage, gender-based violence, and limited access to contraception and comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) undermine adolescents' wellbeing and future opportunities. This qualitative study examines how actor interests, institutional arrangements, and normative contexts shape the delivery of and access to adolescent-friendly health and education services in

Design and implementation of a theory of planned behavior-based nutrition education intervention for adolescent girls in rural Nepal: a school-based cluster-randomized controlled trial.

Adolescence is a pivotal period of physical, psychological, and cognitive development during which individuals are highly vulnerable to nutritional deficiency. Undernutrition, overweight/obesity, and anemia are prominent public health concerns in low- and middle-income countries, including Nepal. Anemia affects nearly one-quarter of individuals aged 10-24 years globally, with a disproportionately high burden in resource-constrained settings. This study primarily aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a theory-driven school-based nutrition education intervention in improving dietary behaviors, h

A dynamic cascade model of the development of substance-use onset.

Although the onset of illicit substance use during adolescence can hit parents abruptly like a raging flood, its origins likely start as a trickle in early childhood. Understanding antecedent factors and how they grow into a stream that leads to adolescent drug use is important for theories of social development as well as policy formulations to prevent onset. Based on a review of the extant literature, we posited a dynamic cascade model of the development of adolescent substance-use onset, specifying that (1) temporally distinct domains of biological factors, social ecology, early parenting,

The Dogma of Running Injuries: Perceptions of Adolescent and Adult Runners.

CONTEXT: Adults perceive certain factors to increase or decrease the risk of sustaining running-related injuries, but many of their perceptions are not supported by research. Little is known about the perceptions that adolescent runners hold. Investigating perceptions for adolescent runners is needed to assist in the development of future injury educational materials, as these resources may need to be tailored differently for adolescents and adults. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that adolescent runners perceive as risk or protective factors for running-related injuries and to compare these p

Adolescent pregnancy in Sao Tome and Principe: are there different obstetric and perinatal outcomes?

BACKGROUND: Adolescent childbirth is a major public health problem in Sao Tome and Principe (STP). Adolescent pregnancy and childbirth can carry a risk of morbidity associated with the physiological and sociological characteristics of teenage girls. This study aims to identify the main adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes for adolescent pregnancies in the Hospital Dr. Ayres de Menezes (HAM), the only hospital in STP. METHODS: An institution-based cross-sectional study. Pregnant women ≤ 19 years of age (n = 104) were compared to non-adolescent women (n = 414). The obstetric and perinatal o

Adolescent cocaine exposure enhances the GABAergic transmission in the prelimbic cortex of adult mice.

We have recently shown in rats that adolescent cocaine exposure induces prolonged modifications on synapses in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), which might contribute to long-term behavioral outcomes in adulthood. In this study, we further investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying adolescent cocaine exposure-related psychiatric problems in adulthood, especially focusing on the alterations of GABAergic transmission in prelimbic cortex (PrL), 1 subregion of mPFC. Consistent with a previous study, adolescent cocaine-exposed mice exhibited enhanced anxiety-like behaviors in their adulthood.

Male-biased vulnerability of mouse brain tryptophan/kynurenine and glutamate systems to adolescent exposures to concentrated ambient ultrafine particle air pollution.

Air pollution (AP) exposures have been associated with numerous neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia, all male-biased disorders with onsets from early life to late adolescence/early adulthood. While prior experimental studies have focused on effects of AP exposures during early brain development, brain development actually extends well into early adulthood. The current study in mice sought to extend the understanding of developmental brain vulnerability during adolescence, a later but signif

Novel targeted therapeutic agents for the treatment of childhood, adolescent and young adult non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) are a heterogeneous group of malignancies. Most NHLs in children, adolescent and young adult patients are aggressive lymphomas that are generally treated with multi-agent chemotherapy or immunochemotherapy regimens. While overall survival is high, the treatment can lead to a high rate of acute and long-term toxicity. However, in the rarer instance of relapsed or refractory disease, outcomes are dismal. Novel therapeutic approaches to the treatment of both T-cell and B-cell NHLs are critical to improve outcomes while also minimising the associated toxicity of curren

Emotion regulation, emotion recognition, and empathy in adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Emotional functions may play an important role in anorexia nervosa (AN). The onset of the disorder generally occurs during adolescence, which is a critical period of emotional development. However, most studies that evaluated emotional functions in AN were conducted in adult patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate emotion regulation, emotion recognition, and empathy skills in adolescent girls with AN by controlling for the effects of depression and anxiety symptoms, childhood traumatic experiences, and attachment security on emotional functions. METHODS: Thirty-two adolescent

Anxiety- and depressive-like profiles during early- and mid-adolescence in the female Wistar Kyoto rat.

Approaches for the development of preclinical models of depression extensively use adult and male animals owing to the discrepancies arising out of the hormonal flux in adult females and adolescents during attainment of puberty. Thus the increased vulnerability of females towards clinical depression and anxiety-related disorders remains incompletely understood. Development of clinical models of depression in adolescent females is essential in order to evolve effective treatment strategies for adolescent depression. In the present study, we have examined the anxiety and depressive-like profiles

Protracted 'anti-addictive' effects of adolescent phenylpropanolamine exposure in C57BL/6J mice.

Exposure to the once highly prevalent over-the-counter (OTC) sympathomimetic phenylpropanolamine (PPA; +/--norephedrine) during pre-adolescence alters the developmental trajectory of catecholamine and amino acid neurotransmitter systems in the nucleus accumbens (NAC) that culminate in a 'pro-addictive' phenotype in adulthood. Thus, the present study sought to extend these earlier data by examining the long-term consequences of repeated PPA treatment during adolescence upon the behavioral and neurochemical responses to cocaine. For this, C57BL/6J mice were pre-treated with PPA (0-40 mg/kg) duri

Parent-Adolescent (In)Congruence in Closeness and Conflict: Differential Links to Adolescent Emotion Regulation.

Parent-adolescent perceptual (in)congruence in relationship has important implications for adolescent emotion regulation, yet little is known about how congruence and discrepancies in perceived closeness and conflict relate to cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. To address this gap, the present study examined these associations across early, middle, and late adolescence. Data were drawn from 1,875 Chinese parent-adolescent dyads (adolescents: Mage = 13.06, SDage = 2.78, 50% female; parents: Mage = 40.23, SDage = 5.32, 76.5% mothers). The effects of childhood maltreatment, recent interpersonal and noninterpersonal stress, and HPA-axis multilocus genetic variation on prospective changes in adolescent depressive symptoms: A multiwave longitudinal study.

Based on a multiwave, two-year prospective design, this study is the first to examine the extent to which multilocus hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis)-related genetic variants, childhood maltreatment, and recent stress jointly predicted prospective changes in adolescent depressive symptoms. A theory-driven multilocus genetic profile score (MGPS) was calculated to combine the effects of six common polymorphisms within HPA-axis related genes (CRHR1, NR3C1, NR3C2, FKBP5, COMT, and HTR1A) in a sample of Chinese Han adolescents (N = 827; 50.2% boys; Mage = 16.45 ± 1.36 years). Efficacy to avoid violence and parenting: A moderated mediation of violence exposure for African American urban-dwelling boys.

We took a risk and resilience approach to investigating how witnessing physical violence influences adolescent violent behaviors overtime. We proposed efficacy to avoid violence as a major path of influence in this negative trajectory of adolescent development. We also focus on the protective roles of parenting behaviors for African American boys living in disadvantaged contexts. Most of our sample of 310 African American adolescent males (M age = 13.50, SD = .620) had experienced significant amounts of violence, but they also reported continued efficacy to avoid violence. We tested a first st…

A Developmental Perspective on Young Adult Romantic Relationships: Examining Family and Individual Factors in Adolescence.

The ability to develop and maintain healthy romantic relationships is a key developmental task in young adulthood. The present study investigated how adolescent interpersonal skills (assertiveness, positive engagement) and family processes (family climate, parenting practices) influence the development of young adult romantic relationship functioning. We evaluated cross-lag structural equation models with a sample of 974 early adolescents living in rural and semi-rural communities in Pennsylvania and Iowa, starting in sixth grade (mean age = 12.4, 62.1% female) and followed into young adulthoo
