[Effect of calcium deficiency and addition of calcium antagonists on motoneuron synaptic potentials of isolated Emys orbicularis turtle spinal cord].

In experiments carried out on the isolated spinal cord of the tortoise Emys orbicularis postsynaptic potentials produced in spinal motoneurons by stimulation of the descending tracts and dorsal roots were investigated by means of the intracellular recording technique. Postsynaptic potentials were completely and reversibly blocked in Ca2+-free solutions containing 5.0 mM Mg2+ or 2.0 mM Mn2+. The amplitude and frequency of spontaneous synaptic potentials were also reduced under these conditions. The effect of Ca2+-free medium indicates that the synaptic transmission in these synapses is mediated

Projection of limb venous afferents to the feline motor-sensory cortex.

Previous studies have shown that the cerebral cortex has the capacity to exert a marked influence on the circulatory system. Recently low threshold femoral vein afferent fiber projections to the spinal cord were reported and were found to have powerful reflex connections to motor neurons. The venous afferents appeared to be attractive candidates to provide afferent input to the cortex by the activation of ascending sensory systems. Therefore the experiments described in this report were carried out to determine the existence and functional organization of venous afferent projections to the cer

Mesencephalic chronic electrodes in pain patients. An electrophysiological study.

Early components of lemniscal potentials after contralateral median nerve or mechanical stimulus are due to lemniscal pathways, whereas later components, after 70 msec appearing bilaterally and at higher stimulus intensities probably express extralemniscal activity. Evoked potentials in the central gray matter show much smaller amplitudes compared with somatosensory cortical evoked potentials (SSEP). The strongest component is a negative wave after 70--100 msec. Longer conditioning stimulation of the lemniscal system inhibits late components in the median nerve evoked cortical potentials. On t

alpha-Bungarotoxin-acetylcholine receptors in the chick ciliary ganglion: effects of deafferentation and axotomy.

alpha-Bungarotoxin (alpha-BuTX) binds in a saturable and practically irreversible fashion to membrane-associated receptors in the ciliary ganglion of the adult chick. The binding of toxin to receptors is competitively inhibited by nicotinic cholinergic ligands, and for these properties the receptors are regarded as acetylcholine receptors of the nicotinic type (alpha-buTX-AChRs). The rate constant of association (K1) and dissociation (K-1) of the toxin-receptor reaction has been estimated to be K1 = 7.4 x 104 M(-1) sec(-1) and K-1 = 9.6 X 10(-6) sec(-1), respectively. Light autoradiography sho

The prefrontal cortex of the cat: anatomical subdivisions based on retrograde labeling of cells in the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus.

Different areas of the frontal cortex of the cat were injected with small amounts of horseradish peroxidase. The region of labeled cells in the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus (MD) were related to the injected areas. Distinct relations between subdivisions of MD and of the prefrontal cortex were established: a rather large central sector of MD projects to the gyrus proreus and the anterior parts of the gyri sigmoideus, rectus, and frontalis. A narrow lateral band of anterior MD neurons projects predominantly to an area on both sides of the sulcus praesylvius, whereas a postero-lateral band

Short-axon cells in the olfactory bulb: dendrodendritic synaptic interactions.

1. In the rabbit olfactory bulb, analysis has been carried out of extracellular unitary responses in the glomerular layer to olfactory nerve volleys. 2. Units in the glomerular layer responded to single volleys with single, double, triple or longer repetitive spike discharges. The shortest initial latencies are consistent with monosynaptic excitation from the olfactory nerves; longer latencies may reflect longer nerve pathways or polysynaptic connexions in the glomerular layer. 3. Like mitral and tufted cells, some glomerular layer units gave evidence of activation by discrete nerve bundles. T

Auricular acupuncture and vagal regulation.

Auricular acupuncture has been utilized in the treatment of diseases for thousands of years. Dr. Paul Nogier firstly originated the concept of an inverted fetus map on the external ear. In the present study, the relationship between the auricular acupuncture and the vagal regulation has been reviewed. It has been shown that auricular acupuncture plays a role in vagal activity of autonomic functions of cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems. Mechanism studies suggested that afferent projections from especially the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (ABVN) to the nucleus of t

Mediodorsal thalamic nucleus receives a direct retinal input in marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus): a subunit B cholera toxin study.

The mediodorsal thalamic nucleus is a prominent nucleus in the thalamus, positioned lateral to the midline nuclei and medial to the intralaminar thalamic complex in the dorsal thalamus. Several studies identify the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus as a key structure in learning and memory, as well as in emotional mechanisms and alertness due to reciprocal connections with the limbic system and prefrontal cortex. Fibers from the retina to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus have recently been described for the first time in a crepuscular rodent, suggesting a possible regulation of the mediodorsal thal

NTS Neural Subtypes and Satiety Pathways: taVNS as a Novel Neuromodulatory Intervention.

The global obesity epidemic has become one of the most severe public health challenges of the 21st century, and existing treatment strategies have limitations such as poor long-term adherence, significant side effects, or high invasiveness. Dysregulation of feeding behavior is the core driver of obesity, and its precise regulation depends on the complete transmission of gut-brain axis signals. The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), as the first central relay station for visceral afferent signals, is a key hub for the regulation of feeding homeostasis. This article reviews the peripheral sign

Influence of falling height on the excitability of the soleus H-reflex during drop-jumps.

AIM: The stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) is characterized by stretching of the target muscle (eccentric phase) prior to a subsequent shortening in the concentric phase. Stretch reflexes in the eccentric phase were argued to influence the performance of short lasting SSCs. In drop-jumps, the short latency component of the stretch reflex (SLR) was shown to increase with falling height. However, in jumps from excessive heights, the SLR was diminished. So far, it is unclear whether the modulation of the SLR relies on spinal mechanisms or on an altered fusimotor drive. The present study aimed to ass

Disynaptic and polysynaptic statocyst pathways to an identified set of premotor nonspiking interneurons in the crayfish brain.

Nonspiking giant interneurons (NGIs) in the crayfish brain occupy a key position in the neuronal circuit for eyestalk motor control and, hence, play a crucial role in the central compensation process following unilateral deprivation of the statocyst that functions as an equilibrium sensory system. The synaptic organization of their input pathways, however, remains unknown. In the present study we identified 11 local interneurons that were polysynaptically connected to NGIs by making simultaneous intracellular recordings. We also identified three other local interneurons that connected to NGIs

Neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations of multiple sclerosis other than acute optic neuritis.

Acute optic neuritis is the most common neuro-opthalmologic manifestation of multiple sclerosis (MS). Treatment with high-dose intravenous corticosteroids accelerates visual recovery, although it has no long-term visual benefit. MS has several others, less common, neuro-ophthalmological manifestations, where corticotherapy may not be the best treatment option. Neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations of MS other than optic neuritis can be divided in afferent and efferent visual pathways, acute and chronic and may be associated with drugs that are employed in MS. The authors propose is to review the

[Importance of the stapedial reflex in the diagnosis of several pathologies].

The stapedius muscle plays an important role in auditory physiology. Its function may be assessed using a test named impedancemetry, where its reflex is measured. For the stapedial reflex to function, it is necessary that the middle ear and the afferent and efferent pathways are intact. Several pathologies of the middle and internal ear, as well as other otoneurological disorders and systemic illnesses, may change the physiology of the stapedius muscle. This review has incorporated various bibliographic sources with the objective to show the modifications of the stapedial reflex in several typ

Syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) and Gerhardt syndrome associated with Shy-Drager syndrome.

This is the first report on a case of syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) associated with Gerhardt syndrome … sopressin secretion was not suppressed by plasma osmolality below 280 mOsm/kgH2O. Impairment of the afferent pathways of baroreceptors, or impairment of the osmoreceptors could be speculated as the etiological factor of the SIADH observed in this case.

Parasympathetic reflex vasodilatation in rat submandibular gland.

The present study was designed to investigate 1) whether parasympathetic reflex vasodilatation occurs in the submandibular gland (SMG) in deeply urethan-anesthetized, cervically vagotomized, and sympathectomized rats when the central cut end of the lingual nerve (LN) is electrically stimulated and 2) to what extent the neural mechanisms underlying such responses are the same as those involved in the response to direct stimulation of the chorda-LN (CLN). Stimulation of each nerve separately elicited a marked blood flow increase in SMG. Section of the chorda tympani abolished the SMG blood flow
