The ADHD advantage: Comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is associated with earlier diagnosis and better academic outcomes in children with specific language disorder.

Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in reading, writing, and mathematics despite normal intelligence. One of the most common comorbidity of SLD is attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, differences between patients with SLD alone and SLD with ADHD remain underinvestigated. This study aims to compare clinical and psychosocial characteristics between these two groups. This retrospective study analyzes pediatric psychiatric patient data from Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) at the Learning Disorder Outpatient

Functional network topology of the right insula affects emotion dysregulation in hyperactive-impulsive attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Emotion dysregulation is common in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is highly prevalent in young adult ADHD and related to reduced well-being and social impairments. Neuroimaging studies reported neural activity changes in ADHD in brain regions associated with emotion processing and regulation. It is however unknown whether deficits in emotion regulation relate to changes in functional brain network topology in these regions. We used a combination of graph analysis and structural equation modelling (SEM) to analyze resting-state functional connectivity in 147 well-characteri

Brexpiprazole Treatment in a Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Trauma-Associated Hoarding Symptoms: A Case Report.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently present with multiple psychiatric comorbidities, often accompanied by severe emotional dysregulation and behavioral disturbances that complicate diagnosis and treatment. We describe a child with comorbid ASD and ADHD who also met diagnostic criteria for hoarding disorder and separation anxiety disorder and exhibited trauma-related symptoms. The patient showed minimal response to psychotherapy and conventional pharmacological interventions. Although comprehensive multidisciplinary support

Assessment of Sleep Habit and Oral Habits in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Cross-sectional Study.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: A healthy metabolic, cognitive, and physical wellness requires sleep. Children with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are prone to sleep disturbances, which exacerbates the behavioral and cognitive issues. Likewise, the sleep problems co-occur with oral habits. This study aims to assess and compare the sleep habit and oral habits of children with ASD and ADHD with those of neurotypical children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 96 children between the ages 4 and 10 were included. They

Atomoxetine Treatment of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms in 3-6-Year-Old Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Atomoxetine is indicated for the management of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years. Few studies have assessed the safety and tolerability of atomoxetine in younger patients. This retrospective cohort study included 133 children aged 3-6 years who were diagnosed with ADHD comorbid with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The primary endpoint was the evaluation of the safety profile of atomoxetine. In total, 50 patients (37.6%) experienced adverse events (AEs), which led to treatment discontinuation in 23 patients (17.3%). The most common AE

The risk of autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability but not attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is increased in individuals with esophageal atresia.

Knowledge of neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID) in patients with esophageal atresia (EA) is scarce. The aims of this study were to investigate the prevalence and risk of ADHD, ASD and ID in individuals with EA. Data were obtained from four longitudinal population-based registries in Sweden and analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression. Patients with EA born in Sweden in 1973-2018 were included together with five controls for each individual with the exposure matched on s

Impulsive Personality Traits Mediate the Relationship Between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms and Psychiatric Comorbidity among Patients with Severe Alcohol Use Disorder.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an established risk factor for developing alcohol use disorder (AUD), and AUD-ADHD comorbidity is associated with additional psychiatric diagnoses. Several lines of evidence support the role of impulsivity as a pathway of these relationships; however, impulsivity is not a unitary construct. Thus, we sought to explore whether separate aspects of impulsivity may explain the relationship between ADHD symptoms and psychiatric comorbidity among inpatients (N = 136) with AUD. Methods: We assessed ADHD symptoms (childhood ADHD [Wender Utah Rating Sca

Polygenic risk for autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and neuroticism is associated with the experience of childhood abuse.

People who experience childhood abuse are at increased risk of mental illness. Twin studies suggest that inherited genetic risk for mental illness may account for some of these associations. Yet, the hypothesis that individuals who have experienced childhood abuse may carry genetic loading for mental illness has never been tested with genetic data. Using polygenic risk scores for six psychiatric disorders-attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), bipolar disorder (BPD), major depressive disorder (MDD), neuroticism, and schizophrenia-we tested whether gene

Systematic Review of Environmental and Psychosocial Risk Factors associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Conduct Disorder in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: In the majority of cases, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is accompanied by one or more comorbid disorders, with the oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) being one of the most frequently diagnosed comorbid disorders. There is a lack of systematic reviews addressing the evidence for an association between the independent environmental and psychosocial risk factors associated with ADHD, ODD, and Conduct Disorder (CD). OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the link between ADHD and ODD/CD, specifically in terms of the most up-to-date environmental and psychosocial ri

Inhibitory Control Deficits in Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder Compared to Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Inhibitory control deficits are known to be characteristic of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Disorder (CD), and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); but it is unclear whether children with ODD/CD have inhibitory control problems independent of ADHD comorbidity. Previous reviews of inhibitory control and ODD/CD have only focused on one type of measure of inhibitory control or used non-clinical samples. The current meta-analysis explored inhibitory control problems of children with ODD/CD by systematically reviewing studies where children have a diagnosis of ODD and/or

Traffic-related air pollution links with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Denmark: Developmental periods of susceptibility and sex-specificity.

Literature supports that higher early life exposure to air pollution arising from combustion, e.g., traffic exhaust and electric power generation, is associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, little is known about whether certain periods of exposure during fetal or childhood brain development are more important, i.e. whether there are critical windows of exposure, or whether associations differ by child sex. To address these gaps, we performed a population-based case-cohort study including singletons born 1981-2008 using Danish national registry data resources.
