[Acquiring a sexual identity].

Progressive acquisition from childhood onwards to adulthood of a procreative and psycho-emotional sexual identity is presented in all its bio-psycho-social complexity. Gender identity disorders (GDI) and the different sexual orientations (hetero-, homo- or bisexual) are included with their possible etiologies. Different medico-psycho-social programs and projects are presented targeting persons having difficulties in this developmental process of their identity.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura associated with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

A bisexual male presented with acute thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) in association with established acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The patient had classic clinical and laboratory findings of TTP and responded well to plasmapheresis therapy. Previously reported cases of TTP in association with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are briefly reviewed. Basic concepts in the pathogenesis of TTP are examined in reference to HIV infection.

Fatal cryptosporidiosis complicating Kaposi's sarcoma in an immunocompromised man.

Fatal cryptosporidiosis in a bisexual immunosuppressed man with disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma and intractable diarrhea is described. Cryptosporidium sp. was isolated from the stool antemortem by Sheather's floation technique. This parasite should be considered in immunosuppressed hosts with chronic diarrhea when routine methods fail to demonstrate etiologic agent. Since this organism is already infectious when passed, stool precautions should be maintained.

Mediated Urgency: Exploring GBTQ+ Perceptions of Antibiotic-Resistant Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Often, research takes place once a health issue is already at 'crisis' point. However, health professionals and populations can have different understandings of 'urgency'. At present, health authorities, scientists and other medical professionals are increasingly concerned about escalating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the context of STIs. Clinicians worry about Neisseria gonorrhoeae becoming progressively resistant to last-line treatment, as well as the very limited treatment options for resistant Mycoplasma genitalium. This paper explores how states of 'urgency' and 'crisis' are socially

Examining the differential protective effects of women's spirituality and religiosity on alcohol and marijuana use by sexual identity.

The current study explored how religiosity and spirituality may differentially influence substance use by sexual identity based on a sample of adult sexual minority women (SMW; n = 437 lesbian; n = 323 bisexual) relative to a heterosexual comparison sample (n = 636). We examined three questions: (1) whether spirituality was differentially associated with alcohol and marijuana use by sexual identity; (2) whether religiosity was differentially associated with alcohol and marijuana use by sexual identity; (3) whether observed differences between spirituality or religiosity and substance use by se

Sexual identity and orientation in adult men and women with spina bifida.

PURPOSE: Sexuality has received little attention in spina bifida (SB) care. The aim of this study was to assess sexual identity and orientation in adults with SB. METHODS: An international online survey to adults with SB was administered over 10-months (recruitment: SB clinics, SB organizations via social media). Collected data included demographics, sexual identity and orientation. Non-parametric tests were used for analysis. RESULTS: Median age of 77 men and 119 women was 35 years old (52.0% shunted, 48.5% community ambulators, 42.3% outside United States). Most commonly, men identified as

Transactional sex among men and women in the south at high risk for HIV and other STIs.

Transactional sex refers to selling sex (exchanging sex for money, drugs, food, shelter, or other items) or purchasing sex (exchanging money, drugs, food, shelter, or other items for sex). These activities have been associated with a higher risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in a variety of populations and settings. This paper examines correlates of purchasing and selling sex in a large sample of drug users, men who have sex with men, and sex partners of these groups. Using respondent-driven sampling, participants were recruited between 2005 and 2008 in two urban and two ru

Birth order and ratio of brothers to sisters in transsexuals.

BACKGROUND: As previous studies with homosexual males have revealed a later birth order, more older brothers and more brothers than sisters, this research was extended to a large series of transsexual males and females, some of whom are homosexual. METHODS: The male sample comprised 442 male-to-female transsexuals, subdivided by sexual partner preference: 106 homosexual, 135 heterosexual, 155 bisexual and 46 asexual. One hundred female-to-male transsexuals were also studied: 75 homosexual, 16 bisexual, seven heterosexual and five asexual. Birth order was computed by both Slater's Index and Be

Risk factors for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in patients at a sexually transmitted disease clinic in New York City.

Patients who attended a sexually transmitted disease clinic in New York City in 1987 were offered enrollment in a nonblinded study to estimate human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) seroprevalence in adults with multiple sexual partners and to determine risk factors associated with HIV-1 infection. In addition, a blinded serosurvey of a representative sample of patients was performed to obtain an unbiased estimate of seroprevalence in clinic attendees. The seroprevalence in the blinded serosurvey was 7.5% (26/348), while the seroprevalence of the 1,201 volunteers for the nonblinded study

Neurological complications of human immunodeficiency virus infection in patients with lymphadenopathy syndrome.

To determine if there is a relationship between neurological abnormalities and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients with lymphadenopathy syndrome (LAS), we studied 39 homosexual/bisexual men with LAS (mean duration of LAS, 4.1 years) and 38 homosexual/bisexual men who were seronegative for HIV (controls). Six LAS patients had histories of symptoms suggesting mononeuropathy, 9 had symptoms suggesting distal symmetrical polyneuropathy, and 9 had histories of herpes zoster radiculitis. Overall, significantly more LAS patients (18) than controls (3) had histories of symptoms or

Social and sexual networks of newly diagnosed people living with HIV: a qualitative social network analysis.

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of HIV transmission dynamics is needed to further reduce the number of new HIV diagnoses in Belgium. As environmental and social context play an important role in explaining HIV acquisition despite the availability of effective HIV prevention, this study investigated how social and sexual networks may have influenced HIV prevention and risk behavior among a group of people newly diagnosed with HIV, including their perceptions of how they acquired HIV and their ability to disclose their HIV status. METHODS: We used an ego-centric social network approach, gene

Self-reported masking in sexual minority and heterosexual autistic adults.

Masking can include suppressing or concealing certain behaviors to appear "non-autistic" and is one response to the excess social stressors of being a neurominority in a neurotypical-majority society. It is important to understand how persons who are multiply marginalized (e.g. an autistic person assigned female sex at birth who is bisexual), who experience multiple layers of excess social stressors, may face additional pressures to conceal their authentic selves. Autistic persons may be more likely than neurotypical persons to identify with a sexual minority orientation, such as asexual, bise

Sexual orientation disparities in gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority (SM) individuals (e.g., those with same-sex attractions/partners or who identify as lesbian/gay/bisexual) experience a host of physical and mental health disparities. However, little is known about sexual orientation-related disparities in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP; gestational hypertension [gHTN] and preeclampsia). OBJECTIVE: To estimate disparities in GDM, gHTN and preeclampsia by sexual orientation. METHODS: We used data from the Nurses' Health Study II-a cohort of nurses across the US enrolled in 1989 at 2

The rain feels different under the same umbrella: Experiences with poverty across LGBTQ subgroups.

Population-based survey data have demonstrated that LGBTQ communities report varying rates of economic insecurity, yet very little research directly assesses how pathways into and experiences with poverty look different among subgroups at the intersections of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). This qualitative study applies constructivist grounded theory analysis to examine the lived experiences of 92 low-income LGBTQ adults. While shared experiences were evident, the analysis highlights issues notably salient to specific SOGI subgroups. Distinct themes underscore the following exp

The City Clinic Cohort Study: Hepatitis B, HTLV-III/LAV, and CDC AIDS Project 24.

Anticipating the availability of a safe vaccine, scientists at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) planned for a multicenter study of the prevalence, incidence, and efficacy of an experimental vaccine for hepatitis B in 1977, conducted the study among homosexual male volunteers in five collaborating sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics in the United States from April 1978 through 1980, and concluded that the candidate vaccine was highly efficacious in preventing infections with the hepatitis B virus. Then something completely unexpected and portentous happened. Some successfully vacci

Self-sampling monkeypox virus testing in high-risk populations, asymptomatic or with unrecognized Mpox, in Spain.

The recent monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreak was of global concern and has mainly affected gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Here we assess prevalence of MPXV in high-risk populations of GBMSM, trans women (TW) and non-binary people without symptoms or with unrecognized monkeypox (Mpox) symptoms, using a self-sampling strategy. Anal and pharyngeal swabs are tested by MPXV real-time PCR and positive samples are tested for cytopathic effect (CPE) in cell culture. 113 individuals participated in the study, 89 (78.76%) were cis men, 17 (15.04%) were TW. The median age was 35

Relationships between Sexual Orientation, Weight, and Health in a Population-Based Sample of California Women.

BACKGROUND: Most biomedical research has reported associations between weight and physical health problems; little is known about whether those associations vary by sexual identity. METHODS: Pooled data from the 2003 through 2013 waves of the California Health Interview Survey was used to construct logistic regression models to examine whether the associations between weight and four chronic conditions (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and asthma) varied by sexual identity. RESULTS: A total of 97,720 heterosexual and 2,822 lesbian/bisexual women comprised the analytic sample. Th

Grindr, Scruff, and on the Hunt: Predictors of Condomless Anal Sex, Internet Use, and Mobile Application Use Among Men Who Have Sex With Men.

In 2016, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) comprise more than half of all new HIV diagnoses in the United States, with the primary mode of infection being condomless anal sex (CAS). While studies report an association between use of Internet-based social networking sites and increased CAS, the research on the relationship between cell phone mobile applications (e.g., Grindr, Scruff, Jack'd) and CAS is much less developed. The present study examines whether the manner in which gay, bisexual, and other MSM find sexual partners predicts an increase in likelihood of engaging
