Halogen-Bonding-Steered Thermal Reassembly into Brickwork Packing Motifs Enhances Electron Transport in Naphthalenediimides.

Electron transport in organic semiconductor solids with high carrier mobility is crucial for the realization of high-performance organic electronic devices. In molecular semiconductors, self-assembly pathways and the resulting supramolecular superstructures play a decisive role in dictating the molecular packing, which in turn governs charge-transport efficiency. Therefore, weak noncovalent interactions must be carefully engineered to fine-tune molecular stacking motifs. Herein, we investigate the role of halogen-bonded intermolecular interactions in directing naphthalenediimide (NDI) stacks t

Fusion Strategy Toward Highly Crystalline Non-Fullerene Acceptor Enables Simultaneously Enhanced Current and Voltage in Organic Solar Cells.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) offer unique advantages, yet their photovoltaic performance is limited by the challenge of optimizing molecular packing in photoactive materials. While A-D-A'-D-A-type acceptors have improved efficiency by forming favorable 3D network packing, strategies to further enhance crystallinity without causing detrimental over-aggregation are scarce. Herein, we report a distinctive non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) congener, BrTh-2Cl, via a molecular fusion strategy. This design ingeniously integrates a highly crystalline brominated-thiophene unit with a chlorinated phenyl group

Oxygen-associated differentiation of TBBPA-transforming activated sludge consortia and characterization of a cultivable Klebsiella degrader.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a widely used brominated flame retardant, poses increasing environmental and health concerns, yet how oxygen availability is associated with the assembly and degradation potential of TBBPA-transforming microbiomes remains poorly resolved. Here, ten enrichment consortia (six aerobic and four anaerobic) were established from activated sludge collected at six municipal wastewater treatment plants, achieving up to 63.46% TBBPA removal at an initial concentration of 5 mg/L. Metagenomic analysis revealed marked community divergence between the aerobic and anaerobic enr

Physical and chemical variables as proxies for THM formation in wastewater disinfection in a Brazilian treatment plant.

Chlorination is a widely used disinfection method in Brazil's wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) due to its cost-effectiveness. However, the formation of DBPs, such as trihalomethanes (THMs), indicates risks to human health and the environment, especially in middle- and low-income countries where DBP monitoring remains limited. To streamline monitoring, we aim to investigate how physical and chemical variables influence THM formation in sewage at a university in Brazil through regression model analysis. Raw wastewater was filtered, diluted into four proportions, and chlorinated using four hyp

The single and combined effects of decabromodiphenyl ethane and mixed microplastics on male mice reproductive toxicity†.

The expansive surface area of microplastics (MPs) allows them to retain pollutants; however, the combined toxicity of mixed MPs and organic contaminants remains poorly studied. The semen quality of men worldwide was observed to exhibit downward trends. This study investigates the reproductive toxicity and underlying mechanisms of male mice exposed to MPs and a novel brominated flame retardant, decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), individually or combined. Male mice were treated by oral gavage with corn oil, 5 or 50 mg/kg DBDPE, 10 mg/kg MPs [a mixture of PE (polyethylene) and PVC (polyvinyl chlor

Design and synthesis of sulfur-containing pseudilin analogs and their biological activity evaluation.

Pseudilin is a natural product that inhibits the enzyme 4-diphosphocytidyl-2C-methyl-D-erythritol synthase (IspD) in the methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway, and using it as a template for designing lead structure is an effective strategy in developing new active compounds. In this work, a series of sulfur-containing pseudilin analogs were designed by replacing the pyrrole rings in pseudilin with pyrazole rings through bioisosteric replacement strategy, while introducing sulfur-containing groups. The target compounds were synthesized through a four-step reaction sequence, in which the key

Identification and Structural Elucidation of a New Synthetic Cannabinoid, MDMB-5'Br-PINACA, in Seized Herbal Materials.

Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) remain the most frequently detected class of new psychoactive substances (NPS) worldwide. Despite a recent decline in the overall number of newly reported NPS, SCs continue to emerge with remarkable structural diversity. Here, we report the discovery and structural elucidation of MDMB-5'Br-PINACA, a previously unreported SC identified in three seized herbal materials. The compound was isolated by semipreparative liquid chromatography and subsequently characterized using an integrated analytical approach combining gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid

Uncovering parental exposure risks of TCPP: Impaired development and metabolic homeostasis in zebrafish offspring.

As brominated flame retardants are phased out, tris (1‑chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), a phosphorus-based flame retardant, has emerged as a prominent detectable flame retardant in the environment. However, TCPP has been found to exhibit endocrine-disrupting effects on organisms, raising significant safety concerns. In our study, we utilized the zebrafish model to explore the toxic effects of parental TCPP exposure on offspring and uncover its regulatory mechanisms through metabolomics analysis. Moreover, the impact on the nervous system and lipid metabolism was examined through behavioral a

A comparative study on the effectiveness of pollutants control measures adopted in the steel industry to reduce workplace and environmental exposure: a case study.

Our understanding of the environmental and occupational health implications of pollutants emitted in steel production is still lacking, despite the considerable amount of research devoted to this topic. Given the significance of steel recycling and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, many steel factories are adopting electric arc furnace (EAF) technology. The use of a technological system designed for the capture of pollutants emitted through EAF steel production is highly ecological because of its utilization of iron scrap and low investment cost. Despite this, the main issue with th

First insight into the environmental fate of N-acetylated sulfonamides from wastewater disinfection to solar-irradiated receiving waters.

The worldwide detection of emerging transformation products of organic micropollutants has raised accumulating concerns owing to their unknown environmental fate and undesired toxicity. This work first explored the reaction kinetics and mechanisms of the prevalent N-acetylated sulfonamides (N4-AcSAs, the typical sulfonamide metabolites) from wastewater disinfection to solar-irradiated receiving waters. The transformation scenarios included chlorination/bromination, photodegradation, and solar/chlorine treatment. The halogenations of two N4-AcSAs (N4-acetylated sulfadiazine, N4-AcSDZ; N4-acetyl

Astaxanthin reduces TBPH-induced neurobehavioral deficits in mice by the ROS-ERK1/2-FOS pathway.

The persistence of the novel brominated flame retardant, bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrabromophthalate (TBPH), in the environment and its potential for bioaccumulation in living organisms, including humans, further exacerbate its health risks. Therefore, ongoing research is crucial for fully understanding the extent of TBPH's neurotoxicity and for developing effective mitigation strategies. This study aims to investigate the potential neurotoxicity of TBPH on mouse neurobehavior and to evaluate the protective effects of the natural antioxidant astaxanthin (AST) against TBPH-induced neurotoxici

Prioritization of chemical food safety hazards in the European feed supply chain.

Extensive monitoring programs of chemical hazards in the animal feed chain are in place, both organized by public and private organizations. The objective of this review was to prioritize chemical hazards for monitoring in the European animal feed supply chain. A step-wise approach was designed for the prioritization, based on: historical occurrence of the chemicals in animal feed ingredients and animal feeds (in relation to European guidance values or maximum limits in feed); information on transfer of the chemical to edible animal products, and; the extent of human dietary intake of the prod

Oxidation of 1,3-diphenylguanidine (DPG) by goethite activated persulfate: Mechanisms, products identification and reaction sites prediction.

As emerging pollutants continue to be discovered, studies on the degradation behavior of emerging pollutants have proliferated, but few studies have focused on the reactivity of the new pollutants themselves. The work investigated the oxidation of a representative roadway runoff-derived organic contaminant, 1,3-diphenylguanidine (DPG) by goethite activated persulfate (PS). DPG exhibited the highest degradation rate (kd = 0.42 h-1) with present of PS and goethite at pH 5.0, then started to decrease with increasing pH. Chloride ion inhibited DPG degradation by scavenging HO·. Both HO· and SO4-·

BDE209-promoted Dio2 degradation in H4 glioma cells through the autophagy pathway, resulting in hypothyroidism and leading to neurotoxicity.

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209), the homologue with the highest number of brominates in polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), is one of the most widespread environmental persistent organic pollutants (POPs) due to its mass production and extensive application in recent decades. BDE209 is neurotoxic, possibly related to its interference with the thyroid hormone (TH) system. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of BDE209-induced TH interference and neurobehavioral disorders remains unknown. Here, we explored how BDE209 manipulated the major enzyme, human type II iodothyronine deiodina

Oxidative stress and ferroptosis involved in 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate -induced hepatotoxicity in chicken.

Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) are increasingly being used in many industries since brominated flame retardants (BFRs) have been phase-out. However, OPFRs are associated with environmental pollution and animal health risks, especially in the farming industry. Nevertheless, no study has evaluated the toxicity of OPFRs, as a new flame retardant, on avian species. In order to investigate the specific toxic effects of 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPHP) exposure on chickens and the molecular biological mechanisms that cause damage to the organism, the chicken liver has been studied

Discovery of significant atmospheric emission of halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from secondary zinc smelting.

Chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) are emerging persistent organic pollutants. Current knowledge on the emissions of Cl/Br- PAHs is far insufficient for source control, much less on their formation mechanisms. In this field study, Cl/Br-PAHs formation mechanisms were proposed from the macro perspective of practical secondary metal smelting industries. We found secondary zinc smelting as a significant source of Cl/Br-PAHs (9553 ng/m3 in stack gas), exceeding concentrations from other metal smelting sources by 1-2 orders of magnitude. Cl/Br-PAH emission char
