Extraosseous mental nerve anatomy in fresh-frozen Vietnamese cadavers: anatomical considerations for vestibular incisions and trocar placement in transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy via the vestibular approach.

BACKGROUND: Transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy via the vestibular approach (TOETVA) provides excellent cosmetic outcomes but introduces specific anatomical challenges related to the mental nerve. Although the location of the mental foramen has been extensively studied, detailed information regarding the extraosseous course, branching pattern, and layer-based relationships of the mental nerve remains limited. This study aimed to characterize the extraosseous anatomy of the mental nerve in fresh-frozen Vietnamese cadavers and provide anatomical information relevant to vestibular incision plannin…

Accuracy of Digital Radiography and Cone Beam Computed Tomography in Assessing Filling Material Extrusion Using Micro-Computed Tomography as Gold Standard: A Study in Human Cadavers.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the accuracy of digital periapical radiography (DPR) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in detecting extruded filling material, using a human cadaver model. Micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) served as the gold standard. METHODS: A total of 27 single-rooted teeth embedded in cadaveric mandibular segments, obtained from a prior retreatment study, were included: 25 with confirmed apical extrusion of filling material on micro-CT and 2 without extrusion serving as negative controls. The segments were imaged using both DPR and CBCT. Two calibrated endodontist…

Assessment of the position of the distal portion of the ulna in lateral projection radiographs of the wrist: analysis of the influence of pronation-supination and flexion-extension on the pisoscaphoid and the ulnotriquetral distances: a cadaver study.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Accurate assessment of the distal radioulnar joint is of paramount importance for the detection of possible dislocation or subluxation. Using a cadaveric model, the authors attempted to establish a quantitative method that would allow identification of normal and abnormal distal radioulnar joint anatomy on well-positioned and rotated conventional radiographs. METHODS: Four cadaveric wrists, in which subsequent sectioning confirmed the absence of disease, and one cadaveric wrist with a circumscribed lesion of the triangular fibrocartilaginous complex were studied. Def…

Ultrasonographic evaluation of the distance between the flexor pollicis longus tendon and volar prominence of the plate as a function of volar plate positioning and pronator quadratus repair - A cadaver study.

Flexor tendon injury after volar plating of distal radius fractures is due to friction against the plate. To assess this risk, the distance between the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) and the volar prominence of the plate was measured with ultrasonography under various conditions: a standard plate fixed proximal or distal to the watershed line and a low-profile volar rim plate, with and without transection of the pronator quadratus (PQ). Distance from the FPL to the volar prominence of the plate decreased significantly when the PQ was cut and when a standard plate was placed distal to the watersh

Volar versus dorsal latest-generation variable-angle locking plates for the fixation of AO type 23C 2.1 distal radius fractures: a biomechanical study in cadavers.

INTRODUCTION: Anatomicaly preformed variable-angle locking plates are technologically mature and appear to be optimal for the fixation of distal radius fractures. However, there is still much argument about whether volar plating is equivalent to dorsal (buttressing) plating, especially in the management of intra-articular extension fractures. This biomechanical study was performed to determine, in a simple intra-articular fracture model, whether dorsal or volar plate constructs would be more stable. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six pairs of fresh frozen radii were examined with dual-energy absorpti

Retrograde intramedullary nails with distal screws locked to the nail have higher fatigue strength than locking plates in the treatment of supracondylar femoral fractures: A cadaver-based laboratory investigation.

We investigated a new intramedullary locking nail that allows the distal interlocking screws to be locked to the nail. We compared fixation using this new implant with fixation using either a conventional nail or a locking plate in a laboratory simulation of an osteoporotic fracture of the distal femur. A total of 15 human cadaver femora were used to simulate an AO 33-A3 fracture pattern. Paired specimens compared fixation using either a locking or non-locking retrograde nail, and using either a locking retrograde nail or a locking plate. The constructs underwent cyclical loading to simulate s…

Bilateral spontaneous tenodesis of the long head of the biceps at the bicipital groove with massive rotator cuff tear on a 103-year-old female cadaver: the natural evolution of the human shoulder?

During a dissection on a 103-year-old female cadaver, a bilateral spontaneous tenodesis of the long head of the biceps (LHB) with massive rotator cuff tear was discovered at the bicipital groove. Neer et al. have introduced the term of cuff-tear arthropathy to define severe disorganization of the glenohumeral joint with collapse of the humeral head that occurs following some massive tears of the rotator cuff, and we found this aspect during our dissection. The tendon of the LHB is a well-known source of shoulder pain, and the majority of degenerative changes in the LHB are associated with path…

Neuropathology of iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and immunoassay of French cadaver-sourced growth hormone batches suggest possible transmission of tauopathy and long incubation periods for the transmission of Abeta pathology.

Abeta deposits and tau pathology were investigated in 24 French patients that died from iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease after exposure to cadaver-derived human growth hormone (c-hGH) in the 1980s. Abeta deposits were found only in one case that had experienced one of the longest incubation periods. Three cases had also intracellular tau accumulation. The analysis of 24 batches of c-hGH, produced between 1974 and 1988, demonstrated for the first time the presence of Abeta and tau contaminants in c-hGH (in 17 and 6 batches, respectively). The incubation of prion disease was shorter in the F…

Anatomical feasibility of performing a nerve transfer from the femoral branch to bilateral pelvic nerves in a cadaver: a potential method to restore bladder function following proximal spinal cord injury.

OBJECT: Nerve transfers are an effective means of restoring control to paralyzed somatic muscle groups and have recently been shown to be effective in denervated detrusor muscle in a canine model. A cadaveric study was performed to examine the anatomical feasibility of transferring femoral muscular nerve branches to vesical branches of the pelvic nerve as a method of potentially restoring innervation to control the detrusor muscle in humans. METHODS: Twenty cadavers were dissected bilaterally to expose pelvic and femoral muscular nerve branches. Ease of access and ability to transfer the nerv…

Biomechanical analysis of cadaver rabbit Achilles tendons after full transection and suture: Comparison of U-Tang 4-strand with the cross-locked version of U-Tang 4-strand suture technique.

INTRODUCTION: Tendon injures rank as the second most common hand injuries, and unsatisfactory repair can significantly impact a patient's everyday life. Over the years, various suture techniques have been studied in the pursuit of finding the optimal repair method. The ideal tendon repair should achieve maximum strength, while being easy to perform and minimizing tissue trauma. This study aims to compare the mechanical properties of the cross-locked U-Tang 4-strand suture to its unmodified version, the U-Tang 4-strand suture, to assess which technique offers greater repair strength. METHODS:

Xenon-Enhanced Dynamic Dual-Energy CT Is Able to Quantify Sinus Ventilation Using Laminar and Pulsating Air-/Gas Flow Before and After Surgery: A Pilot Study in a Cadaver Model.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis is a common disease with a significant impact on the quality of life. Topical drug delivery to the paranasal sinuses is not efficient to prevent sinus surgery or expensive biologic treatment in a lot of cases as the affected mucosa is not reached. More efficient approaches for topical drug delivery are, therefore, necessary. In the current study, dual-energy CT (DECT) imaging was used to examine sinus ventilation before and after sinus surgery using a pulsating xenon gas ventilator in a cadaver head. METHODS: Xenon gas was administered to the nasal cavity of…
