PURPOSE: To report the surgical outcome of "sealing the gap" in treating symblepharon caused by various etiologies other than recurrent pterygium.
DESIGN: Retrospective, interventional case series.
METHODS: Sixteen eyes of 14 patients with pathogenic symblepharon were consecutively operated by conjunctival recession, sealing the gap between recessed conjunctiva and Tenon capsule with a running 9-0 nylon suture, and covering of the bare sclera with amniotic membrane. Cryptococcosis is an opportunistic yeast infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans that remains the most common systemic fungal infection in immunosuppressed patients and often presents with signs of meningitis. Primary cutaneous cryptococcosis (PCC) is a more rare clinical identity that is characterized by skin lesions confined to 1 body region, often presenting as a whitlow or phlegmon with positive culture for C neoformans and no evidence of simultaneous dissemination. We report a rare case of PCC in a 73-year-old man with intact cell-mediated immunity.

CONTEXT: Patients with pheochromocytoma (PH) or paraganglioma (PGL) may suffer from tumor persistence or recurrence after resection of the primary tumor. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Corbrin Shugan capsule on dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced hepatic fibrosis in rats.
METHODS: Hepatic fibrosis was induced by DMN in AD rats. The serum concentrations of III pro-collagen (III PC),laminin (LN) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1(TIMP-1) were determined with ELISA. The concentration of albumin (ALB) in sera and the content of hydroxyproline (Hyp) in liver tissues were determined with chemical colorimetric and HPLC, respectively. Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is a safe innovative tool for investigating obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, Crohn's disease and other small bowel pathologies. The clinical data and capsule endoscopy image of 16 adult patients with small intestine ascariasis were reviewed and analyzed retrospectively from June 2006 to June 2012 in West China Hospital. Among the 16 patients, 15 cases manifested as gastrointestinal bleeding, 15 cases showed anemia (3 severe, 10 moderate, and 2 mild), 2 had hypoalbuminemia, 1 had peripheral blood eosinophilia. UNLABELLED: We report ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) evaluation of a paintball-related traumatic cataract with a posterior capsule tear. Slitlamp examination revealed anterior and posterior subcapsular cataracts with a suspicious tiny posterior capsule tear within the larger area of posterior bulging. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (35 MHz) confirmed the presence of a sub-1.0 mm posterior capsule tear, which was clearly observed intraoperatively and postoperatively. This is the first report illustrating the high performance of 35 MHz UBM in detecting a sub-1.0 mm posterior capsule tear.
