The first report of Dactylogyrus formosus Kulwiec, 1927 (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) from goldfish (Carassius auratus) in central China.

Dactylogyrus formosus Kulwiec, 1927 (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae), widely distributed across Eurasia, is considered as one of the most frequently encountered ectoparasites of goldfish (Carassius auratus). In the present study, D. formosus on gills of cultured goldfish was reported in central China for the first time, using the methods of morphological characters and molecular markers. It was characterized by "Anchoratoid-Wegeneri" type anchor with elongate inner and unobvious outer root. The morphology of the opisthaptoral hard parts of D. formosus superficially resembles species of D. arcuatus

The pathogenic potential of autoreactive antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease affecting ∼1 % of the population. Although major advances have been made in the treatment of RA, relatively little is known about disease pathogenesis. Autoantibodies, present in approximately 60 % of the patients with early disease, might provide indications for immunological mechanisms underlying RA. Among the RA-associated autoantibodies, especially anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs) have been studied intensively in the last decade. The discovery of ACPAs resulted into novel insight in RA pathogenesis and allowed division of the

The megalocytivirus-induced protein CsMig1 enhances Cynoglossus semilaevis resistance against viral infection.

Half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) is an important economic fish species cultured in northern China. In this study, we identified and analyzed the expression and function of a megalocytivirus-induced gene, CsMig1, from tongue sole. The deduced amino acid sequence of CsMig1 is composed of 507 residues and contains no conserved domains. Blast analysis identified no close homologues of CsMig1. CsMig1 shares moderate sequence similarities in the N-terminal region with the Gig1 (i.e., grass carp hemorrhagic virus-induced gene) homologues of several teleost species. Quantitative real t

Studies on the nutrition of marine flatfish. The thiamin requirement of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus).

1. Seven groups of young turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) were given diets containing graded levels of thiamin (0-19--50 mg/kg) for 16 weeks and their growth rate was measured during this period. 2. Good growth was obtained on all these treatments except in the group given the lowest dietary thiamin level (0-19 mg/kg). These fish grew normally until the 12th week but thereafter their weight did not increase. 3. Measurements of erythrocyte transketolase (sedoheptulose-7-phosphate: D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate glycolaldehydetransferase; EC 2.2.1.1) activity at the end of the experiment and of perce

[Herbalogical study on historical evolution of collection, processing and efficacy of Citri Exocarpium Rubrum and Citri Grandis Exocarpium].

In ancient times, the original plants of Citri Exocarpium Rubrum and Citri Grandis Exocarpium had experienced succession and change, including tangerine(Citrus reticulata), pomelo(C. grandis), and Huazhou pomelo(C. grandis 'Tomentosa'), a specific cultivar of C. grandis produced in Huazhou, Guangdong. Before the Qing Dynasty, tangerine was the main original plant, while Huazhou pomelo came to the fore in the Qing Dynasty. In the 1950 s and 1960 s, the producing area of Huazhou pomelo was destroyed, and thus it had to be supplemented with pomelo. From then on, C. grandis 'Tomentosa' and C. gran

First ultrastructural and cytochemical data on the spermatozoon and its differentiation in progenetic and adult Archigetes sieboldi Leuckart, 1878 (Cestoda, Caryophyllidea, Caryophyllaeidae).

Spermiogenesis in progenetic and adult stages of Archigetes sieboldi Leuckart, 1878, a tapeworm parasitic in oligochaetes and fish respectively, has been examined using transmission electron microscopy and cytochemical staining for glycogen. General pattern of spermiogenesis is essentially like that of other caryophyllideans, i.e., apical dense material in the zone of differentiation in the early stages of spermiogenesis, rotation of free flagellum and a flagellar bud, and proximo-distal fusion. Interestingly, rotation of a free flagellum and flagellar bud to the median cytoplasmic process (MC

Increased acute toxicity to fish caused by pharmaceuticals in hospital effluents in a pharmaceutical mixture and after solar irradiation.

Hospital effluents are an important source of residual drugs and other classes of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments. The raw wastewater from the studied hospital exhibited acute toxicity to vertebrate organisms, and Cyprinus carpio was the most sensitive organism tested. A mixture of 19 commonly used pharmaceuticals caused acute toxicity to C. carpio with an LC50 value of 60.68mgL(-1) after 96h. This study demonstrated that irradiation for 1-5days significantly increased the acute toxicity of the pharmaceuticals to fish, leading to increased mortality after a 2-h exposure and approximate

Ethambutol alters spinule-type synaptic connections and induces morphologic alterations in the cone pedicles of the fish retina.

PURPOSE: Ethambutol can cause optic neuropathy and deficiencies in color-opponent visual processing in patients treated for tuberculosis. In fish, Ethambutol induces color vision deficiencies similar to those observed in humans and affects color coding in retinal ganglion cells. Color opponency in fish is mainly mediated by a horizontal cell feedback onto cones thought to be provided by spinules. The authors examined whether Ethambutol affects spinules and is, therefore, able to alter color processing at a distal stage, that is, at the first synaptic connection within the retina. METHODS: Eth

Melanin concentrating hormone. I. Influence of nerves and hormones on the control of trout melanophores.

When melanophores on trout scales are cultured in vitro they show a transitory melanin concentration, which can be prevented by addition to the medium of the alpha adrenergic blocker, phentolamine. This indicates the release of endogenous nor-epinephrine from local nerve terminals. This initial phase of melanin aggregation is followed by redispersion and then by a second, more gradual melanin concentration over several days, which is not antagonized by phentolamine. A final melanophore index of between 2-2.5 is attained which may be the resting state of trout melanophores. Using short-term cul

Correlation of the level of beta-citryl-L-glutamic acid with spermatogenesis in rat testes.

beta-Citryl-L-glutamic acid, which is known to be highly concentrated in the brains of immature animals, is preferentially localized in the testes of various adult animals, including mammals, amphibians and fish, mainly in the germinal cells. In young rats, the citrylglutamate concentration increases with age and coincides with the development of late spermatocytes into early spermatids. Rats with seminiferous tubule failure induced by ductuli efferentes ligation and experimental cryptorchidism are infertile as a result of germ cell depletion, especially spermatocytes and early spermatids. The effect on paraoxonase and arylesterase activities of bee pollen against deltamethrin in Cyprinus carpio.

This study aimed to determine whether dietary bee pollen protects common carp (Cyprinus carpio) from deltamethrin (DM)-induced oxidative stress by modulating serum paraoxonase (PON) and arylesterase (ARE) activities. DM, a widely used pyrethroid insecticide, can impair antioxidant defenses in aquatic organisms. PON and ARE, two HDL-associated enzymes with antioxidant properties, were used as biomarkers to evaluate oxidative stress. Fish were exposed to two sublethal concentrations of DM (0.018 and 0.036 µg/L) for 14 days, with or without dietary supplementation of 2% chestnut-origin bee pollen

Investigation of β-Carboline Alkaloid Harmaline Against Cyvirus cyprinidallo3 Infection In Vitro and In Vivo.

Cyvirus cyprinidallo3, also known as Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3), is a common pathogen of koi and common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Infection of CyHV-3 can lead to high mortality in fry under 4 months of age. CyHV-3 can become latent in recovered fish, and latent CyHV-3 can reactivate under stress conditions and spread the virus. Reactivation of CyHV-3 can also lead to mortality and diseases in latently infected fish. No effective drugs are available to prevent CyHV-3 infection or reactivation from latency. There is a need for the discovery of anti-CyHV-3 drugs. Harmine (HAR) and harmaline (H

Collagen-affecting drugs impair regeneration of teleost tail fins.

Regenerating tail fins were studied in two species of teleosts, Tilapia rendalli and Cyprinus carpio, treated with indomethacin, aspirin, dexamethasone, penicillamine, and beta-aminoproprionitrile, drugs known to disrupt collagen metabolism in mammals. Collagen was studied under the light microscope by the Picrosirius-polarization method and also under the electron microscope. In general, these drugs disturbed the deposition and organization of collagen fibrils leading to abnormally thin or practically absent lepidotrichia and actinotrichia, and also to disorganized fibrous connective tissue.

Injury-induced gelatinase and thrombin-like activities in regenerating and nonregenerating nervous systems.

It is now widely accepted that injured nerves, like any other injured tissue, need assistance from their extracellular milieu in order to heal. We compared the postinjury activities of thrombin and gelatinases, two types of proteolytic activities known to be critically involved in tissue healing, in nonregenerative (rat optic nerve) and regenerative (fish optic nerve and rat sciatic nerve) neural tissue. Unlike gelatinases, whose induction pattern was comparable in all three nerves, thrombin-like activity differed clearly between regenerating and nonregenerating nervous systems. Postinjury lev

Deciphering the microplastic toxicity cascade in freshwater fish: Integrating machine learning and multi-level biological responses.

This study evaluated the effects of polyamide microplastics (PA-MPs) on juvenile grass carp by integrating histopathology, oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, immune-related gene expression, swimming behaviour and growth performance through a multi-layered statistical and machine-learning framework. Fish were exposed to 0, 10, 100 and 1000 μg/g PA-MPs for 30 days. Lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase increased dose-dependently, indicating oxidative stress, while brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was inhibited by 27.2% and responded significantly even at the lowest exposure, identi

Acoustic and Multimodal Deterrents to Limit Invasive Fish Passage.

Acoustic deterrents have been deployed with variable success to decrease fish interactions with anthropogenic hazards (i.e., power plant intakes and spillways) and prevent the spread of invasive species. Acoustic deterrents are nonphysical barriers that offer many advantages in that sound can travel a great distance, are relatively independent of light and weather conditions, do not interfere with navigation and are relatively inexpensive to implement. Assessing the efficacy of deterrents is challenging as there are few controlled or long-term studies and many reports fail to specify sound par

Toward surrogate-based conservation: Preservation of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) spermatogonial stem cells.

In this study, we optimized cryopreservation and hypothermic storage protocols for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). As the European eel is listed as a critically endangered fish species on the IUCN red list, there is a strong need to develop and advance ex situ conservation strategies beyond the current conservation measures. Cryopreservation of SSCs was done through freezing and vitrification of testicular tissue pieces. Freezing was optimized through five sequential experiments and has yielded SSC post-thaw viability above 50%. The physiological competen

The interaction between polyethylene microplastics and ciprofloxacin on inducing hepatotoxicity in Carassius auratus via the gut-liver axis.

Microplastics (MPs) can accumulate and enrich antibiotics in aquatic environments, with their interactions exacerbating threats to aquatic organisms and complicating hepatotoxicity. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the effects of single or combined exposure to polyethylene MPs and ciprofloxacin (CIP) on hepatic injury in crucian carp, and to reveal the potential gut-liver axis toxicity mechanisms. The results showed that MPs enhanced the bioaccumulation of CIP, which increased with increasing MPs concentration. Co-exposure induced extensive eosinophilic necrosis and localised hepatocyt
