We investigated how skeletal muscle mass (SMM) affects spinal sagittal balance (radiographic parameters) in symptomatic spinal patients. The first purpose of this study was to evaluate the body composition and the spinal sagittal alignment in symptomatic spinal patients. The second purpose of this study was to compare whether the body composition and the spinal sagittal alignment is different in patients with cervical spine disease and lumbar spine disease. We retrospectively evaluated 313 patients who were hospitalized for surgery to treat spinal degenerative disease, who were divided into ce

Although cervical softening is critical in pregnancy, there currently is no objective method for assessing the softness of the cervix. Shear wave speed (SWS) estimation is a noninvasive tool used to measure tissue mechanical properties such as stiffness. The goal of this study was to determine the spatial variability and assess the ability of SWS to classify ripened versus unripened tissue samples. Ex vivo human hysterectomy samples (n = 22) were collected; a subset (n = 13) were ripened. SWS estimates were made at 4 to 5 locations along the length of the canal on both anterior and posterior h

The length of the cervical spine in a series of 206 adult males with cleft lip and/or palate and 50 normal controls was measured. The patients were divided into five subgroups according to the type and extent of the cleft. The shortening of the spine was most marked in bilateral cleft lip and palate patients (complete), less marked in unilateral cleft lip and palate patients, and was slight in isolated cleft palate patients. Complete isolated cleft palate and cleft lip was not associated with a shortening of the spine. A shortening of the cervical spine in less extensive types of isolated clef

This prospective longitudinal study compares the ability of conventional and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters made at the cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) site to predict long-term neurological and functional outcomes. Twenty patients with CSCI, with follow-up at 6 or 12 months, and 15 control volunteers were included. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and DTI parameters were measured on admission and follow-up studies. Stepwise regression analysis was performed to find relevant parameters (normalized DTI values, conventional MRI measurements, hemorrhagic contusion [HC]

Unlike mammalian, disc-shaped intervertebral joints (IVJs), the IVJs in fishes are biconid structures, filled with fluid and thought to act as hydrostatic hinge joints during swimming. However, it remains unclear which IVJ structures are dominant in mechanical resistance to forces in fishes, and whether variation in these tissues might impact the function of the vertebral column along its length. Here, we measured the dynamic mechanical behaviour of IVJs from striped bass, Morone saxatilis. During lateral bending, angular stiffness was significantly lower in the caudal and cervical regions, re

This study aims to investigate the association between adenoid hypertrophy and facial development. A total of 388 children aged 1-13 years old who had undergone head MRI in Foshan Maternal and Child Health Hospital were collected, including 196 hypertrophic cases and 192 normal cases. The maxillofacial soft tissue indicators were measured and compared. The A/N ratio and adenoid thickness consistently increased with age in the hypertrophic group and the A/N ratio reached a maximum value three years earlier than the normal group. BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Anterior cervical disc replacement (ACDR) and minimally invasive posterior cervical foraminotomy (MI-PCF) have emerged as two increasingly popular alternatives to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for the management of cervical radiculopathy. Both techniques provide advantages of segmental motion preservation and lower rates of adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) compared to ACDF.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical and functional outcomes of patients undergoing ACDR or MI-PCF for the treatment of unilateral cervical radiculopathy.

STUDY DESIGN: Meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis investigates the outcomes of laminoplasty (LP) and laminectomy with fusion (LF) to guide effective patient selection for these 2 procedures.
BACKGROUND: Although LF traditionally offers the ability for excellent posterior decompression, it may alter cervical spine biomechanics and increase the risk of adjacent segment degeneration. LP aims to preserve the natural kinematics of the spine but has not been universally accepted, and may be associated with inadequate decompression, neck pain, and recurrent stenosis.

OBJECT: Most of the craniometric relationships of the normal craniocervical junction (CCJ), especially those related to angular craniometry, are still poorly studied and based on measurements taken from simple plain radiographs. In this study, the authors performed a craniometric evaluation of the CCJ in a population without known CCJ anomalies. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the normal CCJ craniometry based on measurements obtained from CT scans.
METHOD: The authors analyzed 100 consecutive CCJ CT scans obtained in adult patients who were admitted at their tertiary hospital for tre

BACKGROUND: The valid operative standard for primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) consists of cervicotomy and presentation of all parathyroid glands. This operative technique features the macroscopic identification of the responsible adenoma. It also has the advantage of detecting multiglandular disease. The increasing sensitivity of preoperative localization methods and the possibility of intra-operative measurement of parathyroid hormone prepared the way for minimally invasive procedures.
METHODS: All patients with pHPT were examined by cervical sonography and sestamibi scintigraphy of the pa

BACKGROUND: Cervical spine manipulation (CSM) is a frequently used treatment for neck pain. Despite its demonstrated efficacy, concerns regarding the potential of stretch damage to vertebral arteries (VA) during CSM remain. The purpose of this study was to quantify the angular displacements of the head relative to the sternum and the associated VA length changes during the thrust phase of CSM.
METHODS: Rotation and lateral flexion CSM procedures were delivered bilaterally from C1 to C7 to three male cadaveric donors (Jan 2016-Dec 2019). For each CSM the force-time profile was recorded using a

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Radiotherapy (RT) for cervical (CC) and endometrial cancer (EC) is known to lead to vaginal stenosis (VS), but the comparison between vaginal anatomical measurements and the risk of sexual dysfunction presents a wide variety of results among the literature. Thus, we sought to assess the prevalence of VS, vaginal measurements, sexual dysfunction and QOL in women with CC and EC submitted to pelvic RT with or without previous surgery.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study that included 61 women with CC and 69 with EC. VS was classified by the Common Terminology Criteria for

PURPOSE: Although conventional sonography has been used widely in evaluation of the abdominal and cervical esophagus, its use in the thoracic esophagus is seldom mentioned. The aim of this study was to assess whether conventional sonography could demonstrate the thoracic esophagus and to determine this structure's normal sonographic appearance and measurements.
METHODS: Transthoracic sonography was performed in 253 healthy volunteers ranging in age from 12 to 72 years (mean, 41 +/- 15 years). The subjects were examined while supine with their hands raised over their heads; the transducer was

Current neck injury criteria are based on structural failure of the spinal (vertebral) column without consideration of injury to the spinal cord. Since one of the primary functions of the vertebral column is to protect the cord, it stands to reason that a more refined measure of neck injury threshold would be the onset of spinal cord injury (SCI). This study investigated the relationship between axial strains in the cervical vertebral column and the spinal cord using an in vitro primate model (n=10) under continuous tensile loading. Mean failure loads occurred at 1951.5±396N with failure strai
