Quercetin enhances survival and axonal regeneration of motoneurons after spinal root avulsion and reimplantation: experiments in a rat model of brachial plexus avulsion.

BACKGROUND: Brachial plexus avulsion (BPA) physically involves the detachment of spinal nerve roots themselves and the associated spinal cord segment, leading to permanent paralysis of motor function of the upper limb. Root avulsion induces severe pathological changes, including inflammatory reaction, oxidative damage, and finally massive motoneuron apoptosis. Quercetin (QCN), a polyphenolic flavonoid found in abundance in fruit and vegetables, has been reported to possess anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects in many experimental models of both central nervous system

Fertility- and Nerve-sparing Laparoscopic Eradication of Deep Endometriosis with Total Posterior Compartment Peritonectomy: The Kurashiki Method.

OBJECTIVE: To show technical highlights of a nerve-sparing laparoscopic eradication of deep endometriosis (DE) with posterior compartment peritonectomy. DESIGN: Demonstration of the technique with narrated video footage. SETTING: An urban general hospital. A systematic review and meta-analysis has suggested significant advantages of the nerve-sparing technique when considering the relative risk of persistent urinary retention in the treatment of DE [1]. In addition, a recent article has suggested that complete excision of DE with posterior compartment peritonectomy could be the surgical trea

Associations between clinical diagnostic criteria and pretreatment patient-reported outcomes measures in a prospective observational cohort of patients with neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS) is caused by dynamic compression of the brachial plexus at the level of the supraclavicular scalene triangle or the subcoracoid (pectoralis minor) space, or both. The purpose of this study was to characterize relationships between 14 clinical diagnostic criteria (CDC) and seven pretreatment patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) in a prospective cohort of patients with NTOS. METHODS: There were 183 new patient referrals between July 1 and December 31, 2015, with 150 (82%) meeting an established set of predefined CDC for NTOS. PROMs wer

Distribution of the non-AT1, non-AT2 angiotensin-binding site in the rat brain: preliminary characterization.

The discovery of a novel, non-AT1, non-AT2 binding site for angiotensin II (Ang II) in the brain adds a new dimension to the brain angiotensin system. The distribution of the non-AT1, non-AT2 binding site in the rat brain was determined using radioligand-binding assays and in vitro receptor autoradiography. There is a marked rostral to caudal gradient of the density of this binding site from the olfactory bulbs to the cervical spinal cord, with a consistent binding affinity, K(d) approximately 1-3 nM. Binding is widespread throughout the brain, however, areas of very intense binding are presen

The effects of delayed nerve repair on neuronal survival and axonal regeneration after seventh cervical spinal nerve axotomy in adult rats.

It has been proposed clinically that delayed surgery after traumatic brachial plexus injury may adversely affect functional outcome. In the present experimental study the neuroprotective and growth-promoting effects of early and delayed nerve grafting following proximal seventh cervical spinal nerve (C7) axotomy were examined. The ventral branch of C7 spinal nerve was transected and axons projecting out of the proximal nerve stump were labelled with Fast Blue (FB). At the same time, the biceps brachii muscle was denervated by transecting the musculocutaneous nerve at its origin. Neuronal survi

Head and neck injuries in fatal motorcycle collisions as determined by detailed autopsy.

Detailed layer-by-layer autopsy of the head and neck was performed on a prospective series of 73 fatally injured motorcyclists in order to identify occult injuries, particularly soft tissue neck injuries such as hemorrhage of vertebral and carotid arteries. The fatal cases were gathered as part of a larger study of 1,082 on-scene in-depth motorcycle crash investigations in Thailand. Detailed neck dissection was done on nearly all fatal cases. Injuries were coded using the 1990 revision of the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS 90) and an Injury Severity Score (ISS) was determined for each case. Add

From Spine to Limbs: Imaging Insights and Clinical Correlation in Caudal Regression Syndrome.

Caudal regression syndrome (CRS) refers to a spectrum of congenital structural defects of the caudal region. We present a case of caudal regression syndrome with the objective of correlating the symptoms of caudal regression syndrome with the detailed imaging findings. A 05-year-old boy who was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in August 2025 , presented with a post-urethroplasty state of hypospadias, complaining of urinary incontinence through the normal meatus and a urethrocutaneous fistula. He had dribbling of urine through hypospadias and deformed feet since birth. He also de

Upper Limb Neural Tension Test and Spinal Biomechanics: Insights from a Longitudinal Pilot Study.

Background: The Upper Limb Neural Tension Test (ULNTT) is a common assessment for neurodynamic function, yet the relationship between ULNTT findings and specific spinal biomechanical patterns remains poorly understood, particularly in the context of cervicobrachial neuralgia. This study aimed to investigate the association between ULNTT asymmetry and cervicothoracic spine biomechanics using advanced motion capture analysis. Methods: A longitudinal experimental study was conducted on two groups of asymptomatic participants: one with ULNTT asymmetry > 10° (AS group, n = 12) and another with symm

Restoration of intrinsic hand function by superficial radial nerve: an anatomical study.

BACKGROUND: The contralateral seventh cervical (cC7) nerve root transfer represents a cornerstone technique in treating total brachial plexus avulsion injury. Traditional cC7 procedures employ the entire ulnar nerve as a graft, which inevitably compromises its restorative capacity. OBJECTIVE: Our cadaveric study seeks to assess this innovative approach aimed at preserving the motor branch of the ulnar nerve (MBUN). This new method aims to enable future repair stages, using the superficial radial nerve (SRN) as a bridge connecting cC7 and MBUN. METHODS: We undertook a comprehensive dissection

Rib-sparing scalenectomy for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome: Early results.

OBJECTIVE: Neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS) is no longer either "controversial" or "disputed"; however, its optimal surgical management remains unclear. Many thoracic outlet decompression procedures are performed by first rib resection, usually via a transaxillary route. METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained NTOS database was performed. Patients with NTOS associated with a cervical rib and those with recurrent NTOS were excluded from the present analysis. All study patients had satisfied a 5-point clinical diagnostic protocol and had experienced a positive re

Clinical and post mortem analysis of combat neck injury used to inform a novel coverage of armour tool.

INTRODUCTION: There is a requirement in the Ministry of Defence for an objective method of comparing the area of coverage of different body armour designs for future applications. Existing comparisons derived from surface wound mapping are limited in that they can only demonstrate the skin entry wound location. The Coverage of Armour Tool (COAT) is a novel three-dimensional model capable of comparing the coverage provided by body armour designs, but limited information exists as to which anatomical structures require inclusion. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of COAT, in the as

L-689,660, a novel cholinomimetic with functional selectivity for M1 and M3 muscarinic receptors.

1. L-689,660, 1-azabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, 3-(6-chloropyrazinyl)maleate, a novel cholinomimetic, demonstrated high affinity binding (pKD (apparent) 7.42) at rat cerebral cortex muscarinic receptors. L-689,660 had a low ratio (34) of pKD (apparent) values for the displacement of binding of the antagonist ([3H]-N-methylscopolamine ([3H]-NMS) compared with the displacement of the agonist [3H]-oxotremorine-M ([3H]-Oxo-M), in rat cerebral cortex. Low NMS/Oxo-M ratios have been shown previously to be a characteristic of compounds that are low efficacy partial agonists with respect to stimulation of ph

Cervical cord dysfunction during neck flexion in Hirayama's disease.

Neck flexion may play a role in the pathogenesis of Hirayama disease. Upper limb somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded in five patients with Hirayama disease, six patients with ALS, and 14 healthy subjects. Neck flexion caused a significant amplitude decrease of the N13 cervical response only in patients with Hirayama disease. Direct cord compression or microvascular changes can in theory account for this position-related dysfunction.
