Group-wise context selection network for choroid segmentation in optical coherence tomography.

Choroid thickness measured from optical coherence tomography (OCT) images has emerged as a vital metric in the management of retinal diseases such as high myopia. In this paper, we propose a novel group-wise context selection network (referred to as GCS-Net) to segment the choroid of either normal or high myopia eyes. To deal with the diverse choroid thickness and the variable shape of the pathological retina, GCS-Net adopts the group-wise channel dilation (GCD) module and the group-wise spatial dilation module, which can automatically select group-wise multi-scale information under the guidan…

Immunohistochemical expression of osteopontin and collagens in choroid plexus of human brains.

Evidence showing the functional significance of the choroid plexus is accumulating. Although it is clinically well-known that calcification is frequently seen in the choroid plexus of aged human brains, it is unclear why calcification occurs in the aged choroid plexus and what exert effects on the calcification has. In this study, immunohistochemical localizations of collagens and other molecules related to fibrosis or calcification were investigated on the choroid plexus of autopsied human brains. Densely fibrous or calcified materials were located in the stroma just below the epithelial cell…

Choroid plexus NKCC1 mediates cerebrospinal fluid clearance during mouse early postnatal development.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) provides vital support for the brain. Abnormal CSF accumulation, such as hydrocephalus, can negatively affect perinatal neurodevelopment. The mechanisms regulating CSF clearance during the postnatal critical period are unclear. Here, we show that CSF K+, accompanied by water, is cleared through the choroid plexus (ChP) during mouse early postnatal development. We report that, at this developmental stage, the ChP showed increased ATP production and increased expression of ATP-dependent K+ transporters, particularly the Na+, K+, Cl-, and water cotransporter NKCC1. Overe…

Choroid plexus cauterization to treat inadequate abdominal cerebrospinal fluid absorption: case report.

INTRODUCTION: Inadequate absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the setting of high CSF production is a relatively rare cause of shunt malfunction. CASE REPORT: We present the unique case of a 3-year-old boy who developed sterile ascites and abdominal distension in a delayed fashion after shunt placement. The shunt was externalized, and the patient was noted to have high CSF output. Bilateral choroid plexus cauterization resulted in a significant decrease in CSF production and enabled the shunt to be re-inserted into the abdomen.

Alpha-Smooth Muscle Actin-Positive Perivascular Cells in Diabetic Retina and Choroid.

Structural alterations of pericytes in microvessels are important features of diabetic retinopathy. Although capillary pericytes had been known not to have α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA), a recent study revealed that a specific fixation method enabled the visualization of αSMA along retinal capillaries. In this study, we applied snap-fixation in wild type and streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice to evaluate the differences in vascular smooth muscle cells of the retina and the choroid. Mice eyeballs were fixed in ice-cold methanol to prevent the depolymerization of filamentous actin. Snap-fixated…

Choroid plexus coagulation in trisomy 9 mosaic-related hydrocephalus-a case report.

In trisomy 9 mosaicism, plexus hypertrophy has been described as a phenotypical feature and cause of hydrocephalus. We report on a 15-month- … ) production indirectly via abdominal CSF drainage. In an individual trial, we performed endoscopic choroid plexus cauterization to reduce cerebrospinal fluid production, which failed to reduce excessive CSF production. In a second procedure, a ventriculoatrial shunt was implanted and succeeded to treat persistent hydrocephalus.

Vanishing diffuse leptomeningeal contrast enhancement in an infant with choroid plexus papilloma.

Choroid plexus tumors (CPT) can present in the baseline magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with lesions compatible with leptomeningeal dissemination. Therapeutic strategy in this condition is controversial. We present a case of an infant with CPP and significant diffuse leptomeningeal contrast enhancement at diagnosis, which spontaneously resolved after removal of the primary tumor. In these challenging cases, several aspects, such as histopathological/molecular diagnosis and close radiological follow-up, should be taken into account to avoid unnecessary treatments.

MicroRNA expression profile in retina and choroid in oxygen-induced retinopathy model.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic retinopathies (IRs) are leading causes of visual impairment. They are characterized by an initial phase of microvascular degeneration and a second phase of aberrant pre-retinal neovascularization (NV). microRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression, and a number play a role in normal and pathological NV. But, post-transcriptional modulation of miRNAs in the eye during the development of IRs has not been systematically evaluated. AIMS & METHODS: Using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) we profiled miRNA expression in the retina and choroid during vasodegenerative and NV phases …

18F-Flortaucipir Binding in Choroid Plexus: Related to Race and Hippocampus Signal.

BACKGROUND: On target 18F-Flortaucipir (FTP) binding of Alzheimer's disease tau aggregates and off-target binding of melanocytes have been demonstrated with autoradiography. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that if binding in choroid plexus (CP) is due to melanocytes, the signal would be elevated in Black/African American (B/AA) compared to White (W) participants. In addition, we examined whether CP signal affects measurements in adjacent regions, and whether correcting for spill-in effects has an influence on associations between hippocampus (HC) FTP and amyloid or cognition…

Therapeutic implications of the choroid plexus-cerebrospinal fluid interface in neuropsychiatric disorders.

The choroid plexus (CP) comprises an epithelial monolayer that forms an important physical, enzymatic and immunologic barrier, called the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB). It is a highly vascularized organ located in the brain ventricles that is key in maintaining brain homeostasis as it produces cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and has other important secretory functions. Furthermore, the CP-CSF interface plays a putative role in neurogenesis and has been implicated in neuropsychiatric diseases such as the neurodevelopmental disorders schizophrenia and autism. A role for this CNS border was…

Intrauterine diagnosis and pathology of fetal choroid plexus carcinoma--a case study.

This is a case report of a 39-year-old pregnant woman whose fetus was found to have a large hydrocephalus on routine prenatal ultrasound at … rth weight of 2920 g. The infant expired 4h following delivery. Autopsy revealed a carcinoma of the choroid plexus. Our case, like others, suggests that MRI is more accurate than prenatal ultrasound in prenatal brain tumor diagnosis. More precise morphological detail is provided by MRI, which improves surgical planning and survival.

Mixed hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation of iris and choroid in Chediak-Higashi syndrome.

An 8-year-old Taiwanese girl presented with hyperpigmentation and scattered hypopigmentation in her irides and choroids. Her skin showed hyperpigmentation with speckled hypopigmentation over cheeks and sun-exposed areas. Medical history was remarkable for frequent infectious episodes and lower extremity bruising. A peripheral blood smear revealed large inclusion bodies in the cytoplasm of neutrophils. The patient was diagnosed with Chediak-Higashi syndrome and continues to be monitored closely.
