A method was developed to quantify the sulphur formed in decomposed sodium thiosulphate injection solutions. Elemental sulphur was extracted with cyclohexane (LLE) and analysed by RP-HPLC. A linear calibration curve with a detection limit of 24 micrograms/ml was obtained. Different amounts of sulphur were detected in extemporaneous and commercial solutions.

A sensitive determination method for melatonin was developed. Melatonin was derivatized under alkaline conditions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The resultant fluorophore was excited at 247 nm and the emission wavelength was 384 nm. The Stokes shift was 137 nm, which was longer than that of melatonin itself (lambda ex 280 nm, lambda em 330 nm). We developed a new method for the rapid determination of urinary organic acids using liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry. Mass spectra of authentic organic acids obtained in the negative-ion mode showed intense [M-H]- ions with some fragment ions. Urine samples of patients with methylmalonic aciduria, ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency, and phenylketonuria were extracted using anion-exchange columns. The enantiomers of the antiinflammatory drug Etodolac were separated without derivatization on Chiralcel OD and Pirkle (R)-DNBPG columns. Enantiomeric purity can be determined in less than 10 min. A method for the determination of cyanide in human urine has been developed. The method is based on the reaction of cyanide with 2,3-naphthalenedialdehyde and taurine to give a fluorescent product for reversed-phase HPLC separation and fluorometric detection. After centrifugation followed by dilution of urine samples, the specimens could be analysed directly by this method. The recovery of cyanide added to urine at concentration levels of 50-1000 pmol/mL was 85-96%. The detection limit of cyanide was 30 pmol/mL in urine.
