OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the long-term efficacy of cannulated internal fixation in patients who sustain femoral neck fracture (FNF) and risk factors influencing the outcomes.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from 73 elderly patients aged ≥60 years old, hospitalized for FNF and treated with cannulated internal fixation between August 2008 and July 2016. The inclusion criteria were: (i) patients aged ≥60 years; (ii) patients with recent femoral neck fracture, with times of injury ranging from 12-72 h; and (iii) patients who underwent Garden II-IV closed reduction and internal fixa

Bilateral simultaneous fracture dislocation of the talus is a very rare injury. It occurs usually following high-velocity injuries. We report a 45-year-old man who presented with bilateral talar fracture dislocation following a heavy stone falling on him. On his right side, he had open talus dislocation with lateral process fracture and on his left side he had closed talar neck fracture dislocation. He underwent immediate debridement and external fixator application for his right side and open reduction and internal fixation for his left talus. At the end of 34 months' follow-up, he was able t

BACKGROUND: Forearm fractures constitute approximately 40% of all pediatric fractures. Generally, in conservative treatment,a plaster cast is applied with the elbow in 90° flexion. Success of the treatment depends on theprevention of the reduction in the correct position and suitable duration of the plaster cast. Failure, or the risk of angulation within the cast, is associated with movement within the cast. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of the Cast Index (CI) and Three-Point Index (TPI) measurements, which indicate the loss of reduction, in pediatric mid-third forear

Eleven radial nerve paralyses, associated with supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children, are reported: 2 incomplete motor, 5 complete motor, 2 complete motor and partial sensory and 2 complete motor and total sensory. The palsy was noticed before any treatment in 8 cases. In the 3 other cases, the palsy was secondary to difficult and repetitive closed reduction manoeuvers. The fractures were all of the extension type, grade III in 2 cases and IV in 9 cases. The displacement of the distal fragment was posterior and medial in 8 cases. Initial treatment of the fracture was conservative

Entrapment of the flexor tendon after fracture of both forearm bones is very rare. This report describes entrapment of the middle finger flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) tendon alone in the radius fracture site. A 13-year-old boy fractured both forearms and had closed reduction and a long-arm cast. After the cast was removed he had full middle finger motion with the wrist flexed but was unable to extend the proximal interphalangeal or metacarpophalangeal joints and could extend only the distal interphalangeal joint of the middle finger with the wrist in the neutral or extension position. BACKGROUND: There is a high rate of redisplacement after closed reduction and cast treatment of displaced both-bone forearm shaft fractures in children. Little evidence is available on the efficacy of rereduction of these redisplaced fractures. This study evaluates the impact of rereduction on radiographic outcomes and compares the cost to surgical stabilization.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 31 children (mean age, 6.3 y; 18 boys) treated with rereduction for redisplacement of a displaced both-bone forearm shaft fracture between 2008 and 2013. Angulation was measured on anteropos

The aim of the present study was to retrospectively review the treatment outcome of low subcondylar temporomandibular joint fractures. The retrospective analysis was performed on all patients treated for low subcondylar fractures (below the sigmoid notch) between 2006 and 2011. Patients were divided into two groups: the closed reduction group (maxillomandibular fixation, MMF) and the open reduction group (anteroparotid transmasseteric (APTM) approach). Out of 129 condylar fractures, a total of 37 patients met the inclusion criterion of a fracture below the sigmoid notch (low subcondylar). Ten

Ninety-four conservatively treated patients with Lauge Hansen Stage II supination-eversion fractures of the ankle were interviewed after 16-25 years. Patients with pain were examined clinically and radiographically. Eighty-nine patients had good and five medium results. Our observations compare well with published reports of open treatment. We conclude that this particular fracture type is so benign that it can be treated closed without reduction.

Coronoid fractures are less frequent injuries seen in around one-tenth of patients with elbow dislocation. Any injury to the coronoid process can be associated with elbow instability, in which injury to collateral ligaments co-exists, resulting in a loss of congruency of the elbow joint. However, there is a scarcity of evidence regarding patients' management with elbow dislocation and associated coronoid fractures. So, our aim is to assess the functional outcome of the elbow after operative fixation in patients with any type of coronoid fracture with associated elbow dislocation. A total of si

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: A retrospective study reports the evolution of patients treated for dislocation of one or several of the four medial carpometacarpal joints.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In five of twenty-six patients, the dislocations were undiagnosed in emergency. Twenty-five dislocations were dorsal. A patient presented a divergent dislocation of the four medial metacarpals proximal ends. The mean age was 25-30 years. Twenty-six patients were treated: ten by closed reduction and sixteen by open reduction. Stabilization by oblique K-wire pining was used in twenty-four cases. Twenty patients

INTRODUCTION: Both-bone forearm fractures are common in pediatric patients and most often result from a fall onto an outstretched hand. Although rare, nerve entrapments, particularly of the median nerve, can occur, especially following closed reduction.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 13-year-old male who sustained a both-bone forearm fracture while on vacation in Mexico. The injury was managed with closed reduction and casting. Despite appropriate treatment, the patient developed progressive numbness, tingling, and thenar atrophy in the median nerve distribution. Electromyography and n

Flexion-type pediatric humeral supracondylar fractures are rare, and the reduction technique remains contradictory. A minimally invasive technique using percutaneous leverage reduction combined with an external fixator was described to achieve satisfactory reduction and avoid the open reduction in this study. The operation and clinical results of patients treated with this technique were retrospectively compared with traditional closed reduction. From January 2013 to January 2018, children diagnosed with displaced flexion-type humeral supracondylar fractures were included in this study. Patien

BACKGROUND: Recommended treatment for severely displaced proximal humeral fractures in children is the closed reduction and percutaneous fixation by K-wires or intramedullary nailing.
METHODS: From January 2016 to January 2017 6, 21 children/adolescents (range 8 to 16 years) with proximal humeral fractures were treated surgically for severe displacement. In these six patients, several attempts of closed reduction were unsuccessful, and an open reduction was performed. The humeral head was fixed with a 3.5 mm T-plate without affecting the growth plate. Plate removal was performed at a mean int

BACKGROUND: Perilunate dislocations and fracture-dislocations are high-energy wrist injuries. Standard treatment involves urgent closed reduction followed by open reduction and fixation of both radial (scapholunate) and ulnar (lunotriquetral) intervals. In our experience, fixation of the radial-sided injury alone (scaphoid fracture or scapholunate ligament tear) restores carpal alignment without separate lunotriquetral stabilization. We present the largest series to date using this approach.
METHODS: Between 2004 and 2025, 36 patients with acute perilunate injuries were treated by a single su

INTRODUCTION: Segmental femur fractures, an uncommon injury pattern, are usually caused by high-energy trauma such as road traffic accidents. Despite their complexity, early intervention is essential for maximising recovery and reducing complications.
CASE REPORT: A 34-year-old male presented with multiple fractures, including a triple-segmental shaft femur fracture, following a high-energy road traffic accident. An intramedullary nail was used for closed reduction and internal fixation of the femur fracture, which provided stable fixation while preserving the blood supply and minimising soft

We present an 80-year-old woman with osteoporosis who sustained a fall, resulting in a closed left distal radius fracture and a grade I open ulna fracture. She underwent open reduction internal fixation. Four months later, the radius healed, but the ulna showed delayed union. Initial bone stimulator therapy was ineffective, and computed tomography scans confirmed nonunion at 6 and 9 months after surgery. Revision surgery was considered, but her treatment was changed to teriparatide, a parathyroid hormone analog that stimulates bone healing. Within 2 months, progressive ulnar healing was noted,

Traumatic Inferior dislocation of hip in adult is an extremely rare occurrence. We report a case of an inferior hip dislocation associated with an intertrochanteric fracture. Treatment consisted of an initial closed manipulative reduction of the dislocation with the aid of a Schanz screw inserted in a T handle universal chuck and using C-arm imaging. A dynamic hip screw was then used to fix the intertrochanteric fracture. At 2.5 years after the injury, the patient has symmetrical range of motion versus his contra lateral normal hip. Radiographs of the hip show normal anatomy without signs of a

The authors present the case of a 36-year-old patient who sustained a unilateral fracture-dislocation C7-T1 involving all three columns, given the lesion of the C7-T1 disc on MRI. In view of the fractured facet, closed reduction without anaesthesia was not attempted. First, open reduction and instrumentation were performed from posteriorly. In a second operation, anterior fusion C7-T1 was added, using a tricortical bone graft and instrumentation. The authors felt that this three-column lesion at the cervicothoracic junction necessitated combined posterior-anterior stabilisation.

Avulsion fractures of the tibial tuberosity occurred in 7 adolescents. Their ages ranged from 13 to 16 years. With one exception the fracture occurred while the patients were engaged in vigorous sports, particularly soccer and jumping. Open reduction was necessary in 4 patients with dislocation of the tibial tuberosity. Closed reduction was successful in 1 patient while two patients were treated via cast immobilisation. In all patients there was a total disappearance of symptoms within 3 months to 4 years. A classification scheme and the indications for surgery are discussed.

The results of ten acute, displaced proximal femoral fractures in patients 14 years and under are reported. These high-risk fractures were managed with urgent open reduction and pin or screw fixation with supplemental spica casting. The exception to this protocol was in two Delbet's type IV (intertrochanteric) fractures which were managed by closed reduction and spica casting. There was a case of partial avascular necrosis of the femoral head in a type I transepiphyseal fracture. At a minimum followup of 2 years the patients were asymptomatic with no significant limitation of hip motion.
