A prospective study of impairment of cognition and memory and recovery after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

In this prospective study, a series of 89 patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), most of whom had a "good" neurological outcome, were assessed with a range of tests of memory and cognition as inpatients and at 10 weeks and 12 months after SAH. On tests of verbal cognition and memory, most patients had scores in the normal range 12 months after SAH. However, a significant number of patients still showed impairment on tests of visuospatial construction and memory, mental flexibility, and psychomotor speed at the 12-month assessment. Statistical analyses were carried out for each test score

Association of Malaysian-MIND Diet Scores with Brain Activation in Older Adults: A Functional MRI Study.

Background/Objectives: Cognitive flexibility and working memory are regulated by the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), which is closely linked to the progression of cognitive decline. The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for the Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet shows potential to lower cognitive decline risk in older adults. This study aimed to examine the association between Malaysian-MIND diet (MY-MINDD©) scores with brain activation among Malaysian older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among forty older adults aged 60-75 years. Subjects were stratified into qu…

Effects of chemotherapy on cognitive and physical effort-based decision-making tasks in rats.

RATIONALE: Cancer-related fatigue is one of the most reported issues following cancer and its treatment, affecting the quality of life of cancer patients and survivors. However, the effects of chemotherapy on motivational and decision-making processes related to fatigue remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the effects of the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) on physical and cognitive effort-based decision-making using novel behavioural procedures in rats. METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats received DOX (2 mg/kg, i.p.) or vehicle once weekly for four weeks. Voluntar

Evidence consistent with accelerated inhibitory build-up following stronger subliminal motor activation: An EEG trajectory-fitting analysis.

Subliminal motor inhibition is a crucial form of unconscious cognitive control that protects the sensorimotor system from interference to some extent. A large body of evidence has shown that this inhibition is strengthened in response to strong subliminal activation. Beyond inhibitory strength, the build-up rate of inhibition is another critical dimension of cognitive control. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether the build-up rate of inhibition varies. This study investigated this by using the mathematically derived slopes of lateralized readiness potential (LRP) waveforms as build-up rates. LR

Radiotherapy-induced neurocognitive decline among adult intracranial tumor patients: A voxel-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Cranial irradiation is a key component of neuro-oncological treatment but can result in cognitive side effects. Preserving cognition from radiotherapy-(RT)-induced toxicity remains an ongoing debate. To spatially map radiotoxic effects in patients who underwent cranial RT, this study applied a voxel-based approach. METHODS: Cognitive assessments (Controlled Word Association (COWA), Hopkins Verbal Learning (HVLT-R), and Trail Making Tests (TMT A,B)) were conducted prospectively before, 6 months and 1 year post-RT in 111 intracranial tumor patients (18-80 years). Reliable change ind

Examining Patient Feedback and the Role of Cognitive Arousal in Treatment Non-response to Digital Cognitive-behavioral Therapy for Insomnia during Pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Insomnia affects over half of pregnant and postpartum women. Early evidence indicates that cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI) improves maternal sleep and mood. However, standard CBTI may be less efficacious in perinatal women than the broader insomnia population. This study sought to identify patient characteristics in a perinatal sample associated with poor response to CBTI, and characterize patient feedback to identify areas of insomnia therapy to tailor for the perinatal experience. PARTICIPANTS: Secondary analysis of 46 pregnant women with insomnia symptoms who we

Frontal Eye Field Leads a Distributed Oculomotor Circuit for Abstract Categorical Decisions.

Flexible decisions require the brain to transform sensory evidence into abstract, task-relevant variables and then into actions. Understanding this process requires identifying how distributed neural populations represent sensory, cognitive, and motor variables, and how interareal interactions mediate transformations between them. We simultaneously recorded population activity in frontal eye field (FEF), lateral intraparietal area (LIP) and superior colliculus (SC) while monkeys performed a flexible yet urgent visual motion-categorization task. Within this network, FEF first encoded abstract c

Understanding the challenges, unmet needs, and expectations of mucopolysaccharidoses I, II and VI patients and their caregivers in France: a survey study.

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of inherited lysosomal storage diseases caused by defective enzyme activity involved in the catalysis of glycosaminoglycans. Published data on adult patients with MPS remains scarce. Therefore, the present qualitative survey study was aimed at understanding knowledge of the disease, unmet needs, expectations, care, and overall medical management of adult/adolescent patients with MPS I, II and VI and their caregivers in France. RESULTS: A total of 25 patients (MPS I, np = 11; MPS II, np = 9; MPS VI, np = 5) were included and about 36 in-depth

Modifying cognition and behavior with electrical microstimulation: implications for cognitive prostheses.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

A fundamental goal of cognitive neuroscience is to understand how brain activity generates complex mental states and behaviors. While neuronal activity may predict or correlate with behavioral responses in a cognitive task, the use of electrical microstimulation presents the possibility to augment such correlational findings with direct evidence for causal relationships. Although microstimulation has been used for many years as a tool for mapping sensory and motor function, its role in learning, memory and decision-making has emerged only recently. Focal microstimulation of higher cortical are

Patient Engagement and Symptom Outcomes in a Provider-Guided Online Symptom Management Intervention: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors often experience declining engagement in digital health interventions (DHIs). However, predictors of engagement with provider-guided DHIs remain unclear. Nurse WRITE (Nurse Written Representational Intervention To Ease Symptoms), an effective 8-week nurse-directed symptom management DHI, offers an opportunity to identify factors influencing engagement and enhance intervention efficacy evaluation. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to (1) understand engagement phenomena (dimensions, influencing factors, and challenges), and (2) assess the relationship between engagement an

PKR downregulation prevents copper-induced synaptic dysfunction and cognitive impairment in a murine model of Wilson's disease.

Synaptic efficacy is critical for memory formation and consolidation. Accumulating evidence suggest that synapses are impaired during Wilson's disease (WD), contributing to neuronal dysfunction and cognitive decline. WD is a prototypical condition among the copper metabolism disorders. Cognitive impairment is a common feature of affected patients with neurological symptoms, presenting as memory deficits, decreased cognitive flexibility, and impaired learning capabilities. These cognitive deficits can significantly impact the quality of life, affecting work and academic performance. However, th…
