A Case of Sigmoid Colon Perforation Associated with Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate in a Patient with Advanced Rectal Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) binds with potassium in the gastrointestinal tract and increases fecal potassium excretion. Since SZC is a novel and non-swelling drug, the risk of intestinal perforation is not mentioned in the package insert. We hereby report the case of sigmoid colon perforation caused by hard stools and severe hypokalemia in a patient suffering from advanced rectal cancer, who was taking SZC. CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her 80s with a history of primary biliary cirrhosis and decompensated cirrhosis accompanied by hyperkalemia was administered SZC. The p

A case of acute colonic pseudo-obstruction, sigmoid volvulus, and massive pneumoperitoneum in a young female patient.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (ACPO) is an uncommon phenomenon that is especially rare in young patients and can result in bowl ischemia and perforation if left untreated. Furthermore, pneumoperitoneum is almost always a concerning imaging finding and in the context of recent colonic resection may be a sign of anastomotic leakage. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of a young female patient with postpartum ACPO who subsequently underwent a hemicolectomy with colorectal anastomosis. The patient's hospital course was complicated by massive postoperative pneumo

Sigmoid colon perforation with splenic abscess due to ulcerative colitis: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The occurrence of abscesses in the spleen, a substantial abdominal organ with hematopoietic function, is relatively rare in clinical cases and mostly occurs in immunodeficient populations. The early symptoms of splenic abscess are not obvious, and the diagnosis is usually confirmed by a combination of patient symptoms, imaging manifestations and blood culture results. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old male patient was treated in the emergency room for severe lower abdominal pain and discomfort. An abdominal CT(Computed Tomography) examination initially suggested an

Difficult diagnosis in the clinical evaluation of a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the sigmoid colon: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the sigmoid colon is an exceedingly rare subtype of colorectal cancer (CRC) associated with chronic inflammatory conditions. Due to its variable clinical presentation ranging from subclinical to fully symptomatic and limited available information, it poses a diagnostic challenge. We aim to provide a review of the current literature and raise awareness about the importance of a thorough clinical analysis for an early diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 59-year-old Peruvian woman with a medical history of diverticular disease and

[A Case of Laparoscopic Resection for a Primary Malignant Lymphoma of the Small Intestine Strongly Adhered to the Sigmoid Colon].

An 85-year-old man presented to our hospital for loss of consciousness. Blood test revealed anemia, and the fecal occult blood test was positive. Colonoscopy revealed an ileal ulcer located 10-14 cm from the ileal end on the proximal side. Pathological examination was indicative of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma(DLBCL), and laparoscopic resection was selected as the technique of choice. The ileal tumor was strongly adhered to the sigmoid colon, and laparoscopic partial resection of the ileum and sigmoid colon was performed. In general, primary gastrointestinal lymphomas may occur, for which per

Mesh migration into the sigmoid colon after total extraperitoneal hernioplasty - Report of a case and review of the literature.

Over the past three decades, the practice laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty has gained momentum. Mesh migration after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair is an uncommon mesh-related delayed complication which is more common after transabdominal preperitoneal repair as compared to total extraperitoneal (TEP) repair. We report the first case of mesh migration into the sigmoid colon after TEP presenting 10 years after surgery. A 72-year-old male presented with left iliac fossa pain and diffuse lump. His computed tomogram scan showed sigmoid colon adherent to internal oblique at the site of herni

Initial Computed Tomography Findings of Long and Distended Colon Are Risk Factors for the Recurrence of Sigmoid Volvulus.

BACKGROUND: Sigmoid volvulus is a common condition in elderly patients with elongated colons. Although endoscopic de-torsion is effective as the primary treatment of sigmoid volvulus, elective surgery is recommended because of the high risk of recurrence and high mortality rate. AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors for the recurrence of sigmoid volvulus. METHODS: Clinical records of patients treated at Shimane Prefectural Central Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Among 41 sigmoid volvulus patients who were successfully treated by endoscopic de-torsion and follow

Identification of the HT-29 cell line as a model for investigating MCT1 transporters in sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma.

MCT1 transporters play a crucial role in the symbiotic relationship between humans and their colonic microbiome by facilitating the transport of bacteria-derived short chain fatty acids. Expression of colonic MCT1 transporters, localized in surface epithelial cells, is regulated by luminal butyrate levels. However, MCT1 also transports lactate and can be used by cancer cells to facilitate anaerobic glycolysis. Using immunolocalization techniques, this study investigated whether changes in MCT1 during cancer varied between different colonic regions. Whilst MCT1 abundance did not significantly c

Laparoscopic resection of a sigmoid colon lipoma in a young female patient: A case report and review of the literature.

Lipomas of the sigmoid colon are rare entities. The present case describes a 27-year-old Caucasian woman who underwent a laparoscopic sigmoidectomy following the detection of a giant lipoma. The young patient was referred to the Emergency Department of the University Hospital of Heraklion (Crete, Greece) in May 2013 after experiencing intermittent abdominal cramping during defecation, and altering episodes of diarrhea and constipation. In addition, the patient described the protrusion of a solid tissue mass shaped like a 'champagne bottle cork' from the anus following defecation. These symptom

Evisceration of the small bowel through a perforated and prolapsed sigmoid colon: an unusual presentation of rectal prolapse.

Spontaneous prolapse of the sigmoid colon and evisceration of the small bowel through a rupture in the rectosigmoid is a rare presentation. We report a case of a 60-year-old man presenting with massive small bowel evisceration through a perforation in a prolapsed sigmoid colon. The patient had a 2-year history of rectal prolapse. He was also incontinent for flatus and liquid stool. There was no other significant medical history. After reduction of the small intestine, a large perforation was seen in the prolapsed sigmoid colon. The sigmoid colon was identified by presence of appendices epiploi

Recurrence of sigmoid colon carcinoma in the retained urethra after cystectomy: A case report and review of the literature.

Urethral recurrence arising from a primary colorectal adenocarcinoma is rare. Here, we report a case of urethral recurrence of sigmoid colon cancer, which developed after cysto-prostato-sigmoidectomy for sigmoid colon cancer invading the bladder. The patient underwent urethrectomy successfully and is currently tumor-free. Surgeons who follow patients with colorectal cancer invading the bladder should be aware of this case. The early detection of recurrence improves the chances for disease-free survival.

Colonic involvement in celiac disease and possible implications of the sigmoid mucosa organ culture in its diagnosis.

PURPOSE: Celiac disease (CD), a systemic autoimmune disorder that typically involves duodenal mucosa, can also affect other intestinal areas. Duodenal and oral mucosa organ culture has already been demonstrated as a reliable procedure to identify CD. The present study investigated gluten-dependent immunological activation of colonic mucosa in CD patients. We took advantage of the numerous colonoscopies performed for various clinical conditions or only for defensive medicine. METHODS: Forty-four patients with gastrointestinal symptoms or in need of colorectal cancer screening were divided into

[A case of sigmoid colon cancer, successfully treated by a multidisciplinary strategy for local recurrence and distant metastases].

We report a case of sigmoid colon cancer, successfully treated by a multidisciplinary strategy for local recurrence and distant metastases. This 60-year-old male patient underwent sigmoidectomy for sigmoid colon cancer. Three years after the operation, local recurrence with invasion to the left ureter was found, and we performed colectomy and left nephroureterectomy. One year after the resection, a second relapse lesion was discovered, which was considered unresectable, and was treated instead with radiation therapy(total 50 Gy). One year after the radiation therapy, five pulmonary metastases

Laparoscopic treatment of adult sigmoidorectal intussusception caused by a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon: a case report.

Intussusception is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in adult patients, but is common in children. In fact, it accounts for an estimated 1% of all cases of bowel obstruction in adults, although adult intussusception of the large intestine is rare. Sigmoidorectal intussusception, however, is a rare variety with few cases reported in the literature. A mucinous adenocarcinoma, a subtype of adenocarcinoma, is characterized by extracellular mucin production and accounts for between 5% and 15% of the neoplasms of the colon and rectum. Despite the general consensus supporting surgical resections

[Synchronous adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon and multifocal intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas in an elderly patient].

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms are a well-recognized pathologic entity of the pancreas that is being reported with increasing frequency. These tumours carry a relatively favourable prognosis and are frequently associated with extrapancreatic malignancies. The combination of advanced age and co-existence of two neoplasms challenges the planning of the best treatment option. A 78-year-old man presented with rectal bleeding which led to the diagnosis of a stenosing adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon. No metastatic lesions were present but a 30 mm intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm

Interstitial cells of Cajal reduce in number in recto-sigmoid Hirschsprung's disease and total colonic aganglionosis.

Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) play a key role in regulating gastrointestinal tract motility. The pathophysiological basis of colonic aperistalsis in Hirschsprung's disease (HD) is still not fully understood. Many studies reported that decreased numbers or disrupted networks of ICCs were associated with HD. Little information is available on the distribution of different subtypes of ICCs in HD. The aim of this study was to determine the alterations in density of different subtypes of ICC in colonic specimens of patients with total colonic and recto-sigmoid HD. Full thickness colonic specim

Anatomy of the sigmoid colon, rectum, and the rectovaginal pouch in women with enterocele and anterior rectal wall procidentia.

This study describes the anatomy of the rectovaginal pouch, the sigmoid colon, and rectum in women with posterior enterocele and anterior rectal wall procidentia. The anatomy of rectovaginal pouch, sigmoid colon, and rectum was described in 36 women with an enterocele (group A) and compared with those of 43 women (group B) without pelvic organ prolapse. Women with previous incontinence or prolapse surgery were excluded. The mean age in group A was 58 years (40-75) and in group B 35 years (19-64; P < 0.001). There were 15 nulliparas in group B. Nine women in group A had an internal anterior rec
