CONTEXT: African Americans constitute 13% of the US population yet account for nearly 50% of new HIV infections. Implementation of efficacious behavioral interventions can help reduce infections in this vulnerable population.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the efficacy of behavioral interventions to reduce HIV for African Americans among 78 randomized controlled trials that sampled at least 50% African Americans (N = 48,585, 81% African American), measured condom use or number of sexual partners, and provided sufficient information to calculate effect sizes.
METHODS: Independent raters coded partici

OBJECTIVE: To describe the design, methods and baseline findings of a multi-level prevention intervention to increase consistent condom use among persons at public social sites in Kingston, Jamaica, who have new or concurrent sexual partnerships.
METHODS: A two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 147 sites where persons meet new sex partners. Sites were identified by community informants as places where people meet new sexual partners, which include bars, street locations, bus stops, malls and others. Sites were sorted into 50 clusters based on geographic proximity and type of site and r

This study evaluates the efficacy of cultural adaptation of a voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) intervention, in increasing condom use and decreasing rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among a group of female sex workers (FSWs) in Guangxi, China. This intervention is modeled after the "state-of-the-science" VCT program that was developed and evaluated by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Project RESPECT. Four hundred FSWs were assigned to either an intervention group receiving the VCT intervention or a control group receiving standard of care STD testing and treat

Prevalence of HIV infection and AIDS cases is higher among inmates of correctional facilities than among the general population, especially for female inmates. This creates a strong need for effective HIV prevention with this population. Maryland's Prevention Case Management (PCM) program provides individual or group counseling to inmates nearing release to promote changes in risk behavior. Pretest and posttest surveys assess changes in perceived risk, condom attitudes, condom use self-efficacy, self-efficacy to reduce injection drug risk and other substance use risk, and behavioral intentions

In more than 75 percent of occasions of sexual intercourse, condoms were not used. When participants were categorized as at either high or lower risk for HIV infection based on their pattern of condom use, psychosocial factors that predicted risk level included measures of participants' self-reported efficacy in usi …

Most participants (72%) were willing to wait for condom-supported sex given the risk. Female sex workers (FSWs) in sub-Saharan Africa are disproportionately affected by HIV and gender-based violence (GBV). Substance use overlaps with these co-occurring epidemics to further increase FSWs' risk for negative health outcomes. We explored the relationship between substance use, GBV, and consistent condom use utilizing baseline data from a cohort of 496 FSWs in Tanzania. Results demonstrate high levels of alcohol use and GBV, and low levels of consistent condom use. Frequent intoxication during sex work was associated with increased odds of recent GBV (aOR 1.64, 95% CI 1.07, 2.49; p

Objective: College students are a high-risk population for new human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) diagnoses. Although condom use self-efficacy and HIV knowledge can protect against risky sexual behavior (RSB), these same protective factors have been shown to exacerbate RSB. The influence of alcohol use can further complicate these protective factors to influence RSB. Participants: 689 African American/Black and non-Hispanic White college students attending a public university in the Southeast United States. Method: This study sought to examine the relations between condom use self-efficacy a

The Health Belief Model (HBM) has been widely used to explain rationales for health risk-taking behaviors. Our qualitative study explored the applicability of the HBM to understand high-risk sexual behavior in Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) and to elaborate each component of the model. HIV knowledge and perception of HIV prevalence contributed to perceived susceptibility. An attitude of treatment optimism versus hard life in reality affected perceived severity. Perceived barriers included discomfort using condoms and condom availability. Perceived benefits included prevention of HIV a…

Clients of female sex workers (CFSW) are at high risk of HIV transmission. Circumcision reduces the risk of heterosexual transmission of HIV … illingness. Amongst uncircumcised participants, 20.9% anticipated risk compensation (i.e. would use condoms less frequently after being circumcised). Adjusting for background variables, inconsistent condom use during commercial sex and self-reported STD history in the last 6 months were significantly associated with anticipated risk compensation. It is fe …

STUDY DESIGN: A case report of the complications of a spinal cord injury (SCI) patient alternating between indwelling urethral catheter and a condom drainage system for bladder management.
OBJECTIVE: To highlight the importance of penile care for bladder drainage following SCI.
SETTING: Spinal Injuries Unit, Stanmore, UK.
SUBJECT: A 39-year-old male who sustained a lumbar level SCI in December 2000. He presented acutely with leakage of urine around his condom drainage device.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The examination revealed an eroded area on the ventral aspect of the proximal penile shaft, w

Correct and consistent male condom use can help prevent transmission of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy. Although alcohol is a risk factor for condomless sex, the relationship between alcohol and condomless sex is not fully understood, suggesting additional factors should be considered. Alcohol Expectancy (AE) Theory suggests that people's beliefs about the effects of alcohol might influence people's behaviors while intoxicated. Although research has investigated the relationship between sex-related AE and condomless sex, there is a lack of evidence synthesis. In this

The study assessed the relationship between postpartum intimate partner violence (IPV) and postpartum health risks among young mothers over time. Data were collected from 2001 to 2005 on young women aged 14-25 attending obstetrics and gynecology clinics in two US cities. Postpartum IPV (i.e., emotional, physical, sexual) was assessed at 6 and 12 months after childbirth (n = 734). Four types of postpartum IPV patterns were examined: emerged IPV, dissipated IPV, repeated IPV, and no IPV. Emerged IPV occurred at 12 months postpartum, not 6 months postpartum. Dissipated IPV occurred at 6 months po

In 2002-2005, a cross-sectional study to assess the potential for HIV transmission was carried out among 557 female and male-to-female transgender commercial sex workers (CSW) in three cities in the Netherlands. Female CSW (F-CSW), drug-using female CSW (DU), and transgender sex workers were recruited in street-based and establishment-based sites. An anonymous questionnaire was administrated by interviewers and a saliva sample was collected for HIV antibody testing. The overall HIV prevalence was 5.7% (31/547; 10 samples were excluded because of "intermediate" test results). HIV was more preva

A self-reported behaviour survey using an anonymous critical incident based questionnaire was administered by trained interviewers in 1998. Five hundred and thirty-one homosexual and bisexual men were recruited from gay bars, clubs, cafes, a sauna and 'cruising ground' in central Edinburgh. The use of alcohol and recreational drugs and details of sexual activity over the preceding three months and at the last sexual encounter were recorded. Unsafe sex was defined as anal sex without the use of a condom with a partner of unknown or different HIV status. Safer sex was defined as all other types

The 'Schoolies Week' phenomenon attracts more than 10,000 school leavers to Surfers Paradise in November and December each year. In a survey of these young people (N = 1796), from Queensland, New South Wales (NSW), and Victoria, about two-thirds of the young men and one-third of the young women expected to have sexual intercourse while in Surfers Paradise. Of these, about 80 per cent expected to use condoms. Most expected to be drunk most nights or every night of their holidays and 27 per cent of young men and 17 per cent of young women expected to be 'stoned' most nights or every night. Most …
