Podophyllin, a plant derivative of variable composition, is used widely within New Zealand as a treatment for genital warts. One local source of podophyllin has been tested for ability to cause mutagenic effects in Salmonella typhimurium as well as for effects on chromosomes of Chinese hamster AA8 cells. The Authors studied 37 women affected by vulvar condylomatosis. Thirty-four presented features of florid or microflorid condylomatosis, three were affected by flat condylomatosis, Papillomavirus (HPV) infection of the cervico-vaginal tract was present in 25 women. This study analyses the frequency and the way cervical condylomata develop during pregnancy. We looked at 102 case notes of patients with condylomata in pregnancy which were diagnosed between September 1979 and September 1982. The incidence of pregnancy in patients with these condylomatous conditions is 1.3% and the incidence of these condylomatous conditions in pregnant women is 2.12%, which is three times that found in the general population. Twenty-seven cervical condylomata were studied by morphological and immunohistochemical methods (peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique according to Sternberger, with some modifications). The antiserum was obtained from rabbits immunized by human papillomavirus virions; 37% of condylomata stained positively and the koilocytotic cells showed a dark brown nuclear stain. This technique, not particularly useful for diagnostic purposes, could be employed to obtain better understanding of the natural history of these cervical neoplasias.
