Assessment of a Multispecies Probiotic Supplement for Relief of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis: A Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial.

Background: Early phase clinical research provided initial support for the use of a multispecies probiotic supplement to improve quality of life (QoL) in adults with seasonal allergic rhinitis (AR) and reduce the use of AR symptom relieving medication. This study aimed to confirm these early phase findings in a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial. Methods: Individuals, aged 18-65 years, with a minimum 2-year history of AR, moderate-to-severe AR symptoms, and a positive radio-allergosorbent test to Bermuda (Couch) Grass were randomized to receive either a multispecies probiotic sup

Health-related quality of life in children at the diagnosis of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a bilateral, chronic, allergic condition mostly affecting children. Clinical evaluations may not necessarily reflect the impact of the disease on the patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We aimed to evaluate HRQoL in children at VKC diagnosis and to analyze correlations between HRQoL and clinical and laboratory variables. METHODS: We studied 5- to 12-year-old patients with VKC. Data on clinical history, instrumental eye evaluations, blood examinations, and visual analog scale (VAS) for the subjective symptoms were collected. HRQoL

Surgical debridement of corneal shield ulcers in pediatric patients: two case reports and a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Ocular allergy is a common disease, especially in the pediatric population, with unpleasant and long-term consequences, including corneal complications and decreased visual acuity. This study reports two cases of corneal shield ulcer due to vernal keratoconjunctivitis, with good results of surgical debridement performed after failure of long-term clinical treatment. Furthermore, this study highlights that this therapeutic approach, although less common, is efficient in treating refractory cases that cause suffering in pediatric patients. CASE PRESENTATION: The first patient was a

Allergic eye disease.

Ocular allergy is one of the most common conditions encountered by pediatricians and ophthalmologists and is characterized by bilateral injection with itching as the predominant symptom. Risk factors include history of atopy (asthma, eczema, seasonal allergies). Basic and clinical research have provided insight into the immunologic mechanisms, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and pharmacologicmanagement of this condition. New pharmacologic agents have improved the efficacy and safety of ocularallergy treatment. This article discusses the classification of ocular allergy diagnosis

Managing a child with an external ocular disease.

Children are affected by some common external diseases, including allergic conjunctivitis and blepharokeratoconjunctivitis. This workshop aims to familiarize readers with the clinical features of each along with common presentations and to discuss strategies for managing these conditions, with emphasis on newer drugs and therapies. The other group of external diseases that commonly present in children comprises persistent punctate erosions and persistent epithelial defects. Etiology is varied, and making the correct diagnosis requires a systematic approach with close inspection of the microenv

Roles of T-cells in the development of allergic conjunctival diseases.

Massive infiltration of eosinophils is the typical histopathologic feature of severe forms of allergic conjunctival diseases (ACDs) such as vernal keratoconjunctivitis. Although ACD is an antigen (Ag)-specific disease, eosinophils lack Ag-specific receptors. Therefore, my group studied the likely roles of immunocompetent cells bearing Ag-specific receptors in inducing conjunctival eosinophil infiltration in ACDs. To induce experimental conjunctivitis (EC), Brown Norway rats and C57BL/6 and Balb/c mice were passively immunized by the transfer of Ag-specific or primed IgE, splenocytes, or purifi

Suppression of macrophage infiltration into the conjunctiva by clodronate liposomes in experimental immune-mediated blepharoconjunctivitis.

Macrophages infiltrate the conjunctiva in severe cases of allergic conjunctivitis (AC) such as atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC). We established experimental immune-mediated blepharoconjunctivitis (EC) in Brown Norway (BN) rats as a model for severe types of AC. We investigated whether macrophage infiltration in the conjunctiva in this EC model is inhibited by clodronate liposomes (CL2MDP-lip). The numbers of ED1-positive but not ED2-positive macrophages in the conjunctivas were increased by the induction of EC. Subconjunctival injection of CL2MDP-lip decreased the number of ED2-positive but n

Videokeratography findings in children with vernal keratoconjunctivitis versus those of healthy children.

PURPOSE: To determine videokeratographic topography of eyes with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and to assess whether the severity of the VKC is related to the presence of changes compatible with keratoconus. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-six persons aged 6 to 21 years: 40 patients with VKC and 36 healthy controls. DESIGN: A comparative, observational case series. METHODS: We examined 76 persons, of whom 40 were patients with VKC and 36 were control subjects, and compared the outcomes of videokeratography (VKG) patterns (EyeSys Laboratories, Houston, TX), numerical corneal indices, and spherical

[Treatment of vernal conjunctivitis with aspirin].

The authors have made a study on 67 cases of vernal keratoconjunctivitis during 4 years (1984-1988). These cases were treated by aspirin by oral route, at the rate of 25 to 50 mg/kg. Aspirin and corticoïds make functional signs disappear and make clinical signs decrease. The efficacy of aspirin is better than the efficacy of corticoïds as far as side-effects as extension of the bull period are concerned.

Tear lysozyme and lactoferrin levels in giant papillary conjunctivitis and vernal conjunctivitis.

We measured tear lysozyme by a radial immunodiffusion assay in patients with contact lens induced giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) and in patients with vernal conjunctivitis (VC). The VC and GPC patients had normal levels of tear lysozyme when compared to control individuals who did not have eye disease and to normal individuals who wore contact lenses without difficulty. In contrast, the tear concentration of lactoferrin (another important tear protein produced by the lacrimal glands) was reduced both in VC and GPC patients. Normal levels of tear lysozyme in the presence of reduced tear c

Acidic Mammalian chitinase and the eye: implications for ocular inflammatory diseases.

Chitinases have an important role in the defense of organisms against chitin-containing parasites. An acidic mammalian chitinase (AMCase) has been detected in epithelial cells in lung tissue samples taken from patients with asthma as well as in conjunctival epithelium of patients with inflammatory ocular diseases. Particularly, elevated AMCase activity has been observed in ocular tissues of patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis, seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, and in patients affected by dry eye syndrome. This enzyme is induced via a T(H)2-specific, IL-13-dependent pathway. AMCase may th
