The role of laparoscopic surgery in patients presenting with acute cholecystitis remains controversial. From September 1989 through August 1992, a total of 720 patients underwent cholecystectomy. Ninety-six were unplanned admissions with a clinical diagnosis of acute cholecystitis. Laparoscopic surgery was attempted in 83 patients. BACKGROUND: A community surgery group was reviewed for 1 year after completion of a laparoscopic colon surgery mentoring program.
METHODS: A formal mentoring protocol had been established between a university center and two surgeons at a community hospital. Over 18 months, concluding August 2007, surgeons were mentored and telementored through 20 laparoscopic colon resections in their local setting.
