Nonparasitic cysts of the spleen are classified as primary or epithelial cysts if their inner surface has a cellular lining. Depending upon the pattern of the inner surface cell layer, the primary splenic cysts are divided into mesothelial or epidermoid subtypes. In order to study their pathogenesis, five epithelial splenic cysts (two with mesothelial lining, and three with foci of stratified squamous epithelium) were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy and by immunohistochemistry. In places, the squamous epithelium was continuous with a flattened mesothelial layer. F

A case is presented of an adult chylous cyst of the mesentery that was preoperatively diagnosed to be a pancreatic cystadenoma. A 66-year-old asymptomatic male was followed up for 15 months under the diagnosis of a benign pancreatic cyst. On October 1997, computed tomography showed a 45 x 40 mm cystic mass in the upper abdomen which came in contact with the pancreas. Endoscopic ultrasonography revealed a multilocular mass with a 7 x 4 mm elevated lesion. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography revealed the cystic mass to be unrelated to th

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic parasitic infection predominantly caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. It remains endemic across various regions globally. In nearly 90% of cases, hydatid cysts develop in the liver and lungs; however, other organs, including the spleen, may rarely be affected, particularly in regions with high disease prevalence. A 15-year-old female patient was referred to our pediatric surgery emergency department with a complaint of a splenic cystic mass. The patient had a history of previous surgery for a hepatic hydatid cyst. Clinical evaluation confirmed the diag

BACKGROUND: Esophageal cysts are relatively rare in clinical practice, with most of the literature comprising case reports. Esophageal cysts protruding into the thyroid gland are easily misdiagnosed as thyroid tumors. No such cases have been reported so far.
CASE SUMMARY: This article reports the case of a 31-year-old adult male diagnosed with thyroid nodules before admission. The patient underwent left thyroidectomy and isthmusectomy. During the surgery, esophageal cysts were identified in the esophageal muscle and thyroid glands. The pathology results confirmed a nodular goiter combined wit

Arachnoid cysts are congenital benign intracranial collections of cerebrospinal fluid. Most arachnoid cysts are small and asymptomatic. They are usually located in the temporal fossa. Classically described complications result from compression of adjacent structures and include neurologic involvement, headaches and seizures. There are few cases of arachnoid cysts with ophthalmic manifestations reported in the literature. We describe two pediatric cases of arachnoid cyst with ocular complications. A 12-month-old girl with a history of acquired nystagmus and enlarged head circumference was refer

PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of percutaneous treatment of liver hydatid cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-one patients (19 female patients and 12 male patients; age range, 8-78 years; mean age, 41 years) with 57 liver hydatid cysts underwent percutaneous treatment. The cysts were treated with hypertonic saline (15% NaCl) and/or absolute alcohol. Sonographic and/or fluoroscopic guidance was used.
RESULTS: Repeated sonography revealed a gradual decrease in cyst size. Volume reduction was 18%-99% (mean, 83%). With the disappearance of the fluid component, pseudotumor appe

Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign, expansile, lytic bone lesions that behave in a locally aggressive manner. Although radiography and computed tomography (CT) can detect the lesion, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is ideal for the demonstration of characteristic fluid-fluid levels, extent, and margins. Treatment typically consists of open surgical curettage with the addition of local adjuvants and bone grafting. Residual or recurring lesions may be treated using percutaneous cryoablation. Although CT guidance is often employed for image guidance, visualization and targeting of smaller clusters

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a major, inherited nephropathy affecting over 1:1000 of the worldwide population. It is a systemic condition with frequent hepatic and cardiovascular manifestations in addition to the progressive development of fluid-filled cysts from the tubules and collecting ducts of affected kidneys. The pathogenesis of cyst formation is currently thought to involve increased proliferation of epithelial cells, mild dedifferentiation, and fluid accumulation. In the past decade, study of ADPKD led to the discovery of a unique family of highly complex pr

PURPOSE: To examine the prevalence and distribution of fluid within a cohort of eyes with acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) using optical coherence tomography (OCT).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patient records and OCT imaging. Patients presenting with acute CRAO or AION who had available macular OCT imaging and no co-morbidities known to cause macular fluid were included in the analysis. Baseline characteristics, visual acuity (VA), and fluid presence and distribution among the retinal layers were recorded.

Synovial cysts of the pulp of the little finger in three elderly patients were shown by arthrography to arise from leakage of synovial fluid from the wrist joint into the ulnar bursa and thence into the flexor synovial sheath in the digit. Distant as well as local sources of the contents of synovial cysts should be considered when the local anatomy permits communication between a degenerate joint and an adjacent tendon sheath.

Simple renal cysts are acquired kidney lesion that are described as spherical, smoothed surfaced, with a serous, sub-yellow content. They are generally considered as a harmless anomaly, however cases of complicated renal cysts have been reported. We present a case of an enormous renal cyst (the biggest ever described) containing more than 25 L of fluid mimicking ascites, complicated with controlateral displacement of ipsilateral functional kidney and intra-abdominal organs, renal cell carcinoma and hypertension. Particular attention is carried in the analysis of the literature about different

The gross and histological appearance of subchondral bone cysts in six Thoroughbred or partbred horses is described. The lesions were all situated in the centre of the medial femoral condyle and were not associated with any other damage to the articular surface of the femorotibial or femoropatellar joints. In three cases the cysts were unilateral but had an early non-cystic lesion present in the opposite stifle. All the cysts had a narrow channel at their distal extremity which communicated with the femorotibial joint. The more recently developed ones were fluid filled and contained fibrous st

We report a case of leakage of irrigation fluid into the extra-articular soft tissue, due to rupture of a Baker's cyst during arthroscopy of the knee joint. A four-quadrant fasciotomy of the calf musculature was performed to prevent the devasting ischemic complications of an imminent compartment syndrome. A survey of the literature reveals no consensus regarding the treatment of such complications. On the contrary, some authors recommend avoiding fasciotomy and waiting for spontaneous reabsorption of the irrigation fluid.

A 60-year-old female patient presented to our clinic with complaints of abdominal distention. The rapid accumulation of fluid was originally thought to be ascites, based on ultrasonographic examination. The cause, however, was ultimately determined to be a borderline malignant giant ovarian cyst. Several processes can mimick ascites: bladder distention or diverticulum, hydronephrosis, pancreatic pseudocysts, and large uterine or ovarian tumors. For this reason, clinicians must consider processes other than ascites in the differential diagnosis of large abdominal fluid accumulation.

A 6-month-old, intact female Boxer presented with ongoing dyspnea, nasal congestion, cardiac arrhythmias, stertor, and syncope. A CT assessment of the head, neck, thorax, and abdomen revealed a fluid to soft tissue attenuating mass with an incomplete mineralized rim centered on the soft tissue ventral to the right tympanic bulla. Histopathologically, epithelialization was consistent with a dermoid cyst. The severe degree of mass effect caused by this abnormally and undocumented ossified structure in vital cranial cervical organs causes more systemic complications than traditional dermoid cysts

BACKGROUND: Intracranial arachnoid cysts are common, cerebrospinal fluid-filled, innocent lesions that are usually detected incidentally on brain imaging. They may rupture and complicate due to subdural hematoma or hygroma after minor trauma. Authors present two cases of ruptured middle cranial fossa arachnoid cysts in adolescent (12-year-old and 15-year-old) Afghan boys presenting with subdural hygroma after minor trauma.
CONCLUSION: Imaging work-up is necessary for symptomatic patients following minor head trauma as incidentally detected ruptured intracranial arachnoid cysts can be responsi

Epidermoid cysts comprise less than 1% of intraspinal tumors. They can be congenital, frequently associated with other spinal malformations, or iatrogenic, resulting from the implantation of epidermal cells within the spinal canal during the execution of a variety of procedures such as spinal puncture. At MR imaging epidermoid tumors can mimic cystic lesions with fluid content such as arachnoid cysts. DWI can help obtain a correct diagnosis. We describe a case of iatrogenic lumbar epidermoid cyst with DWI findings in a young woman who had undergone epidural anesthesia for Cesarean section thre
