Acceptability and efficacy of a smartphone application intervention for mental health care based on interpersonal psychotherapy for improving depression symptoms in prenatal women: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression is a predominant and serious condition that adversely affects prenatal and postpartum women and their children. Prenatal depression is a notable predictor of postpartum depression, highlighting the need for mental health care during pregnancy. Therefore, we developed an innovative smartphone application based on interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) to improve depressive symptoms in women in the perinatal period (i.e., from pregnancy through the first year postpartum). Here, we present a randomized controlled trial (RCT) protocol to investigate the potential of thi

Postpartum Outcomes and Formal Mindfulness Practice in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Perinatal Women.

Anxiety is common during pregnancy and associated with poorer outcomes for mother and child. Our single-arm pilot study of an eight-week Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) intervention for pregnant women with elevated anxiety showed significant pre- to post-intervention improvements in anxiety, depression, worry, mindfulness, and self-compassion. It remains unclear whether these improvements are maintained post-partum and whether amount of formal mindfulness practice is correlated with outcomes. The current study examined whether 1) improvements in psychosocial outcomes were maintained

Mexican-American adolescents' perceptions about causes of perinatal depression, self-help strategies, and how to obtain mental health information.

PROBLEM: Perinatal depression is a public health concern as it is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Previous studies have recommended further examination of perinatal depression among Mexican-American adolescents. Thus, the purpose of this study was to understand pregnant and postpartum Mexican-American adolescents' knowledge and beliefs concerning perinatal depression. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study examined perceptions about the causes of perinatal depression, self-help strategies, and how to obtain mental health information. Data were analyzed using deductive and ind

The Impact of Perinatal Depression on Children's Social-Emotional Development: A Longitudinal Study.

Objectives This longitudinal population study aimed to investigate if maternal depression at different time points during the perinatal period impacts children's social-emotional development at 2 years of age. Methods Participants were women (n = 1235) who gave birth at Akershus University Hospital in Norway. Maternal depressive symptoms were assessed by using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at pregnancy week 32 and at 8 weeks and 2 years postpartum, whereas children's social-emotional development at the age of 2 years was assessed by using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social-Em

Understanding links between maternal perinatal posttraumatic stress symptoms and infant socioemotional and physical health.

Maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are associated with adverse consequences for older children, but very few studies have examined links between perinatal maternal PTSS and infant outcomes. Trauma exposure and psychopathology, including PTSS, is often heightened for women during pregnancy through 1 year postpartum. Therefore, the perinatal period may be a critical time for understanding the risk maternal PTSS and other mental health factors pose to the socioemotional and physical health of infants. The present study explored the relation between maternal PTSS and infant socioemotion

Effects of a family-centered empowerment intervention on role adaptation and depressive symptoms in high-risk primigravidas and their partners.

BACKGROUND: First-time parenthood requires substantial role adjustment and may challenge mental health, particularly in families experiencing medically high-risk pregnancies. Evidence is limited on whether empowerment-oriented dyadic interventions can improve parental role adaptation and depressive symptoms among high-risk primigravidas and their partners. AIM: To evaluate the effects of an empowerment-oriented dyadic intervention on parental role adaptation and depressive symptoms among high-risk primigravidas and their partners. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in the m

Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of maternity blues among postpartum mothers: a multi-facility prospective cohort in rural Southwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Maternity blues (MBs) are mild and self-limiting depressive symptoms that occur within the first weeks postpartum. However, failure to identify and manage affected mothers can lead to maternal emotional and cognitive impairment, disrupt infant care, and increase the risk of postpartum depression (PPD), infanticide, or suicide. The average prevalence of maternity blues in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is 39%, with 10–15% of affected mothers progressing to PPD. Therefore, providing timely support and management to mothers experiencing maternity blues is crucial to prevent this progression

Perinatal depression influences on infant negative affectivity: timing, severity, and co-morbid anxiety.

Accumulating evidence suggests that antenatal depression predicts infants' negative affectivity, albeit with variable effect sizes. With a prospective longitudinal design, we sought to explain that variability by addressing questions about timing of the depression across pregnancy and the early postpartum, the role of high symptom levels relative to diagnosed depression, comorbidity with anxiety, and the potential mediating role of neuroendocrine functioning. Primiparous women (n=77) with histories of depression prior to pregnancy were assessed for cortisol levels monthly beginning by mid-preg

A mixed-methods approach to understanding barriers to postpartum retention in care among low-income, HIV-infected women.

Optimal retention in HIV care postpartum is necessary to benefit the health and wellbeing of mothers and their infants. However, postpartum retention in HIV care among low-income women is suboptimal, particularly in the Southern United States. A mixed-methods study was conducted to identify factors associated with postpartum retention in care among HIV-infected women. Participants (n=35) were recruited during pregnancy at two county clinics and completed self-report demographic and psychosocial surveys. Twenty-two women who returned for a postpartum appointment completed a semi-structured inte

Unravelling symptom-specific polygenic effects on maternal mental health during the perinatal period and postpartum.

BACKGROUND: While genetic factors are important influences on maternal mental health, few studies have used symptom-level analyses to examine how genetic liability is related to the experience of specific mental health problems in mothers. A symptom-level approach can account for disorder heterogeneity and delineate key associations between genetic liabilities and mental health. METHODS: Three waves of data (30 weeks of gestation, 6 and 18 months postpartum) from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) were used to assess item-level associations between genetic liabilities

Placentophagy among women planning community births in the United States: Frequency, rationale, and associated neonatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Limited systematic research on maternal placentophagy is available to maternity care providers whose clients/patients may be considering this increasingly popular practice. Our purpose was to characterize the practice of placentophagy and its attendant neonatal outcomes among a large sample of women in the United States. METHODS: We used a medical records-based data set (n = 23 242) containing pregnancy, birth, and postpartum information for women who planned community births. We used logistic regression to determine demographic and clinical predictors of placentophagy. Finally, w

Mapping the course of fear of childbirth: A structured data-informed approach to identifying key predictors and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Up to 15% of pregnant women experience fear of childbirth, which can affect both mother and infant. Previous studies were mostly cross-sectional and examined only a limited set of predictors or outcomes. The present study assessed a broad range of predictors and outcomes of individual differences in baseline and rate of change of fear of childbirth in a comprehensive model, capturing fluctuations in fear of childbirth throughout pregnancy. METHODS: Analyses were performed in 2617 women from the Brabant Study. Using a structured data-informed approach, the dataset was split into a
