Urea is a hygroscopic molecule (capable of absorbing water) present in the epidermis as a component of the natural moisturizing factor (NMF) and is essential for the adequate hydration and integrity of the stratum corneum. Urea improves skin barrier function including antimicrobial defense by regulating gene expression in keratinocytes relevant for their differentiation and antimicrobial peptide production. It also plays a fundamental role in regulating keratinocyte proliferation. One of the first uses of urea in modern medicine was the topical treatment of wounds due to its proteolytic and an

OBJECTIVE: To show the association between prolonged use of topical corticosteroids and the development of CS.

BACKGROUND: Skin surface colonization starts after birth. It is thought that early microbial colonization affects the development of skin immune functions. Although Malassezia is the predominant fungus in the skin microbiota in healthy individuals, the microorganism is associated with atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis. In the present study, transmission of skin microbiota from mothers to their neonates was elucidated using the Malassezia microbiota as an indicator.
METHODS: Temporal changes in the level of Malassezia colonization of the skin from 27 neonates and mothers were investi

A prospective study was conducted for 13 months to determine the prevalence of skin disease in AIDS patients in the Lome teaching hospital. 99 of the 120 AIDS patients (75 males, 49 females) examined during this period had skin diseases (82.5% of the cases). This prevalence was 59.99% during 1 to 3 months of AIDS evolution, 81.77% during 4 to 6 months, and 100% after 6 months. The principal skin diseases were: pruritic papular eruption (33.33%), oral candidiasis (25%), herpes zoster (16.16%), hair dystrophies (13.13%), xeroderma (14.60%), furuncle (10%), seborrheic dermatitis (6.66%), Kaposi's

BACKGROUND: Periorbital dermatoses are very common dermatological disorders which pose a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for the treating dermatologist due to the similarity of symptoms in this area.
AIMS: To study the spectrum of periorbital dermatoses and to assess the association of systemic diseases with periorbital dermatoses.
METHODS: This was a hospital based descriptive study done on 250 consecutive patients irrespective of their age and sex who attended the Dermatology out patient department (OPD), with dermatological conditions pertaining to the periorbital area over a period

Moisturizer is a major component of basic daily skin care, particularly in presence of epidermal barrier alteration and reduced epidermal water content. It is an important part of a dermatologist's strategy to maintain skin health as well as treating various dermatoses which co-exist with skin dryness and are linked to impaired skin barrier function, such as in atopic disorders as well as other types of dermatitis. Mastering the knowledge regarding mechanism of action, application, dosage, adverse effects as well as specific clinical usage of moisturizers is a must for a dermatologist in order

Histopathology submissions from 28 goats with dermatological disease were identified in an archival search of pathology files. Microscopic sections of skin biopsy specimens were examined for the presence of Malassezia spp. organisms. Six cases with many Malassezia yeasts were identified histopathologically. Based on the extent of clinical disease, three cases were regarded as localized and three were generalized infections. Clinical findings included alopecia with dry seborrhoea (four cases), greasy seborrhoea (one case), and no clinical findings specific to localized Malassezia infection when

Warts, Hypogammaglobulinemia, Infections, and Myelokathexis (WHIM) syndrome is a rare immunodeficiency caused by gain-of-function mutations in the chemokine receptor CXCR4. While human papillomavirus (HPV) skin infection (warts) is the dermatological hallmark of the disease, individuals with WHIM have high rates of other skin manifestations that may aid early diagnosis and management. This study was a retrospective review of medical records from a United States National Institutes of Health natural history cohort of patients with WHIM syndrome seen between 2005 and 2024, including a cross-sect

There is a paucity of data on the epidemiology of dermatologic disease in populations with skin of color. Our objective was to compare the most common diagnoses for which patients of various racial and ethnic groups were treated at a hospital-based dermatology faculty practice. We reviewed the diagnosis codes of 1412 patient visits from August 2004 through July 2005 at the Skin of Color Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, in New York. New York, in whom race and ethnicity were recorded. The most common diagnoses observed during dermatologic visits by black and white patients were co
