STUDY OBJECTIVE: To compare oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate (OTFC) with IM meperidine, promethazine, and chlorpromazine (MPC) for conscious sedation of children.
METHODS: This prospective, randomized, single-blinded study involved a convenience sample of 40 children, 3 to 8 years of age, who presented to an urban pediatric emergency department and required laceration repair. Patients were premedicated with either OTFC (10 to 15 micrograms/kg) and a mock injection or intramuscular MPC (2 mg/kg meperidine, .5 mg/kg promethazine, and .5 mg/kg chlorpromazine) followed by a placebo lozenge.

BACKGROUND: Most head and neck melanomas occur on the face, with the cheek being the most frequently affected site. So far, small numbers of researches on cheek melanomas have yielded insufficient and controversial results. In this trial, we aimed to define the histopathological and clinical features specific to cheek melanomas and to compare them with other head and neck melanomas by using a large group of patients from a single tertiary center.

Fifty-eight patients with 119 nodular (2 mm or more in thickness) basal cell carcinomas successfully treated with photodynamic therapy were included in this 1-year follow-up study. The initial cure rate at 3-6 months was 92% after photodynamic therapy, which included an initial debulking procedure and topical application of dimethylsulphoxide in order to enhance penetration of 5-aminolevulinic acid (20% in cream) to which the lesions were exposed for 3 h prior to exposure to light.
