Background Expanded dengue syndrome represents a severe and atypical spectrum of dengue virus infection characterized by multisystem involvement beyond classic manifestations. While mild gastrointestinal symptoms are common in classic dengue, expanded dengue syndrome may present with clinically significant digestive organ involvement, including hepatitis, fulminant hepatic failure, pancreatitis, and acute acalculous cholecystitis. These manifestations often resemble primary gastrointestinal diseases, leading to diagnostic delays and inappropriate management. Despite increasing recognition, the

Autoinflammatory diseases are characterized by dysregulation of the innate immune system. This article provides an updated overview of autoinflammatory diseases with gastrointestinal manifestations and outlines the clinical situations in which gastroenterologists should consider these conditions. The most prevalent form worldwide is familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), which is associated with mutations in the MEFV (MEditerranean FeVer) gene and presents with recurrent episodes of serositis, primarily peritonitis, accompanied by systemic inflammation. From a biological standpoint, a peripheral

INTRODUCTION: Mast cells (MCs) are immune cells derived from hematopoietic cluster of differentiation (CD)34+ and CD117+ precursors that complete their maturation in peripheral tissues such as the connective and mucosal layers, perivascular and perineural regions, and secondary lymphoid organs, where they play essential roles in regulating immune responses. The MC's dual role as both an effector and regulator of angiogenesis makes it a valuable indicator of tumor aggressiveness and a potential therapeutic target in digestive malignancies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 41 cases of digestive tumors wi

The digestive system is essential for nutrient absorption, processing, and waste elimination. The expression of many genes and physiological processes within this system exhibits a 24-h rhythmicity. However, modern lifestyle factors, such as jet lag, shift work, and irregular eating patterns, significantly disrupt these rhythms, triggering various stress responses and contributing to numerous digestive disorders. Here, we focus on emerging studies on noncanonical clock regulators involved in stress responses, integrate these novel findings into the established model of the core circadian clock

Tryptophan (Trp) is an essential amino acid that must be acquired exclusively through dietary intake. The metabolism of tryptophan plays a critical role in maintaining immune homeostasis and tolerance, as well as in preventing excessive inflammatory responses. Tryptophan-2,3-dioxygenase (TDO2) is a tetrameric heme protein and serves as one of the pivotal rate-limiting enzymes in the first step of tryptophan metabolism. Dysregulation of TDO2 expression has been observed in various digestive system diseases, encompassing those related to the oral cavity, esophagus, liver, stomach, pancreas, and

PANoptosis, a newly defined, multifaceted programmed cell death (PCD) pathway, integrates key features of pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis. It is orchestrated by multiprotein complexes called PANoptosomes (ZBP1-, AIM2-, RIPK1-, and NLRP12-PANoptosomes), which assemble via domain interactions in response to specific pathogen- or damage-associated signals. This integrated pathway plays crucial roles in maintaining tissue homeostasis by eliminating infected and damaged cells and provides potent innate immune defence through the coordinated release of inflammatory cytokines and damage-associ

Twenty-four male piglets were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments, with increasing Tetraselmis sp. incorporation levels (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%). Following a 4-day adaptation period to metabolic cages, the animals were used in a 2-week digestibility trial and slaughtered for digestive tract measurements and sampling. The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), N balance, small intestine digesta viscosity and histomorphology, and hindgut digesta volatile fatty acid (VFA) profile were determined. Polynomial contrasts were employed to examine linear and quadratic effects of Tetraselmis

The search for sustainable energy sources has become more urgent due to the high level of pollution caused by petroleum-based products. Digestate, a byproduct of the digestion of organic waste generated during biomethane production, can be used as a biofertilizer. This compound enriches the soil and promotes the proliferation of nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which benefits sustainable agriculture. This study assessed the biofertilizer potential of digestates from two anaerobic digesters (pilot and laboratory scale) using swine carcasses and effluent. Physicochemical analyses and microbial diversit…

Emerging evidence highlights the importance of gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD). While inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been linked to PD, the association with other GI conditions remains unclear. This study analyzed data from 501,483 participants, including 907 PD cases. Cox models revealed that digestive diseases were significantly associated with an increased PD risk (HR = 1.43). Eleven digestive diseases were linked to PD, with lifestyle factors such as sleep patterns and diet reducing PD risk. Notably, interactions between Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Starch is an important energy source for humans. Starch escaping digestion in the small intestine will transit to the colon to be fermented by gut microbes. Many gut microbes express α-amylases that can degrade soluble starch, but only a few are able to degrade intrinsic resistant starch (RS), which is insoluble and highly resistant to digestion (≥80% RS). We studied the in vitro fermentability of eight retrograded starches (RS-3 preparations) differing in rapidly digestible starch content (≥70%, 35-50%, ≤15%) by a pooled adult faecal inoculum and found that fermentability depends on the diges…

INTRODUCTION: Visual Analysis of Swallowing Efficiency and Safety (VASES) and Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity for Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (DIGEST-FEES) are two complimentary methods for assessing swallowing during FEES. Whereas VASES is intended to facilitate trial-level ratings of pharyngeal residue, penetration, and aspiration, DIGEST-FEES is intended to facilitate protocol-level impairment grades of swallowing safety and efficiency. The aim of this study was to assess the validity of using VASES to derive DIGEST-FEES impairment grades.
METHODS: DIGEST-FEES

Previous studies have linked the microbiome of distinct body habitats to obesity and infertility; however, the often-divergent results observed have left the role of the so-called "second genome" in obese infertile patients incompletely explored. Here, we present a prospective observational multicenter study of oral, gut, endometrial, and vaginal microbiota of infertile patients classified according to BMI. Patients collected saliva/fecal samples, while vaginal/endometrial fluid samples were collected in the clinic. Total bacterial DNA was extracted, and microbiota profiles were analyzed by 16

Despite the increasing interest in studying the gut mycobiota of dogs, the association between fungal colonization and the development of digestive disorders in this species remains largely understudied. On the other hand, the high prevalence of antifungal-resistant yeasts detected in previous studies in samples from animals represents a major threat to public health. We analyzed the presence of culturable yeasts in 112 rectal swab samples obtained from dogs with digestive disorders attended in a veterinary teaching hospital. Our results revealed that Malassezia pachydermatis was frequently is
