Memory deficits in the transgenic rat model of Huntington's disease.

Memory deficits are common in patients with Huntington's disease (HD) and have a substantial impact on the quality of life of patients and their relatives. A good model resembling the human memory deficits is needed for research purposes. In this study we investigated the memory function of the transgenic rat model of Huntington's disease (tgHD) in the object location (OLT) and the object recognition task (ORT). Several studies have shown that the recent developed tgHD rat model resembles the human phenotype of HD. Impairments of spatial and object recognition memory in the OLT and ORT, howeve

Diminished orientation-specific surround suppression of visual processing in schizophrenia.

Visual perception of a stimulus is a function of the visual context in which it is displayed. Surround suppression is a specific form of contextual modulation whereby the perceived contrast of a center stimulus is decreased by a high-contrast surround. Recent studies have demonstrated that individuals with schizophrenia are less prone to visual contextual effects, suggesting impairments in cortical lateral connectivity. We tested whether altered contextual modulation in schizophrenia is stimulus orientation selective. Participants viewed an annulus consisting of contrast-reversing sinusoidal g

A problem with auditory processing?

Recent studies have found associations between auditory processing deficits and language disorders such as dyslexia; but whether the former cause the latter, or simply co-occur with them, is still an open question.

Detection of Microbehavior Intervals for Predicting Mental Health: Clinically Relevant and Advanced Multimodal Temporal Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) face sustained psychological demands that place them at heightened risk for burnout and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, assessing psychological distress in this population remains challenging because of stigma, underreporting, and the limitations of self-report tools. Although nonverbal behaviors such as facial expressions and gaze hold diagnostic promise, most approaches overlook the fine-grained, temporal fluctuations in these signals. In this study, we focused on microbehavior intervals-brief, involuntary changes in multimodal nonverbal

The role of the angular gyrus in memory for encoded perspective and subjective re-experiencing.

Remembering personal events typically involves reconstructing our original first-person perspective, often accompanied by a vivid sense of re-experiencing the past. The Angular Gyrus (AnG) has been implicated in both perspective reconstruction and subjective memory experience, yet its specific contribution remains unclear. We investigated the role of the AnG across three studies using a behavioural paradigm in which healthy adults (aged 18-35) encoded a naturalistic video. At retrieval, participants judged whether test images matched their original perspective and rated subjective aspects of t

Different time courses of maturation for learning and generalization following auditory training in children.

OBJECTIVE: We recently demonstrated that learning abilities among school-age children vary following frequency discrimination (FD) training, with some exhibiting mature adult-like learning while others performing poorly (non-adult-like learners). This study tested the hypothesis that children's post-training generalisation is related to their learning maturity. Additionally, it investigated how training duration influences children's generalisation, considering the observed decrease with increased training in adults. DESIGN: Generalisation to the untrained ear and untrained 2000 Hz frequency

Effect of task difficulty on blood-oxygen-level-dependent signal: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study in a motion discrimination task.

There is much evidence that neural activity in the human brain is modulated by task difficulty, particularly in visual, frontal, and parietal cortices. However, some basic psychophysical tasks in visual perception do not give rise to this expected effect, at least not in the visual cortex. In the current study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to record brain activity while systematically manipulating task difficulty in a motion discrimination task, by varying the angular difference between the motion direction of random dots and a reference direction. We used both a blocke

Supralinear and Supramodal Integration of Visual and Tactile Signals in Rats: Psychophysics and Neuronal Mechanisms.

To better understand how object recognition can be triggered independently of the sensory channel through which information is acquired, we devised a task in which rats judged the orientation of a raised, black and white grating. They learned to recognize two categories of orientation: 0° ± 45° ("horizontal") and 90° ± 45° ("vertical"). Each trial required a visual (V), a tactile (T), or a visual-tactile (VT) discrimination; VT performance was better than that predicted by optimal linear combination of V and T signals, indicating synergy between sensory channels. We examined posterior parietal

Is there a generalized timing impairment in Autism Spectrum Disorders across time scales and paradigms?

Individuals with ASD have abnormal motor and perceptual functions that do not currently form diagnostic criteria of ASD, but nevertheless may affect everyday behaviour. Temporal processing seems to be one of such non-diagnostic yet impaired domains, although the lack of systematic studies testing different aspects of timing in the same sample of participants prevents a conclusive assessment of whether there is a generalized temporal deficit in ASD associated with diagnostic symptoms. 17 children diagnosed with ASD and 18 typically developing age- and IQ-matched controls carried out a set of mo

Spatial imagery relies on a sensory independent, though sensory sensitive, functional organization within the parietal cortex: a fMRI study of angle discrimination in sighted and congenitally blind individuals.

Although vision offers distinctive information to space representation, individuals who lack vision since birth often show perceptual and representational skills comparable to those found in sighted individuals. However, congenitally blind individuals may result in impaired spatial analysis, when engaging in 'visual' spatial features (e.g., perspective or angle representation) or complex spatial mental abilities. In the present study, we measured behavioral and brain responses using functional magnetic resonance imaging in sighted and congenitally blind individuals during spatial imagery based

Multisensory Integration of Visual and Vestibular Signals Improves Heading Discrimination in the Presence of a Moving Object.

UNLABELLED: Humans and animals are fairly accurate in judging their direction of self-motion (i.e., heading) from optic flow when moving through a stationary environment. However, an object moving independently in the world alters the optic flow field and may bias heading perception if the visual system cannot dissociate object motion from self-motion. We investigated whether adding vestibular self-motion signals to optic flow enhances the accuracy of heading judgments in the presence of a moving object. Macaque monkeys were trained to report their heading (leftward or rightward relative to st

Influence of Tinnitus on Auditory Spectral and Temporal Resolution and Speech Perception in Tinnitus Patients.

UNLABELLED: Although cochlear damage is believed to trigger the perception of tinnitus in the central auditory system, its pathophysiological mechanism is still unclear. We aimed to investigate the pathophysiology of tinnitus using psychoacoustic assessments of auditory spectral and temporal resolution and speech perception in noise. Human subjects with tinnitus and symmetric hearing thresholds were divided into three groups: nine unilateral tinnitus subjects with normal hearing thresholds (Group 1), 12 unilateral tinnitus subjects with hearing loss (HL; Group 2), and nine bilateral tinnitus s

Sweet and bitter taste in the brain of awake behaving animals.

Taste is responsible for evaluating the nutritious content of food, guiding essential appetitive behaviours, preventing the ingestion of toxic substances, and helping to ensure the maintenance of a healthy diet. Sweet and bitter are two of the most salient sensory percepts for humans and other animals; sweet taste allows the identification of energy-rich nutrients whereas bitter warns against the intake of potentially noxious chemicals. In mammals, information from taste receptor cells in the tongue is transmitted through multiple neural stations to the primary gustatory cortex in the brain. R

Neural representations of confidence emerge from the process of decision formation during perceptual choices.

Choice confidence represents the degree of belief that one's actions are likely to be correct or rewarding and plays a critical role in optimizing our decisions. Despite progress in understanding the neurobiology of human perceptual decision-making, little is known about the representation of confidence. Importantly, it remains unclear whether confidence forms an integral part of the decision process itself or represents a purely post-decisional signal. To address this issue we employed a paradigm whereby on some trials, prior to indicating their decision, participants could opt-out of the tas

Molecular basis for prey relocation in viperid snakes.

BACKGROUND: Vertebrate predators use a broad arsenal of behaviors and weaponry for overcoming fractious and potentially dangerous prey. A unique array of predatory strategies occur among snakes, ranging from mechanical modes of constriction and jaw-holding in non-venomous snakes, to a chemical means, venom, for quickly dispatching prey. However, even among venomous snakes, different prey handling strategies are utilized, varying from the strike-and-hold behaviors exhibited by highly toxic elapid snakes to the rapid strike-and-release envenomation seen in viperid snakes. For vipers, this mode o

Using multisensory cues to facilitate air traffic management.

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we sought to investigate whether auditory and tactile cuing could be used to facilitate a complex, real-world air traffic management scenario. BACKGROUND: Auditory and tactile cuing provides an effective means of improving both the speed and accuracy of participants' performance in a variety of laboratory-based visual target detection and identification tasks. METHOD: A low-fidelity air traffic simulation task was used in which participants monitored and controlled aircraft. The participants had to ensure that the aircraft landed or exited at the correct altit

Deficit in the preattentive processing of syllabic duration and VOT in children with dyslexia.

The aim of this experiment was to examine the preattentive processing of syllables in 9-11-year-old children with dyslexia and matched controls using the Mismatch Negativity (MMN), an auditory Event-Related brain potential (ERP) related to preattentive discrimination. Children were presented with a sequence of syllables that included standards (the syllable "Ba") and deviants in vowel frequency, vowel duration and Voice Onset Time (VOT) that were either close to or far from the standard (Small and Large deviants). No between-group differences were found for frequency deviants. However, whilst

Exploring the mechanism of dishabituation.

In this study we explored elicitation and habituation of the orienting reflex (OR) in the context of indifferent and significant stimuli, particularly aiming to clarify the mechanism driving dishabituation. An in-depth analysis of the mechanisms of electrodermal habituation and dishabituation was conducted, focusing on the role of state measures as determinants of the phasic response profile. Twenty-four young adult participants completed an auditory dishabituation task while electrodermal activity was recorded. Participants listened to a series of 10 innocuous tones of the same frequency (sta

A novel device for the study of somatosensory information processing.

Current methods for applying multi-site vibratory stimuli to the skin typically involve the use of multiple, individual vibrotactile stimulators. Limitations of such an arrangement include difficulty with both positioning the stimuli as well as ensuring that stimuli are delivered in a synchronized and deliberate manner. Previously, we reported a two-site tactile stimulator that was developed in order to solve these problems (Tannan et al., 2007a). Due to both the success of that novel stimulator and the limitations that were inherent in that device, we designed and fabricated a four-site stimu
