Parental sex preference and its effects on fertility intention and contraceptive use in Calcutta.

This study investigated parental sex preference and its effects on fertility intention and contraceptive use in Calcutta. It also investigated the socioeconomic differentials of these effects. Data on 4536 married women of childbearing age came from a cross-sectional survey of slum and non-slum areas conducted in 1970. Desired numbers of sons and daughters in the slum area were 1.89 and 1.30, respectively, and in the non-slum area, 1.63 and 1.17, respectively. 35% of slum women and 30% of non-slum women wanted to have more children, and 22% of slum women and 45% of non-slum women were reported

Multidimensional associations of HbA1c with behavioural, psychosocial, and economic factors across Educational Pharmaceutical Care Interventional Program (EPCIP) timeline: a prospective, longitudinal, RCT study.

INTRODUCTION: According to real-time data from Gujarat, which has the third highest score in the country nationally (7.55%), shows that behavioral, psychological, and economic stressors are associated with elevating HbA1c levels. The current investigation of multifaceted connection within the educational pharmaceutical care interventional program (EPCIP) timeline provides important information about regional causes of inadequate glycaemic control and aids in the development of tailored diabetes management strategies. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to examine the associatio

Hierarchical Analysis of Physical Activity Determinants in Brazilian Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity during adolescence remains a major public health concern, yet its multifactorial determinants are not fully understood in low- and middle-income settings. OBJECTIVE: To identify and quantify the determinants of physical activity (PA) among Brazilian adolescents using a hierarchical logistic regression model that reflects the theoretical ordering of distal to proximal factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 856 adolescents (13-19 years). Data were obtained from the validated Brazilian Youth Risk Behavior Survey and the Brazilian Economic Cl

Understanding the "Paradox" in Black-White Alcohol Outcomes: Examining High-Effort Coping and Health Behaviors with a Focus on Black Populations and College Students.

Despite experiencing more physical health disadvantages and psychosocial stressors, Black Americans consistently report better mental health outcomes compared to White Americans-a phenomenon commonly referred to as the Black-White health paradox. Alcohol research has identified another racial paradox suggesting Black Americans are at greater risk for alcohol-related problems despite drinking less than White Americans, which is known as the Black-White alcohol paradox. While both paradoxes are well-documented, few studies have examined their potential overlap or how insights from one might info

Imidacloprid: Impact on Africanized Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) workers and honey contamination.

Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) is fundamental in the production chain, ensuring food diversity through the ecosystem service of pollination. The aim of this work was to evaluate the impact of imidacloprid, orally, topically, and by contact, on A. mellifera workers and to verify the presence of this active ingredient in honey. Toxicity levels were verified by bioassays. In bioassay 1, the levels correspond to the percentages of 100, 10, 1, 0.1, and 0.01% of the recommended concentration for field application of the commercial product Nortox® (active ingredient imidacloprid), with which

A multivariate decomposition analysis of modern contraceptive utilization among married women in the emerging region of Ethiopia (2000-2019).

Ensuring universal access to family planning services is a proven strategy to improve reproductive health as well as economic development. Assessing the trend and identifying the factors for the change in modern contraceptive utilization is crucial to design effective measures, but trend analysis was not conducted previously. Thus, this study aimed to assess the trend and determinants of modern contraceptive utilization change among married women in emerging regions of Ethiopia. This study used the 2000 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey and the 2019 Ethiopia Min Demographic and Health Sur

The critical role of the orbitofrontal cortex for regret in an economic decision-making task.

Regret affects decision-making behavior, which is mediated by a cognitive process known as counterfactual thinking in economic science. Several studies indicate that orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) plays a crucial role in decision-making behavior. However, the neural correlates of regret trait and the function of the OFC in decision-making remain unclear. In this study, we employed a typical monetary decision-making task, a modified 'Wheel of Fortune gamble' paradigm, to investigate decision-making behavior and its neural mechanism. We combined voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and task-evoked function

Testing a Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) interdisciplinary training program model for higher education systems.

INTRODUCTION: An estimated 21 million Americans meet the criteria for a substance use disorder (SUD), whereas 24% of the population engages in risky alcohol use leading to tremendous health and economic impacts (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2017). Opioid misuse is a national public health emergency, with an estimated 46,802 opioid-related deaths occurring in 2018 (National Center for Health Statistics, 2020). Despite the high prevalence of risky substance use and SUDs, preservice education related to screening for and treating SUDs in health and behavioral health

Cost-effectiveness analysis of parenting interventions for the prevention of behaviour problems in children.

BACKGROUND: Behavior problems are common among children and place a high disease and financial burden on individuals and society. Parenting interventions are commonly used to prevent such problems, but little is known about their possible longer-term economic benefits. This study modelled the longer-term cost-effectiveness of five parenting interventions delivered in a Swedish context: Comet, Connect, the Incredible Years (IY), COPE, bibliotherapy, and a waitlist control, for the prevention of persistent behavior problems. METHODS: A decision analytic model was developed and used to forecast

Influence of work organization and work environment on missed work, productivity, and use of pain medications among construction apprentices.

BACKGROUND: Construction is among the most dangerous industries. In addition to traditional hazards for workplace injury and illness, other threats to health and well-being may occur from work organization and work environment factors, including irregular employment, long commutes, long work hours, and employer policies regarding health and safety. These nontraditional hazards may affect work and health outcomes directly, or through effects on health behaviors. The cumulative impacts of both traditional and nontraditional hazards on health-related outcomes among construction workers are largel

Cows painted with zebra-like striping can avoid biting fly attack.

Experimental and comparative studies suggest that the striped coats of zebras can prevent biting fly attacks. Biting flies are serious pests of livestock that cause economic losses in animal production. We hypothesized that cows painted with black and white stripes on their body could avoid biting fly attacks and show fewer fly-repelling behaviors. Six Japanese Black cows were assigned to treatments using a 3 × 3 Latin-square design. The treatments were black-and-white painted stripes, black painted stripes, and no stripes (all-black body surface). Recorded fly-repelling behaviors were head th

Lorcaserin decreases the reinforcing effects of heroin, but not food, in rhesus monkeys.

Preclinical studies indicate that lorcaserin (Belviq®), an FDA-approved serotonin 2 C receptor agonist, may be a promising medication for the treatment of stimulant addiction. However, few studies have investigated its effects on self-administration of drugs of abuse from other pharmacological classes, including opioids. Here, adult male rhesus macaques (N = 3) responded under a fixed ratio 30 schedule of food (1-g banana-flavored pellets) and IV heroin delivery. Following stable self-administration of a range of heroin doses (0.32-32 μg/kg/inj, IV), the effects of acute pretreatment with lorc
