SIGNIFICANCE: Inappropriate ophthalmic self-medication continues to plague Sub-Saharan Africa because of lack of public health education and inaccessibility to eye care services. PURPOSE: To study a new surgical option of primary placement of a hydroxyapatite-coated sleeve into the Bioceramic implant during enucleation or evisceration.
DESIGN: Retrospective, observational case series.
METHODS: A standard enucleation or evisceration was performed, followed by the preplacement of a hydroxyapatite-coated sleeve into the Bioceramic implant. Care must be taken to ensure the sleeve has been positioned centrally when the implant is put inside the orbital socket. Complications such as sleeve exposure, Bioceramic implant exposure, and infection were closely observed.

PURPOSE: To assess the problems associated with the Bioceramic (Aluminum oxide, Al(2)O(3)) orbital implant.
METHODS: A consecutive case series of 107 patients receiving a Bioceramic orbital implant by two surgeons over a 3-year period were reviewed. BACKGROUND: Dermis fat grafts are used in orbital reconstruction in a variety of procedures. However, there have been few controlled studies testing their effectiveness. This is a prospective study on 40 patients.
METHODS: Primary and secondary orbital dermis fat grafts were evaluated with regard to the long-term cosmetic results of two thicknesses, 10 and 20 mm, of fat pad, keeping all other parameters as constant as possible. METHODS: An 81-year-old woman developed asymptomatic focal elevation of the iris, and ultrasound biomicroscopy showed a fluid-filled mass that was interpreted as an iris pigment epithelial cyst. PURPOSE: To histopathologically evaluate the effect of cryopreserved human amniotic membrane (AM) transplant on preventing the development of postoperative adhesions after extraocular muscle surgery.
METHODS: Ten albino rabbits were used. The superior rectus muscles were bilaterally resected. In right eyes, the muscle was wrapped with cryopreserved human AM (group AM). In left eyes, the muscle was not wrapped with AM and served as a control group (group C).
