Establishment and evaluation of a compound fear behavior model of Tourette's syndrome in rats.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common childhood disorder characterized by unwanted movements or vocal sounds called tics. It is often accompanied by other psychobehavioral disorders, including fearful behavior. The establishment and evaluation of rat models of TS and comorbid fear can provide an experimental basis for the treatment of TS and its comorbid fear disorder. METHODS: Sixteen rats were randomly divided into a model group (n=8) and control group (n=8). In the model group, rats were injected intraperitoneally with iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) for 1 week to establish the TS mod…

Fear conditioning in women with anorexia nervosa and healthy controls: A preliminary study.

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by anxiety-driven behaviors, such as food avoidance and distressing persistent thoughts about weight gain and body image. The present study used a classical fear conditioning procedure to test the processes of fear acquisition and generalization, extinction, and renewal in patients with anorexia nervosa and healthy controls. An app-based fear conditioning procedure was administered remotely to 64 patients and 60 healthy controls, over two sessions. A human female scream served as the unconditioned stimulus (US) and two neutral shapes were used as either the pa…

Rapid identification and clinical indices of fear-avoidance in youth with chronic pain.

Pain-related fear and avoidance are increasingly demonstrated to play an important role in adult and childhood chronic pain. The Fear of Pain Questionnaire for Children (FOPQC) is a 24-item measure of pain-related fear-avoidance in youth that has demonstrated good indices of reliability and validity, treatment responsiveness, and associations with brain circuitry alterations. This study describes the development and psychometric examination of the FOPQC-SF, a short form of the original measure. We selected 10 items for the short form that best represented the content and 2-factor (fear and avo…

Fear of death unaffected by intensity or type of afterlife belief in a Jewish population.

We investigate the relationship between religious afterlife belief and fear of death in a Jewish population. Functionalist theories of religion often assert that afterlife belief serves as a buffer for death anxiety. Accordingly, those who attest to stronger, more orthodox, beliefs in an afterlife ought to indicate lower rates of death anxiety than those who do not have strongly held afterlife beliefs. From a wide-ranging survey of attitudes and experiences with death, we show that specific beliefs, intensity of belief, and orthodoxy of held beliefs play no significant role in the self-reporte…

Scared of compassion: Fear of compassion in anxiety, mood, and non-clinical groups.

OBJECTIVES: Fear of receiving compassion from others, expressing compassion to others, and being compassionate towards oneself have been identified as potentially important factors in the persistence of depression, stress disorders, and eating disorders. There is good reason to expect that these fears may play a role in anxiety and related difficulties, but there is little available information on the extent to which they are present and associated with symptom severity. METHODS: This study compared the severity of the three fears of compassion (receiving, expressing to others, and showing to…

A Ghost Left Behind After Transvenous Lead Extraction: A Finding to be Feared.

BACKGROUND Following transvenous lead extraction (TLE) for infective endocarditis, a fibrinous remnant, or "ghost", that previously encapsulated the lead may remain. The main aim of this case report was to highlight the importance of identification of ghosts, their negative implications, and the importance of close monitoring. CASE REPORT A 72-year-old male with a history of heart failure with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy and remote cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D) placement as well as atrioventricular node ablation for atrial fibrillation presented following a mechanical

Characterizing the Impact of Fear of Falling on Activity and Falls in Older Adults with Glaucoma.

OBJECTIVE: Fear of falling (FoF) may alter mobility in older adults, especially among those with visual impairment. Using a longitudinal prospective cohort of older glaucoma patients, we investigated whether and how FoF is associated with future falls and physical activity. DESIGN: Prospective observational cohort study. SETTING: Hospital-based single-center recruitment. PARTICIPANTS: Individuals with glaucoma or suspected glaucoma. MEASUREMENTS: FoF was measured annually over a 3-year period using the University of Illinois at Chicago FoF Questionnaire, with lower Rasch-analyzed FoF score…

Neuromagnetic Amygdala Response to Pain-Related Fear as a Brain Signature of Fibromyalgia.

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain condition characterized by impaired emotional regulation. This study explored the brain response to pain-related fear as a potential brain signature of FM. METHODS: We used a conditioned fear task and magnetoencephalography to record pain-related fear responses in patients with FM. Two blocks of 30 fear responses were collected to compute the response strength in the first block and the strength difference between the first and second blocks (fear habituation). These measurements were investigated for their clinical relevance and compared with…

Short report: coaching as an intervention to treat mild form of fear of flying.

Fear of flying can lead to restrictions in private but also in professional life. Different treatment approaches are available to handle fear of flying. Of these, coaching could be one possible treatment method. However, evidence is rare and the aim of this study was to evaluate descriptive effect of wingwave® coaching on a mild form of fear of flying. Coaching was delivered twice before the first flight and once after the first flight. The interventions were conducted between December 2016 and May 2017. Four people with fear of flying participated in the study. As measurement tools, satisfact…

Who's afraid of Ebola? Epidemic fires and locative fears in the Information Age.

Epidemics have traditionally been viewed as the widespread occurrence of infectious disease within a community, or a sudden increase above what is typical. But modern epidemics are both more and less than the diffusion of viral entities. We argue that epidemics are 'fire objects', using a term coined by Law and Singleton: They generate locative fears through encounters that focus attention on entities that are unknown or imprecisely known, transforming spaces and humans into indeterminate dangers, alternating appearance and absence. The Ebola epidemic of 2014 had more complex impacts than the …

Neural responses to social evaluation: The role of fear of positive and negative evaluation.

One of the core features of social anxiety disorder (SAD) is the persistent fear of being evaluated. Fear of evaluation includes fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and fear of positive evaluation (FPE). Few studies have examined the relationship between self-reported FNE and FPE and neural responses to simulated negative and positive social evaluation. In the current study, 56 participants, 35 with SAD and 21 healthy controls, completed questionnaires to assess dimensions of social anxiety including FNE and FPE, as well as symptoms of anxiety and depression. Participants also completed a social…

Not a one-way road-Severity, progression and prevention of firework fears in dogs.

Noise fears represent a highly prevalent welfare problem in dogs. An online survey was performed to explore severity and progression of firework fears in dogs, and relationships with demographics, health, behaviour problems and owners' training efforts to prevent or alleviate firework fears. Fifty-two percent of dogs in the sample (N = 1225) were at least partially affected by firework fears, and the majority developed a fear of fireworks in the first year of life, with a decreasing frequency of new occurrences up until seven years, and only few newly affected dogs beyond this age. While almos…

The association between serotonin transporter availability and the neural correlates of fear bradycardia.

Susceptibility to stress-related psychopathology is associated with reduced expression of the serotonin transporter (5-HTT), particularly in combination with stress exposure. Aberrant physiological and neuronal responses to threat may underlie this increased vulnerability. Here, implementing a cross-species approach, we investigated the association between 5-HTT expression and the neural correlates of fear bradycardia, a defensive response linked to vigilance and action preparation. We tested this during threat anticipation induced by a well-established fear conditioning paradigm applied in bo…

Fearing Failure: Grandiose Narcissism, Vulnerable Narcissism, and Emotional Reactivity in Children.

The distinction between grandiose and vulnerable narcissism is new to the child literature, but initial findings suggest that it may have important implications for understanding adjustment. This study examined how expressions of narcissism in children influence their reactions to a mild egothreats experience. Children (N = 124; aged 8-12 years) completed self-ratings before and after doing a brief but challenging task. Negative emotions, self-conscious emotions, and performance estimates were measured. Regression analyses showed that, even after controlling the effects of self-esteem and temp

Introduction to the Special Issue on Cognitive and Behavioral Flexibility in Fear and Anxiety Disorders.

Converging lines of research highlight the significance of cognitive and behavioral flexibility in the etiology, maintenance, and treatment of fear and anxiety disorders. We have developed a Special Issue to highlight recent empirical investigations, contemporary theory, and novel directions for future study. It is hoped that this special issue will (a) underscore the centrality of cognitive and behavioral flexibility to fear- and anxiety-related psychopathology, (b) call attention to cognitive science approaches investigating related neuropsychological correlates, and (c) highlight novel expe…

A longitudinal study of changes and associations in dental fear in parent/adolescent dyads.

BACKGROUND: Dental fear seems to fluctuate, but concordance of changes in dental fears between parent/adolescent dyads has not been reported. AIM: To study longitudinally the associations between adolescent and parental dental fears and their changes. DESIGN: Adolescents and parents reported their dental fear independently of each other when adolescents were between 11-12 and 15-16-year-olds. Eight hundred and seventeen eligible parent/adolescent dyads were included in the analyses. Dental fear was measured with a single question using five response alternatives. Associations between adolesc…

[Caesarean section at full dilatation: What are the risks to fear for the mother and child?].

OBJECTIVES: Caesarean section is associated with increased maternal morbidity compared to a vaginal delivery, especially if it occurs during labour. Little data on caesarean section performed at full dilatation is available. METHODS: This was a retrospective study done in University Hospital of type 3 over a period of ten years, including future primiparous patients who had a caesarean section performed at full dilatation, compared to a control group of patients whose caesarean section was conducted in first part of the labour. We collected different maternal data per- and postoperative and n

Usefulness of the Mobile Virtual Reality Self-Training for Overcoming a Fear of Heights.

A mobile virtual reality system, equipped with built-in variables such as heart rate (HR), gaze-down data, and subjective fear rating, can allow individuals with a fear of heights to overcome it by self-training. This study aimed to verify the efficacy and safety of the training program. Forty-eight volunteers completed the four-session self-training program over 2 weeks. They were allocated into either low- or high-fear group by the Acrophobia Questionnaire (AQ)-anxiety scores, and then the changes of the built-in variables and AQ-anxiety scores were analyzed between the groups. The safety wa…
