Impulsivity and compulsivity in binge eating disorder: A systematic review of behavioral studies.

BACKGROUND: Binge eating disorder (BED) often includes impulsive and compulsive behaviors related to eating behavior and food. Impulsivity and compulsivity generally may contribute to the etiology and maintenance of multiple psychiatric disorders including BED. This review aimed to identify and synthesize available behavioral studies of impulsivity and compulsivity among individuals with BED. METHOD: A systematic search was performed focusing on BED and specific facets of impulsivity (rapid response and choice) and compulsivity (set-shifting, cognitive flexibility, and/or habit learning). All

Wood mouse feeding effort and decision-making when encountering a restricted unknown food source.

Animals making foraging decisions must balance the energy gained, the time invested, and the influence of key environmental factors. In our work, we examined the effect of predation risk cues and experience on feeding efforts when a novel food resource was made available. To achieve this, we live-trapped wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus in Monte de Valdelatas (Madrid), where 80 Sherman traps were set in four plots. Traps were subjected to two food-access difficulties in treatments consisting of three consecutive nights: open plastic bottles (easy) and closed bottles (difficult), both using corn

Behavioural Repertoires and Time Budgets of Semi-Free-Ranging and Captive Groups of Wedge-Capped Capuchin Monkeys, Cebus olivaceus, in Zoo Exhibits in Venezuela.

The behavioural repertoires and time budgets of 2 captive groups and 1 semi-free-ranging group of Cebus olivaceus were determined with the aim to assess the impact of the zoo environment on behaviour. The repertoires were qualitatively similar between groups and to those reported for wild troops, but the captive groups showed self-directed and stereotyped behaviours not reported in the wild. The differences in repertoires between groups were easily associated with the opportunity to interact directly with the visitors, with particularities of the enclosure and with the severity of confinement.

Stereotyping starlings are more 'pessimistic'.

Negative affect in humans and animals is known to cause individuals to interpret ambiguous stimuli pessimistically, a phenomenon termed 'cognitive bias'. Here, we used captive European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) to test the hypothesis that a reduction in environmental conditions, from enriched to non-enriched cages, would engender negative affect, and hence 'pessimistic' biases. We also explored whether individual differences in stereotypic behaviour (repetitive somersaulting) predicted 'pessimism'. Eight birds were trained on a novel conditional discrimination task with differential rewards

[The individual characteristics of dogs with a free choice of the probability and value of food reinforcement].

The tactics of choice between two feeders after changing the probability and quality of food reinforcement in one of them was studied in 4 freely behaving dogs. The conditioned stimulus was not changed. It was shown that choice tactics differed between the dogs even under conditions of equal 100% probability of food reinforcement in both the feeders. Decrease in probability of presentation of higher-quality food in one of the feeders increased the incidence of choice of this feeder only in one dog. This dog was characterized by a higher rate of the dynamic stereotype conditioning in response t

Early oxytocin treatment in infants with Prader-Willi syndrome is safe and is associated with better endocrine, metabolic and behavioral outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin (OT) plays an important role in modulating behavior, social interactions and feeding. Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder, is a model of hypothalamic disorder including OT dysfunction. We previously showed that infants with PWS who had received an early short course (7 days) of intranasal OT treatment improved their oral and social skills. We aim to document the long-term tolerance and effects of early intranasal OT treatment on the disease trajectory. METHODS: We performed a comparative clinical trial including the 17 children who had

Inhibition of Phosphodiesterase 2 Ameliorates Post-Traumatic Stress-Induced Alcohol Intake Disorder by Regulating cAMP/cGMP Signaling.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the prevalent psychiatric disorder that induces alcohol use disorders (AUD) such as abnormal alcohol intake and anxiety. However, little is known about whether phosphodiesterase 2 (PDE2)-cAMP/cGMP signaling is involved in PTSD-induced AUD. METHODS: The present study used single-prolonged stress (SPS) to mimic PTSD that induced increases in ethanol intake and preference (2-bottle choice test) and anxiety-like behavior (elevated-plus maze test and novelty suppressed feeding test). PDE2 inhibitor Bay 60-7550 (Bay) was administered to the mice

Gastric Bypass Surgery Recruits a Gut PPAR-α-Striatal D1R Pathway to Reduce Fat Appetite in Obese Rats.

Bariatric surgery remains the single most effective long-term treatment modality for morbid obesity, achieved mainly by lowering caloric int … nces. These findings delineate a molecular/systems pathway through which bariatric surgery improves feeding behavior and may aid in the development of novel weight loss strategies that similarly modify brain reward circuits compromised in obesity.

The appetite suppressant, d-fenfluramine, decreases self-stimulation at a feeding site in the lateral hypothalamus.

In prior studies rats showed a relative shift from self-stimulation to escape (i.e., from reward to aversion) following a large meal, obesity or anorectic doses of insulin. Racemic fenfluramine, on the other hand, decreased both self-stimulation and escape suggesting it had a general behavior suppressant property. To avoid the depressive, antidopaminergic effects of the l-isomer, this study tested the d-isomer which is primarily serotonergic. Rats were screened for stimulation-induced feeding and then trained to self-stimulate with one lever in 5-min periods that alternated with 5-min periods

Chronic exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics induces gut damage and an altered feeding strategy, leading to insemination failure in male guppies.

Reproductive toxicity of nanoplastics is frequently attributed to endocrine disruption; however, whether gut injury and digestive dysfunction can cascade into terminal reproductive failure remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of chronic exposure to 70-nm polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs; 0, 20, 200, and 2000 μg/L) on adult male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) over 90 days (approximately three reproductive cycles). Chronic PS-NP exposure induced significant intestinal histopathological damage (including villus shortening and epithelial vacuolization), reduced digestive enzyme acti

Myelin Transcription Factor 1 (MyT1) overexpression mitigates social isolation-induced behavioral deficits: Insights into cortical synaptotagmin 1 regulation and antidepressant-like effects.

Social isolation (SI) stress is increasingly recognized as a concern, associated with detrimental effects on mood and emotional well-being. Myelin Transcription Factor 1 (MyT1) is known for its pivotal role in nervous system development and mood regulation. This study delves into the potential of MyT1 to mitigate SI-induced behavioral abnormalities in mice. Utilizing a chronic SI model involving neonatal and post-weaning SI, male and female mice were subjected to lentiviral overexpression of MyT1 specifically in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). A battery of behavioral assessments, includin

Structural Differences in the Digestive Tract Between Females and Males Could Modulate Regurgitation Behavior in Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae).

With the aim of understanding the mechanisms involved in the regurgitation behavior of tephritid flies, we performed a structural study of the digestive system of the economically important fruit-fly pest, Anastrepha ludens (Loew) using optical, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), plus a feeding assay. Most structures studied are similar to those previously reported in other adult dipterans, but, importantly, we found sexual differences in some structures that apparently affect regurgitation. We report for the first time sexual differences in the cr

Deep Phenotyping in ReNU Syndrome Identifies a Recognizable Age-Dependent Clinical Trajectory.

Pathogenic variants in the noncoding gene RNU4-2 cause ReNU syndrome, a common neurodevelopmental disorder. Although the core phenotype is well described, longitudinal symptom progression and family perspectives remain insufficiently characterized. We identified 11 individuals with RNU4-2 pathogenic variants through reanalysis of clinical whole genome sequencing (WGS) data from a previously undiagnosed cohort. Using deep phenotyping, including retrospective medical record review and parental insights, we delineated a recognizable age-dependent clinical trajectory. Infancy was characterized by

Gustatory function of Aedes aegypti opsins and TRPA1 in avoiding a natural insect repellent.

The mosquito, Aedes aegypti, spreads viruses that cause dengue, yellow fever, and other devastating diseases. To identify candidate repellents that suppress blood feeding by Aedes aegypti, we conducted an in vitro screen of natural chemicals for activators of two visual opsins, Op1 and Op2, which we found are expressed at very high levels in gustatory organs. We found that Op1 and Op2 are chemical sensors since they are activated by flavonoids, including catechin. We devised an artificial membrane that mimics multiple properties of skin (VectaDerm), which we used on blood feeders, leading to t
