Osteoporosis pathology in people with severe motor and intellectual disability.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the severity and pathology of osteoporosis in children and adults with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) by evaluating bone enzymes, by which we aimed to determine adequate treatment approaches for preventing fractures. METHODS: Ninety patients (44 men, 46 women; mean age, 34.5 years) underwent bone quality assessment. Quantitative ultrasonography (QUS) was used to measure the T-score and Z-score of the calcaneus, and blood tests were used to measure bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b levels as bone formation a

Host-feeding preference of Phlebotomus orientalis (Diptera: Psychodidae) in an endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis in northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Blood-feeding behavior studies are important for estimating the efficiency of pathogen transmission and assessing the relative human disease risk. However, in Ethiopia and other parts of East Africa there are large remaining gaps in identifying the feeding habits of Phlebotomus orientalis, the vector of Leishmania donovani. The aim of the study was to determine the blood feeding patterns of P. orientalis in Tahtay Adiyabo district, northern Ethiopia. METHODS: For bloodmeal analysis, sandflies were collected from three different villages of Tahtay Adiyabo district using CDC light t

Study of Asymptomatic Hypoglycemia in Full Term Exclusively Breastfed Neonates in First 48 Hours of Life.

INTRODUCTION: Hypoglycemia is a common metabolic problem in the neonatal period especially in the presence of settings like prematurity, small for gestational age babies and sepsis. Episodes of asymptomatic hypoglycemia may occur in term neonates without apparent risk factors. AIM: This study was conducted to estimate the incidence of hypoglycemia in healthy, intramural, singleton full term neonates and to correlate the above incidence with maternal factors like parity, mode of delivery and time of initiation of breast feeding after birth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hospital based, prospective

Prebiotics for the management of hyperbilirubinemia in preterm neonates.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated if prebiotics have benefits for the management of hyperbilirubinemia in preterm neonates. METHODS: Preterm neonates were entered into the study when enteral feeding volume met 30 mL/kg/day. They randomly received a mixture of short-chain galacto-oligosacarids/long-chain fructo-oligosacarids or distilled water (placebo) for 1 week. Total serum bilirubin level was measured by transcutaneous bilirubinometry. Stool frequency and meeting full enteral feeding during the study period were considered as secondary outcomes. RESULTS: Twenty-five neonates in each group completed

Transition from tube feeding to oral feeding: experience in a tertiary care paediatric cardiology unit.

BACKGROUND: Home enteral tube feeding (HETF) is imperative for many infants and children with congenital heart disease (CHD). Tube weaning (TW) facilitates the progression from tube feeding to oral diet. There is limited literature on TW practices, protocols and success for children with CHD that have been tube fed. AIMS: The objective of this study is to assess the process of weaning HETF in a tertiary referral centre for paediatric CHD. Specifically, we aimed to assess the duration of HETF, duration of TW and the interventions involved. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical and

Timing of enteral feeding in cerebral malaria in resource-poor settings: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Early start of enteral feeding is an established treatment strategy in intubated patients in intensive care since it reduces invasive bacterial infections and length of hospital stay. There is equipoise whether early enteral feeding is also beneficial in non-intubated patients with cerebral malaria in resource poor settings. We hypothesized that the risk of aspiration pneumonia might outweigh the potential benefits of earlier recovery and prevention of hypoglycaemia. METHOD AND FINDINGS: A randomized trial of early (day of admission) versus late (after 60 hours in adults or 36 hou

The reasons for early weaning among mothers in Teheran.

In order to identify the reasons for early weaning in Teheran, we interviewed 900 mothers using a systematic randomized sampling method. A total of 15% of the mothers were illiterate, 93% were housewives, and 97% had given birth in hospitals. Only 3% of the newborns benefited from rooming-in facilities in hospital, and 68% were bottle-fed while still in hospital. In 3.1% of cases the mother had not breast-fed her newborn at all. Of those who had breast-fed their infant, 38% used only their own milk, whereas 62% used a combination of breast milk and infant formula. The median duration of breast

Changes in plasma catecholamine, free fatty acid, and glucose concentrations, and plasma monoamine oxidase activity before and after feeding in laying hens.

In order to better understand the relationship of free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations to feed intake in laying hens, plasma levels of catecholamine, glucose, and FFA and plasma monoamine oxidase activity were measured. Blood samples were taken in the morning before and after the start of feeding via chronic brachial vein catheters. Plasma concentrations of epinephrine and norepinephrine were analyzed by modified HPLC with an electrochemical detection method. Plasma concentrations of FFA and glucose were not significantly different before and after the start of feeding, however a negative corr
