BACKGROUND: The calcar femorale was identified long ago. However, our current understanding of the calcar is insufficient, and its related concepts are sometimes confused. The calcar femoral is an important anatomical structure of the proximal femur, and its function can be overlooked. In trauma, tumors, or other diseases, the calcar femorale can be destroyed or changed pathologically. As a result, the mechanical structure of the proximal femur becomes destroyed, causing pathological fractures. How to address the destruction of the calcar femorale or the damage to the calcar femorale is discus

OBJECTIVES: This biomechanical study was conducted to compare fixation stability of the proximal fragments and their mechanical characteristics in proximal femur models of unstable basicervical IT fractures fixed by cephalomedullary nailing using 3 different types of the femoral head fixation.
METHODS: A total of 36 composite femurs corresponding to osteoporotic human bone were used. These specimens were fixed with Gamma 3 (hip screw type; group 1) in 12, Gamma 3 U-blade (screw-blade hybrid type; group 2) in 12, and proximal femoral nail antirotation-II (helical blade type; group 3) in 12, re

Previous studies have shown that fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is associated with low level of physical activity and exercise, which may lead to an increased risk of osteoporosis. However, studies of bone mineral density (BMD) in fibromyalgia have shown conflicting results. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to better characterize the association between FMS and BMD. A comprehensive search of the databases MEDLINE and EMBASE was performed from inception through May 2016. The inclusion criterion was the observational studies' assessment of the association between fibromyalgi

Osteochondromas, or exostoses, are overwhelmingly found as isolated lesions although they can be present within the context of multiple hereditary exostosis. Increased exostotic load associated with multiple hereditary exostosis can lead to limb-length discrepancy, increased femoral anteversion, valgus angulation, and acetabular dysplasia. Solitary osteochondromas have been linked with bursal inflammation and pain, compression on neurovascular structures, and malignant degeneration, groin and lower extremity pain. Isolated exostosis involving the femoral neck is a rare entity which is often di

UNLABELLED: Loading modality is a strong external determinant of structure and concomitant strength of the femoral neck. Particularly effective seem to be loadings, which arise from high impacts or impacts from atypical loading directions.
INTRODUCTION: Physical loading plays an important role, not only in the process of bone modeling and remodeling, but also in shaping a mechanically appropriate bone structure. This study aimed at testing the hypothesis that the type of loading partly determines the femoral neck structure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 255 premenopausal female athletes

Twenty-three patients with chronic or acute to chronic slip of the capital femoral epiphysis were treated using a modified trapezoid osteotomy of the femoral neck. All slips were greater than 60 degrees. After a follow-up period of 70 (54-93) months, the results were excellent or good in 18 hips, fair in 1, and poor in 4 hips. Avascular necrosis developed in 3 hips, and chondrolysis in 2.

Twenty-one children and 26 hips with recent slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) underwent serial sonographic examination after operative fixation. The initial sonographic step at the anterior outline of physis decreased as a result of metaphyseal resorption. The first signs of resorption were evident 3 weeks after onset of symptoms; thereafter, the rate of resorption was 2 mm for each 3 weeks of follow-up. Finally, the physeal step was smooth and the anterior aspect of the femoral neck was straight. Sonography is accurate and free of projectional errors in assessment and classification of

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is one of the major tools for assessing the whole body and regional body composition and body adiposity. Various body composition parameters including android fat mass (AFM), gynoid fat mass (GFM), and android-to-gynoid fat ratio (AG fat ratio) obtained from whole body DXA can be used as a reliable surrogate marker for regional body composition analysis. This study aimed to explore the contribution of android and gynoid adiposity to bone mineral density (BMD) in healthy postmenopausal Thai women. This cross-sectional study enrolled 1448 healthy Thai women

PURPOSE: Accumulating evidence has shown a close connection between hematopoiesis and bone formation. Our aim was to evaluate the association between peripheral blood cell counts and bone mineral density (BMD) in a sample of postmenopausal women.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundreds thirty eight healthy postmenopausal women who underwent BMD measurement during their health check-up were investigated. BMD was measured by dual energy X-ray asorptiometry at L1-L4 spine, femoral neck and total proximal femur. BMD was expressed as a T-score: among T-scores obtained from three different sites (L1-

This article presents an expert consensus on vascular assessment and management strategies for adult femoral neck fractures, based on a narrative review of current evidence and the collective clinical experience of a multidisciplinary panel of orthopaedic and reconstructive surgeons. To assist clinicians in accurately evaluating the vascular status of the femoral head and formulating individualized treatment plans, based on anatomic understanding of its blood supply, current vascular assessment techniques, and the establishment of a novel classification system. The ultimate goal is to reduce p

Pelvic fragility fractures result in significant morbidity and their incidence has increased over the past 30 years. One of the main risk factors in skeletal fragility is bone mineral density (BMD). Most of the current literature has focused on understanding spine and hip BMD. We aimed to measure the BMD of pelvis in a cohort of post-menopausal women and compare it to BMD at other skeletal sites. A questionnaire regarding risk factors for osteoporosis was completed by each participant. DXA scan of the pelvis was performed using research software. Three areas of the pelvis corresponding to comm

Local treatment of bone loss with an injection of a resorbable, calcium-based implant material to replace bone has a long history of clinical use. The in vivo discrimination of changes in bone versus implant is challenging with standard computed tomography (CT). However, spectral-CT techniques enable the separation between tissues of similar densities but different chemical compositions. Dual-layer spectral-CT imaging and postprocessing analysis methods were applied to investigate the separability of AGN1 (a triphasic calcium-based implant) and bone after AGN1 injection in n = 10 male cadaveri

PURPOSE: To determine if boney morphology influences the anatomic location of hip fractures in elderly patients.
METHODS: All patients with hip fractures between 2008 and 2012 who had hip radiographs taken prior to the fracture were reviewed. Fractures were classified as intracapsular or extracapsular and hip morphology was measured on the pre-fracture x-rays. Hip morphology was determined by alpha angle, lateral central edge angle, acetabular index, neck-shaft angle, hip axis length, femoral neck diameter, Tönnis classification for hip osteoarthritis (OA) and the presence of a crossover sign

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head(ONFH), a refractory disease characterized by death of the osteocytes and the bone marrow due to inadequate blood supply caused by various mechanisms, usually leads to the collapse of the femoral head and malfunction of the hip joint. The crux is to diagnose ONFH early in the precollapse stage and prevent subsequent progression of collapsing through early interventions, thus delaying or avoiding the replacement of the hip joint. A number of joint salvaging operation treatments for early stage ONFH are available. However, there has been no consensus with regard

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) represents a constellation of anatomical and clinical features, but definitive diagnosis is often difficult. The high prevalence of cam deformity of the femoral head in the asymptomatic population as well as clinical factors leading to the onset of symptoms raises questions as to what other factors increase the risk of cartilage damage and hip pain.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose was to identify any differences in anatomical parameters and squat kinematics among symptomatic, asymptomatic, and control individuals and if these parameters can deter
