Eighty-five pregnant problem drinkers were given intensive counselling throughout gestation to persuade them to reduce or stop their alcohol intake. Nevertheless, 7% of their blood specimens collected at follow-up visits contained ethanol. Fifty-five women (65%) were able to reduce their alcohol consumption by at least 50%. Alcohol abuse was associated in a dose-dependent manner with fetal growth retardation detectable by ultrasonography from 27 weeks gestation. Twenty infants (24%) had a complete fetal alcohol syndrome and 22 (26%) had some features of 'fetal alcohol effects' (FAE). In additi

To study the severity and degree of in utero alcohol effects in relation to the rate of maternal alcohol damage, multiparous 1-year alcohol-fed rats were used, with an appropriate pair-fed control group. During pregnancy, alcoholic dams showed relatively high acetaldehyde levels (41 +/- 19 mumol/l) and blood alcohol levels of 22.8 +/- 14 mmol/l. They also showed marked histological alterations in liver as well as high serum aspartate-aminotransferase, alanine-aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and gamma-glutamyltransferase activities. The increase in serum enzyme

Fetal alcohol effects in 359 infants born to disadvantaged women identified as having a history of alcohol abuse or as controls and who provided reports of alcohol use in pregnancy are being studied in a prospective design. Alcohol abuse was assessed with the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST). Alcohol use (AA/day) was based on short-term recall covering 2-week periods prior to each antenatal visit. A tally of anomalies associated with fetal alcohol syndrome was obtained in a blinded examination of each infant. This tally was significantly related to the MAST classification and, for the

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is noted for poor growth, developmental delays, and mental retardation. In animals, prenatal alcohol exposure alters anatomical, physiological, and neurochemical maturation and produces behavioral changes similar to those in children. Since thyroid hormones are critical trophic factors for normal somatic and neural maturation, and since fetal thyroid hormones are profoundly affected by acute maternal ethanol administration, we hypothesized that postnatal effects of prenatal alcohol exposure may be related to abnormal thyroid hormone development. We report here that

The effects of prenatal ethanol (ETOH) exposure (2.8-3.5 g/kg per day) on subsequent adult ETOH preference and on ETOH consumption after treatment with zimelidine, a serotonin uptake inhibitor, were investigated. Pregnant rats were exposed to an ETOH/saccharin solution in the first, second, third, all three, or none, of the trimesters of the gestation period. As adults, the offspring were subjected to a 40-day screening procedure to determine ETOH preference (greater than 50% of total daily fluid consumption) over water (experiment 1). Only animals which preferred ETOH were included in experim

Quantitative computer-assisted image processing techniques were used to measure changes in the Timm sulfide silver histochemical staining in the dentate gyrus of rats exposed to ethanol during gestation and following unilateral entorhinal lesions as adults. Prenatal exposure to a liquid diet containing 35% ethanol derived calories (12.6 +/- 0.9 g/kg/day) had no effect on the size of either the inner or total molecular layers. However, prenatal ethanol exposure did affect afferent reorganization when animals were lesioned as adults. There was a significant increase in the width and area of the

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a set of conditions resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). FASD is estimated to affect between 2% and 5% of people in the United States and Western Europe. The exact teratogenic mechanism of alcohol on fetal development is still unclear. Ethanol (EtOH) contributes to the malfunctioning of the neurological system in children exposed in utero by decreasing glutathione peroxidase action, with an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which causes oxidative stress. We report a case of a mother with declared alcohol abuse and

To determine whether acute alcohol ingestion during pregnancy could affect fetal myocardial function, studies were carried in six chronically catheterized fetal sheep during maternal alcohol infusion. Absolute ethyl alcohol (0.8 ml/kg) was administered to the mother over 10 minutes via the jugular vein. These infusions were repeated every 30 minutes during 3 hours, and peak maternal and fetal blood concentrations close to 200 mg/dl alcohol were reached. Fetal PCO2 decreased from a baseline of 43.15 +/- 3.75 to 36.13 +/- 2.6 torr 1 hour after the start of alcohol infusion (P less than 0.05). Si

In this paper Naive Bayesian classifiers were applied for the purpose of differentiation between the EEG signals recorded from children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders (FASD) and healthy ones. This work also provides a brief introduction to the FASD itself, explaining the social, economic and genetic reasons for the FASD occurrence. The obtained results were good and promising and indicate that EEG recordings can be a helpful tool for potential diagnostics of FASDs children affected with it, in particular those with invisible physical signs of these spectrum disorders.

In this review, the benefits of physical exercise on structural and functional plasticity in the hippocampus are discussed. The evidence is clear that voluntary exercise in rats and mice can lead to increases in hippocampal neurogenesis and enhanced synaptic plasticity which ultimately result in improved performance in hippocampal-dependent tasks. Furthermore, in models of neurological disorders, including fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's disease exercise can also elicit benefic…

Alcohol and acetaldehyde blood levels were measured in chronic alcoholic pregnant rats and their fetuses at 15, 19 and 21 days of gestation. Similar ethanol concentrations were found in fetal and maternal blood in all gestation periods studied, however levels in amniotic fluid were higher than in mother's blood, especially in the early stages of gestation. Acetaldehyde concentrations were always lower in fetal than in maternal blood although increasing throughout gestation. The levels in fetal blood and amniotic fluid compared to maternal blood, were ca. 40, 50 and 70% at 15, 19 and 21 days of

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is an insidious yet preventable cause of developmental disability. The prenatal stage is a critical period for brain development with the concurrence of high vulnerability to the acute and prolonged effects of PAE. There is substantial evidence from both human observations and laboratory experiments that PAE is a common risk factor that predisposes to an array of postnatal mental disorders, including emotional, cognitive, and motor deficits. Although it is well accepted that PAE causes substantial morbidity, available treatments are limited. One reason is the la

The alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) isoenzymes (alcohol:NAD oxidoreductase, EC 1.1.1.1) of classes I, III and IV were investigated by activity and starch gel electrophoresis analyses during rat ontogeny. Class I was studied in the liver, class III in the brain and class IV in the stomach and eyes. Classes I and IV exhibited very low activity during the fetal period, reaching 12% and 3%, respectively, of the adult value at birth. Class III was relatively more active in the fetus, with 38% of the adult activity at birth. In the three cases, activity increased after birth and adult values were found
