Comparison of the Effectiveness of Fluoride Varnish and Fluoride-Releasing Adhesives in Preventing and Managing White Spot Lesions During Fixed Orthodontic Treatment, and Evaluation of Patient-Reported Outcomes: A Randomised Controlled Trial 1 Year After Debonding.

BACKGROUND: White spot lesions (WSL) may appear on teeth during fixed orthodontic treatment. Professionally administered topical fluorides play a key role in preventing such lesions. However, the evidence for their long-term efficacy and patient-reported outcomes is limited. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of topical fluorides (varnish vs. adhesive) in reducing the incidence of white spot lesions (WSLs) during and after 1 year of fixed orthodontic treatment. The secondary objectives were patient-related outcomes, including perception of WSLs and adverse effects o

A Cluster-Randomized Clinical Trial of Silver Diamine Fluoride vs Atraumatic Restoration in Older Adults.

Untreated dental caries, a chronic disease linked to systemic health, is common among older adults due to a lack of dental insurance and affordable dental care. Minimally invasive interventions such as silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and atraumatic restorative treatments (ARTs) have been recommended by the World Health Organization to control caries where evidence is lacking in older adults. This cluster-randomized clinical trial tested the noninferiority of SDF vs ART in caries arrest (primary) and prevention (secondary) at 52 wk. Older adults ≥62 y living in 33 subsidized housing facilities we

Solid-to-Solid Zn Anode and Interhalogen Iodine Cathodes for High-Voltage Fluoride-Ion Batteries.

Fluoride ion batteries (FIBs) operated at room temperature typically suffer from low output voltages (< 0.5 V) due to the lack of reversible, suitable electrode chemistries in liquid electrolytes. Here, we report a high-voltage aqueous FIB system delivering an output voltage of ∼1.3 V by coupling a zinc/zinc hydroxyfluoride (Zn↔ZnOHF) anode with an iodine cathode undergoing reversible I-↔I2F- interhalogen conversion in an NH4F-based methanol/water hybrid electrolyte. At the anode, strong complexation between NH4 + and Zn2+ activates a reversible solid-to-solid Zn↔ZnOHF conversion. Meanwhile, m

Alkali-Metal Tuning of Chain Topology and Magnetic Order in V3+-Based Lead Vanadium Fluorides.

Two new V3+-based alkali metal lead fluorides, Na3.6Pb6.4V4F28 and K3.8Pb2.2V4F20, were synthesized via hydrothermal methods derived from the parent compound Pb7V4F26. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Na3.6Pb6.4V4F28 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1̅, featuring linear V-F-V chains within its structure, whereas K3.8Pb2.2V4F20 adopts the tetragonal space group P42/nmc and features a wavy zigzag chain structure. Magnetic and heat capacity measurements show that Na3.6Pb6.4V4F28 undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at 19.7 K, whereas K3.8Pb2.2V4F20 develops short

Knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and consequences of geogenic fluoride exposure on oral and dental health in Nakuru, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Although efforts to improve household water security have significantly advanced progress toward Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, environmental hazards, such as geogenic fluoride contamination, continue to threaten the lives of billions of people who rely on unimproved water sources. While awareness of the harmful effects of high fluoride levels in drinking water exists, research on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to fluoride and fluorosis remains limited, particularly among households in areas with naturally elevated fluoride levels. METHODS: We therefore examine

Environmentally relevant doses of fluoride exposure mediate kidney injury by affecting Tregs/Teffs homeostasis.

Although global implementation of water improvement and fluoride reduction measures has led to an overall decline in environmental fluoride exposure, the risk of damage to non-skeletal tissues, including the kidneys, may persist even at concentrations below the WHO drinking water safety guideline of 1.5 mg/L. Mounting evidence indicates that excessive activation of the immune system and inflammatory infiltration are important contributors to kidney injury, among which the balance between Tregs and Teffs is critical for maintaining renal function homeostasis. However, it remains unclear whether

Antibacterial efficacy of nano-silver, nano-chitosan and silver diamine fluoride against Streptococcus mutans.

Dental caries in primary teeth remains a major pediatric health concern driven by Streptococcus mutans, necessitating effective antimicrobial strategies. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the antibacterial efficacy of nano silver, nano-chitosan and silver diamine fluoride against S. mutans isolated from carious primary teeth. Hence, an in vitro design using agar well diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration assays was conducted on samples from 30 extracted primary molars. Nano silver demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity followed by sil
